Joe Quesada Talks Thor and Iron Man 2

Marvel

In the latest edition of Joe Quesada’s web column Cup ‘O Joe, the Marvel Editor-in-Chief talks about Thor and Iron Man 2. Here are some highlights:

Quesada talks about Thor director Kenneth Branagh’s three-hour Thor Story Pitch:

We had one big creative meeting with the Marvel Creative Committee, which now works on all of our movies and I have the honor to be a part of. We sat with Kenneth and discussed the “Thor” movie and the overarching story of what that’s going to be, just to give our input before anything was put down to paper by screenwriters. And it was one of the highlights of my time here at Marvel because not only did Branagh sit there and give you the story beat for beat, he and [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige formed a great team. It was performance art. Kevin would give us the establishment of the shot and the situation: “Here we are. We’re in (take your pick of location). And here’s Odin and he’s coming up to (pick a character).” And then Kenneth would come in and give you the color commentary. “Odin has an air of majesty to him” and he’d act out the Odin part or the Thor part. So we sat there and literally got a three-hour one-man show from Kenneth Branagh. It was fantastic. People pay a lot of money for that kind of performance by one of the world’s greatest living actors.” … “He’s very Shakespearean in his delivery. He’d sit there and give us the emotions between the characters as they are in scenes – what the character’s motivation is in that particular moment and how it relates to the overarching story of the movie. He’s definitely about character, which is the quintessential trait you have to have to understand the Marvel characters. It’s not just big hammers and capes and things like that. It’s about what makes the character tick. There’s definitely a reason for Thor, a reason for him being and a very deep family relationship and story in the movie that I think is going to be very cool. Oh yeah, and there’s reasons and motivations for him to hit people with his hammer… hard!

Joe also talks about a conversation he had with Jon Favreau a couple years ago at a party during Comic Con, which involved Tony Stark’s motivations and what that means for Iron Man 2:

He wanted to know who he is and why Tony Stark does what he does. That was really key to Favreau: why put on the suit and try to do good things? It was a much tougher question once he defeats the Iron Monger, gets his tech and his company back…why continue doing this? What does Tony Stark stand for? In essence, the thing I never revealed about that conversation in the past is that Jon was looking for these answers because he was already thinking ahead, he was thinking about Iron Man 2.See, it doesn’t quite work on film that he goes and stops a little lady from getting mugged. While that may be an ancillary part of it, when you have that suit of armor, the world’s greatest weapon, the story has to be bigger, and your reason for being has to be bigger. But at the same time, it has to be small and streamlined enough that an audience can grab hold of it. Favreau is all about that. And at the same time, where do Tony’s allegiances lie? It was almost the same kind of questions we had during Civil War. So time with Favreau is sort of spent quietly huddling and talking about a character’s reason for doing what he does. Again, that’s also a part of that Marvel formula.

  • I kinda feel bad for Joe Quesada when people make fun of him for One More Day/ Brand New Day. But then i look at the price of some of Marvels comics (3.99 for 22 pages of story) Then i don't feel so bad.
  • Themovies!!
Yea there are times i dont like what joe has done with the comics, and the prices have been getting real high some times. Heck i remember when i started officially collecting comics 8 yrs back it was like 2.00 or 2.25 not its 3 or 4 dollars.

    Please youngin...

I remember when comics were 75 cents with million dollar stories and art.

The art in old comics isn't nearly as good as modern comic art in my opinion.
  • evilnik
the old ones had a particular charm towards it. nowadays everya rt looks digitally colored. its good, but loses its feel. becomes really fake and gets lost in the other comics....
  • It looks digitally colored because it is!

Not every comic is colored that way. And lets be honest, the amount of talent in comics today out does what's been done during the 50's 60's and 70's. Not to say there weren't amazing comic artists back then. But today, the sheer volume of talent and variation in styles of art and writing is astounding.

I don't collect superhero spandex stuff anymore. But I can say that today's comic is a lot better in terms of story-telling, reproduction, art, and presentation.
  • "with million dollar stories and art."

    lol, right.
  • MattyPlant
Me thinks he is referring to one specific edition of Action Comics, with the iconic last son of Krypton, moving a vehicle lol.

Really looking forward to Thor, bit unsure about the lead role, but you never know. So long as Loki, is a snidey, maniac im happy.
Tom Hiddleston reminds me of Gene Wilder ala Charlie and The Choco factory.

I'm anticipating Thor more and more with each snippet of news. I'm still not over the fact that Branagh is at the helm. I can't imagine a better director to handle the character.
  • Isn't this old news? I'm sure I read something like this a few months ago. I know I read something about the meeting they had with Kenneth Branagh. I guess it's good to hear it again but next time please have some new news.
  • Just reading this brings excitement. Iron Man 2 is going to be a blast and Thor seems to be shaping up quite nicely and has the potential to be another well received Marvel adaptation made under the Marvel Studio aligned with Paramount (a great partnership).

  • I'm as stoked as the next person about Brannagh directing, and that "one man show" they described must have been the most incredible sight you could have ever witnessed.

Although...part of me fears this could be similar to what happened with The Hulk and Ang Lee. Highly acclaimed director takes on an iconic comic book character and completely drops the ball with audiences and most fans.
  • I'm really looking forward to Thor, Ironman 2, Cap, Avengers... But after what Ryan Reynolds had to say about the Deadpool film, I think I might be looking forward to that one the most. If it is what he says it's going to be, it might just be the best Marvel film yet.
