Classic James Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld was supposedly killed in For Your Eyes Only. Or, at least, we last saw him plunging to what would be a demise for most people. But this is Bond, so nothing is writ in stone (as evidenced by the fact that Blofeld later appeared in the non-canonical Never Say Never Again). Now, The Guardian says that actor Michael Sheen is in talks to appear in the next Bond film as Blofeld. No great surprise that Sheen might appear in the film, as Peter Morgan was just hired to co-write. Sheen and Morgan have worked together several times in the past: in Frost/Nixon, The Queen and The Damned United. If he’s going to appear in this Bond film, why not use the chance to bring back Blofeld, one of the most classic screen villains?

Ernst Stavro Blofeld is the head of SPECTRE, the organization against which Bond frequently found himself aligned. He first appeared in the novel Thunderball, then in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and You Only Live Twice. On screen, there was a time when you wouldn’t actually see his face; only his hand stroking a white cat would be shown. (Yeah, Blofeld is the target of Mike Myer’s Dr. Evil parody in the Austin Powers films.) Once he was fully revealed, several actors have incarnated Blofeld, notably Donald Pleasence, Charles Gray, Max von Sydow and my favorite: Telly Savalas. (I’m the guy who likes the film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.)

If Blofeld returns, does that mean we’ll find that Quantum, the underground organization seen in the two Daniel Craig Bond films, will be revealed to be a subset or new aspect of SPECTRE? And would we see the established bald, scarred version of the character, or some different interpretation? Regardless, Sheen would be an excellent fit for the next Bond villain regardless of role, and I’m not concerned enough with the rules of Bond canon to be anything other than excited for the return of Blofeld.

EDIT: It’s actually The Daily Express that originated this story, not The Guardian, so the lowdown is that it is likely bullshit. Very few truthful casting rumors ever come out of the British tabloid papers, so mark this one as fantasy until further notice.

    I agree,
Michael Sheen would be great in the new Bond franchise...
wether or not he's playing Dr. Evil, er, Blofeld or not...
though if he did play Blofeld, I'd prefer a pre-balding/scarred version...
Sheen might look a little weird bald...

Sheen as any Bond villain would be awesome.
  • Seeing as how the Bond franchise has been struggling to keep itself relevant in the post-cold war world, I don't think resurrecting a classic villain from that era is the best option to run with.

That being said, I really enjoyed Sheen's performance in Frost/Nixon.

Sheen as Blofeld would be awesome.

But I thought the Bond producers lost the rights to use 'SPECTRE' and 'Blofeld' back around the mid-70s. That's why they never use his name in that pre-credit sequence for "For Your Eyes Only." Hopefully they've gotten the rights back or will very soon.
  • SteveP
It wouldn't be resurrection of an old villain and it doesn't matter how he died in the previous films.
Did you not realize Casino Royale was a reboot? They can bring back any villain they like.

It was only a matter of time before Blofeld showed up again.

Incidentally, you know they cut the last few minutes off Quantum of Solace? Wonder if that was the rumoured appearance of Al Pacino as the head of Quantum.
  • That's Dr. Evil!!
  • Daniel
My friend omar_swarez is right. They lost the rights. However, I believe the rights were included in the purchase of Never Say Never Again back in the early 2000's. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And regarding Sheen as Blofeld I can only say this:
    Sheen - Yes! Perfect!
Blofeld - Hahaha, No. Never. Don't even joke about it. It worked in the 60's, a gazillion things have changed since. I'm even suspicious of the idea to bring back Moneypenny and Q. They've played their part in this already.
  • Blofeld could work, do NOT make him campy! Make him evil, pure evil mastermind.
Was wondering about the rights too!
  • OHMSS is definitely one of the best Bond's.
  • I think that the bond series should keep moving forward to make different villians and not going backward to bring back old ones.
  • Remember Casino Royale was James Bond's very first misson. Maybe this movie is Blofled's origins.
  • I think Quantum can almost certainly be regarded as the 'new' SPECTRE, as they both fill essentially the same role.

Quantum is just a cooler sounding work for the 21st century.

Yes, for Martin Sheen, too. That MF'r just disappears into his roles. Make him a colder, less pussy oriented Blofeld and let him rip. Bombing MI6 and Langley in revenge for QoS? Check. Bankrolling Taliban warlords? Check.
  • Haha, it'd be funny t see *Martin* Sheen in a Bond movie.
  • Weyland_Yutani
yeah, the whole terrorism thing is a perfect recipe for an amazing Bond film - think Die Hard 3 on a global scale. I would love that type of Bond film. Global. Destructive. Angry. and eventually, one way or another, a bit personal. This Bond is ready to take the next step.
  • Emurion
I think he should stop smiling.
  • Mike
I also like OHMSS, and I support bringing Blofeld back, especially as the head of QUANTUM.
  • Seth
Bring back Blofeld. But don't call him that. And have him look totally normal.

    Then it will work.
  • I feel that if they brought back the original style, two many people would associate him with Dr. Evil and wouldn't take him seriously. So his style will have to change, methinks.
  • Psst, everyone knows he's gonna play Tony Blair.

i am a huge bond fan , i own every movie and many other small collecters items such as books. i agree that the bond films are loosing there " classic " style. they have done every book including casino royal which is a prequel. i belive ( though it hurts me to say this) they should end the bond films before they ruin them

As other above noted, Cubby Broccoli lost the rights to use 'SPECTRE' and 'E.S. Blofeld' in their MGM franchise as part of the lawsuit with Kevin McGlory, because those 'characters' rights are tied to the book "Thunderball", to which McGlory had actually obtained the rights from Fleming, but then assigned over the film to Broccoli. McGlory's rights included the right to remake his script, which is why NSNE is simply a remake of Thunderball. MGM later acquired the film from McGlory, but wasn't successful in its effort to also buy back the SPECTRE/Blofeld rights.

If Broccoli's company had indeed acquired back these character rights, they'd be crowing about it - and it would be publicized. (At the very least it would be easy to confirm.)
  • John Guard
if they do bring him back...............

    IT'S ABOUT FUCKING TIME!!!!!!!!
  • I was hoping thats what quantum was - spectre. I think it would be cool to see Bond vs Bloefeld and bond giving him the scar or somehow making him bald.
  • Pussy galore
They need to make up for the upset that was Quantum of Solace and I agree with Nish. Bond should give him the scar in a fight and the baldness should come from some sort of accident.

    whoa - accidental double-post. Sorry.

"Blofeld later appeared in the non-canonical Never Say Never Again"

Actually, Never Say Never Again was just a remake of Thunderball.
  • I always felt that Quantum was the SPECTRE of the new films. So that would be interesting.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Sure, bring him back, but never have him appear on screen. I lik emy super villains as elusive puppetmasters.
  • 790
    Lame casting choice.

all these articles are retarted, they say "blofeld was killed in FYEO," yeah he probably was that was then, Casino Royale restarted the bond series. If Blofeld is in bond 23 it will show his origins and him coming to power.

Hair loss or Alopecia is a problem most of us are facing on a daily basis. Some studies say that men tend to "get" balder faster or that stress contributes to this problem or plainly we're just born with it - carried by genes that is. Nevertheless when it comes to hairloss or caderea parului we have to agree that women suffer the most and spend up a fortune to get rid of this problem. The thing is most products aren't even half good as they are marketed so what's a woman to do ? I think that natural remedies (using eggs and aloe vera) can help your hairloss problem but if people don't start eating and living healthy there's no stop to this issue.
