Robert Rodriguez To Start Machete In Five Weeks

machete3

Robert Rodriguez just does whatever the hell he wants to do, it seems, and what he wants to do now is Machete. (Or, more properly, that’s what he has money for right now.) That’s the feature film version of the trailer that ran as part of Grindhouse, featuring Danny Trejo as a bad-ass Mexi-can who takes revenge on greedy business types. Despite recent rumors about the film actually going forward I would have bet that Nervewrackers is next, but at CineVegas last week Danny Trejo told Gordon & the Whale that the film starts production in five weeks. (As noticed by the ever-vigilant Playlist.) More details after the jump.

So not only is Machete happening, it is happening SOON, which jibes with reports we’d heard but weren’t ready to believe. In mid-March Rodriguez said it was “ready to go,” and he evidently meant it. Variety had previously reported that the film could be set to go as early as June of this year, and while it might actually be July, that’s pretty damn close. That report also said he’d be co-directing the film with editor Ethan Maniquis. Rodriguez wrote the script a while ago, and with financing available from the aptly-titled Overnight Productions it’s time to make it happen. Though I’ve soured on the Rodriguez style of late (OK, yeah, Planet Terror is a tasty Carpenter homage, but still) I’m hoping this will be something that invigorates him: a fast, cheap, dirty little movie about knives and violence, with a lot of off-the-cuff flesh and action.

In addition, Trejo says he is not in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, just in case you were still hanging on to that casting rumor. Now I’m really mad at myself for not having the cojones to go up and talk to Trejo when I saw him hanging out alone outside the Jay-Z/Eminem party/show that Activision threw at E3 two weeks ago.

The Machete trailer from Grindhouse (NSFW):

  • this is going to rule!

anyone know if its going to be straight to dvd or in the theaters?
  • So i guess rodriguez just gave up on Sin City 2 then. Jesus christ this guy is schizophrenic.
  • Who Ha
I don't think it's a bad thing and I can relate. It's fun to tell people all the cool ideas you have in your head and people want to see those ideas come to fruition. They will eventually, but when one sticks out more than the others at any given moment, you just go after it. Not many people have that creative freedom to do whatever the hell they want, WHENever the hell they want, and he's worked his ass off to attain that. Well wishes to the guy and the process.
  • EmetrezZ
you obviously have not been following none of this, including the Weinsteins decision... have you?
  • firmanfam
what the fuck is a "mexi-can"?!
  • What? Are you trying to imply that Danny Trejo/ Machete is a Mexican't?
  • mexi-can
    if you're asking that question,
    chances are you aren't a mexi-can
  • Danny Trejo is without a doubt the ugliest man acting. There's no way this film could gross more than Sin City 2. But whatever, I laughed my ass off at the trailer during Grindhouse but a whole film where Danny Trejo's cratered face is dominating the big screen is a bit much to stomach..
  • You are an idiot.
  • emetrezz
why dont you post a pic of your face so we can compare yours and Trejo's?
  • Hugo
So excited for this. They F'd with the wrong mexican. Haha.
  • Am I the first one to realize that this is technically a prequel to Desperado? Wasn't Danny Trejo a knife-throwing badass mexican in that film? Anybody wanna bet we will see Antonio Banderas appear somewhere in this film?
  • Dorkbot
Danny Trejo has been always had knives associated with him in the Robert Rodriguez Films. Plus Danny was in the Prequel to Desperado Already (It's called El Mariachi). Even in Spy Kids his character is named Machete.
  • booboopoopoo
He was nowhere in El Mariachi. Desperado was his first outing with RR. He was in a Steven Seagal flick, Marked for Death.
  • scott
Machette could also be Danny's character from Once apon a time
  • Micaelo
For the record, it's cojones. A cajón (cajones, pl.) is a box or a drawer. Although, it's possible you really did mean to say you didn't have the boxes to go up to Trejo. I don't know.
  • notevenifihadtwenty
I wouldn't go up to him if I didn't have the boxes either.
The boxes for the numerous casualties to be put in after Trejo kills them with throwing knives, that is.
  • Wow- thanks so much for the mention! You guys have been a huge inspiration to us!
  • I'm in, man. I like Planet Terror more every time I see it, especially the "extended version" (though the Grindhouse version is crazy fun as well). This is exactly what RR does well -- fast and fun and gritty. I enjoyed the trailer in Grindhouse and I'm curious to see how much RR tries to match the actual film up with it. I'm guessing not TOO much, but who knows? Just hope Machete still hooks up with the mother-daughter combo and we get some kickass Jeff Fahey action.
  • Anyone else get really excited when they saw the 5 weeks in the title of the article? I really want this to happen because Rodriguez has been talking about this for years now and not doing anything about it. He hasn't been buys, he's just been toying with alot of ideas that he decided he didn't really want to do.
  • anticipating
Yeah I did, just because it's almost surreal. The same thing happened with Inglourious Basterds. Maybe I'm just getting older.
  • Egger Buckland
I have no interest in seeing the entire Sin City series filmed. One was good enough.
  • thomas040
Wonder what the rating for this movie is gonna be? and for the love god... make all those scene make the cut... I wanna see all that stuff in it's context... it's gonna be FREAKING awesome!!!!
  • I want to be stoked, but I will believe it when I see it.
  • so.... its like zorro?
  • Yay, I can't believe their finally going to shoot this flick!
  • Yay, I can't believe they're finally going to shoot this flick!
  • Stryker
Awesome. I'm a perfect world, since this and Thanksgiving are getting made on the quick and cheap, maybe the could make a second Grindhouse. Of course this would never happen but doesn't mean you can't dream.
  • stoked for this.......Grindhouse was huge at alamo drafthouse
  • booboopoopoo
He'll go back and do Sin City 2...just not this year. Give the guy a break...he thinks about 5 projects ahead, films 'em in like six weeks, and moves on to what he really wants to work on.

I think Sin City took all of what five months to film? He'll do it if he knows what's good for him.
  • Andrew
Can someone tell Rodriguez to stop making shitty kids movies? Do I need a crowbar to explain this to him?
  • freemachine
I'll believe it when I see it. Rodriquez has and even bigger mouth on him than Tarantino when it comes to promising all sorts of films they're gonna make.
  • this is like christmas to me.
danny trejo is possibly the most awesome person in existence.
  • i'd have to agree. He was my favorite character on Desperate Housewives... and no I'm not kidding.
  • Dave
Maybe the writers of XXX should sure ;)
