JJ Abrams Tom Cruise Mission: Impossible 3

Update: The Hollywood trades have confirmed that a fourth Mission Impossible film is being co-produced by JJ Abrams and Tom Cruise at Paramount (which if you know the Abrams history, is a mission: impossible in itself). Paramount is hoping to have the film ready for theaters for 2011 (most likely May, considering the first three films were released during that month). No word on if this will be a reboot or sequel, and no writer has been officially hired for the project. Our original story from June 10th follows.

We’ve heard rumblings for a while now that a fourth Mission: Impossible film is in development. Last we heard. Tom Cruise claimed on a Japanese television show that he was “working on the story right now” and has been “thinking about how to stage a big action sequence in downtown Tokyo.” I just assumed that Cruise was talking out of his behind. And there have even been rumors that the fourth film could be a complete reboot. Well now JJ Abrams confirms to TV Guide that he will be reteaming with Tom Cruise to produce Mission: Impossible 4.

According to Abrams, “Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing.” So it appears there is an actual story idea after all. Has a screenwriter been hired? Not yet. Abrams says that he’s “incredibly honored” that Tom invited him back, and he has not yet committed to return as director.

With the monster hit called Star Trek now unleashed, I wouldn’t expect Abrams to return behind the camera for another chapter of the action spy franchise. He’s probably looking at bigger and better opportunities. I was actually a big fan of Abrams’ M:I-III, and think the drama of the Alias-like flash forward opening is one of the best action film openings of recent years.

• Even though I enjoyed Mission Impossible 3, are people crying out for another one?
• yes. me.

<o>
• 3 wasn't bad at all, much better than the horrible 2nd film. Have a good story and it should be fine. a better story than they did with Star Trek.
• Maybe Xenu will direct.
• all hail..lord Xenu.
• LEAVE TOM CRUISE ALONE! YOU BASTARDS!
• scott
HAHAHAHAHA, I get it! because he believes something you don't!! HAHAHA!

you sure showed him.
• Sounds good to me, M:I 3 was my favorite in the series, just please God, no more " one of the good guys is really the big bad bullshit", it has gotten a little old.
• Montgomery Davies
M:I 3 was great
• Rumours of a complete reboot? I thought every M:I film was practically a reboot, they are at least in style and character circumstances.
M:I 3 was clearly the best one yet.
• Damn the haters! LONG LIVE JOHN WOO!
• adE
yeah just as long as he never gets near a mission impossible set again!

............or anything with nic cage or ben affleck
• Donald Duck
MI:3 is a much better action film than any of the Bourne movies combined.
• farmersfriend
While I appreciate that you personally enjoyed MI:3 I think few would agree with your assertion that it is better than the Bourne trilogy. And with good reason.
• Tobytwo
Wow, yeah, MI:3 was an exciting movie but it can't touch the Bourne Trilogy — especially not the Ultimatum.
• C'on
MI3 kicked major ass. It stands up to repeat viewings. I dont care what they call it or what franchise banner they put it under, I'll be seeing whatever they make next.
• Jamie
I think this franchise needs to move on from Tom Cruise.
• Yes, please.
• RPK
Oh Gawd, MI3 was horse manure of T4 epic proportions. Why would you want to go back to making that shit after finally making a decent movie with Star Trek?
• The
Yah for real... What's with all the "we loved MI3" posts. It was moderately okay and I'd much rather watch the first two where he didn't have to worry about what the government thought and he could just go around kicking ass (with real explosions in the background.. i miss them).
• I liked 3, wouldn't mind seeing a 4th!
• LordToastButter
Liked 3 and I'll see a forth....but you CANNOT compare it to Bourne. Bourne is the magyver of spies and and kick anyone with anything
• Would rather see a Cloverfield Sequel....
• Solid
I want a top gun 2 instead, Goose Returns!
• bobby s
movie wasn't bad
no need for a reboot though, none of the 3 resembled each other anyway, if you make 4 with a completely different tone who would even notice?
• I´m in! M:I III was brilliant! Most underrated movie of recent years. Pretty amazing, way better than Star Trek (Trek is just fine).
But... I think a 4th Mission means "CAREER IN DANGER" as no one movie ever before in Tom CV.
• Seth
I think JJ needs to star in the next one as a movie director who is secretly a kick ass secret agent. Naturally, Steven Spielberg is his covert contact for mission assignments. And Tom Cruise plays himself as JJ's needy and cowardly friend.

JJ, call me. Let's do luch.
• Lawdog
Sounds an awful lot like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Just substitute George Clooney for Spielberg and Drew Barrymore for Cruise.
• gah
i think JJ Abrams is wasting his time here.
• I love MI:3 it was the best one and while I don't know if it is better then the Bourne movies I know I have watched MI:3 more times and it is just a really fun watchable movie.
• Mission Impossible 3 was hands down one of the worst movies ever made. Please stop! The horse is down, please stop kicking it. To all you MI 3 lover please tell me one redeeming quality about this film. Just one, cause i know i can not.
• qwest1mark
Maybe MI:4 will include time travel
• Weyland_Yutani
Love all three of the Mission Impossible films. Great entertainment in all of them. I like Abrams producing and, even though I'd welcome another installment by him., I hope they keep the tradition of making it a director's series of films. Letterier? Bekmambetov? Limon? Get Luc Besson behind the camera again (that would be great).
• HerzogZwei
JJ Abrams should be nabbed for 2012 blockbuster Marvel's Avengers
• jason B
never even thought of him, but so far i'd put him at the top of the list. good idea.
• LOL...
• btz73
@ qwest1mark: hope it will + a 2nd timeline when we didn't watch the first 3 movies!
• M.I
Fantastic news. The M I films do their job perfectly, just fun action movies.
• yes. me.
• M;3 was not bad, but imho the weakest part of the series. Please bring back David Fincher an his idea.....
• Happy_Evil_Dude
I hope Abrams doesn't return as director, I like that each film had different man at the helm who brought his own style to the picture. Get David Fincher, Joe Carnahan, Louis Letterier, Ridley or Tony Scott, Tsui Hark, Pierre Morel, Johnnie To, Peter Berg, heck why not get Steven Spielberg since him and Tom are friends?
• theAguilar
Doesn't look like we'll be seeing that for a long while with Star Trek 2 and MI:4 up next :(

The 3 mission films have boring IMF sting operations that are only a surprise to dumb teenagers. Mission 1 premise doesn't ring true. There is no way CIA would implicate Ethan as the mole and assassin of his IMF team without recovering all the dead bodies first. Unless Jim Phelps and Claire's body was on a morgue slab CIA would not implicate Ethan. De Palma was given a dog of a script and made it more interesting then it should have been. Mission 2 has a slick veener but is an empty hollow experience. In mission 3 J J Abrams is reworking the weak formula of mission 1. Fishburne is the Kitteridge role. Crudup is the Jim Phelps role. Hoffman is the Redgrave role and we get Ethan on the run from the agency. This film has louder bombastic action set-pieces that are tired and tedious. I'm sick of badly drawn villians from within IMF. There's a plethora of villians on the world stage and we get badly drawn villians from within IMF.Bring back De Palma for mission 4. No one assenbles shots and moves the camera better then De Palma. Mission 4 need a truly sophisticated and mindbending IMF sting operation that doesn't pander to undemanding teenagers.

@ peter

i know how i define the role of 'producer', from what i've learned in school and what i've seen on various set - never anything remotely close to the magnitude of a hollywood film. but i'm wondering what type of producer you envision jj being on this film. help with the story? hand-picking the dp and/or other crew members? raising cash? casting decisions? all of the above? etc?

the 'producer' credit is such a broad title, and sometimes i feel it is widely misunderstood & misused - as there are MANY different types of producers in the pre/pro/post production life of a film. a huge pet peeve of mine, is when a producer will receive and take credit for a films' success, when in reality they didn't do shit. i know that's not the case with jj, but i guess i'm just curious if you know, or if you have any idea what kind of producer role jj's stepping into.
• Lost, Fringe, Star Trek... all of them deal with time-travel one way or another!!!! It's Mission Impossible's turn now... "Grace Scott"
• topheavy
Just so long has Cruise talks some crazy talk like in Tropic Thunder and those one-off Scientology videos we are good.
• Lawdog
Wow. I never new the M:I movies were so polarizing. I thought they were good except for that 1 scene where a helicopter chased a bullet train into a train tunnel, but better than Bourne? No. I'm definitely down for M:I 4. I like most of Abrams' stuff, and Cruise really is a great actor when he isn't playing a caricature of himself.
• MI:3 was pretty good, Maggie Q made me like that film...

If mission 4 should go ahead J J and Cruise should take the franchise into the realm of science fiction. J J has worked with time-travelling in ALIAS, LOST and his new STAR TREK movie. I was hoping J J would have brought his complex mythology into Mission 3. Instead he was reworking the weak formula of mission 1. In mission 4 I would have the IMF team travelling to alternate timelines. In one timeline the IMF team find that Communism has enslaved the world. In a another timeline Osama Bin Laden rules the world under Islam. The IMF team is bouncing back and forth between these two timelines trying to bring freedom, democracy and human rights. The Communist and Islamic timelines are preparing to invade the IMF natural timeline, and bring tyranny to infinite alternate timelines. Once IMF has stopped the threat they teleport back to their home timeline to discover that an alien mind-controlling race have taken over the Earth. Make that synopsis into a mission film and then you'll have a whole new audience into the franchise instead of the three boring mission films we've had. The way Christopher Nolan reinvented BATMAN ,and the way James Bond was reinvented in CASINO ROYALE and QUANTUM OF SOLACE, MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE should be reinvented for discerning adults who want to watch quality genre films such as BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, CASINO ROYALE and THE FUGITIVE. Those films respected adults intelligence and everything else is box-office history. I've always felt that the mission franchise can be easily mixed with the science fiction genre in a similar manner to Tom Cruises MINORITY REPORT.
