WB’s Live-Action Akira Remake Is Dead?

akira_remake_dead

The live-action adaptation of the classic anime Akira is dead, according to a report from Bloody Disgusting. The film has been in the hands of Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way for some time, and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) has been working to crack the script. The plan, reportedly, was to craft two films in order to preserve the scope of the massive manga by Katsuhiro Otomo (who co-wrote and directed the anime, as well) with Ruairi Robinson directing. But Robinson is now said to be off the project, which is also ‘dead as a doornail’.

Quite a few changes would have been made to the material; notably, the live-action film would have been set in ‘New Manhattan’, rather than the Neo-Tokyo of the original manga and anime. No cast was ever publicly revealed to be attached. The involvement of Appian Way led many to suspect that DiCaprio would star as the teen biker Kaneda, despite being demonstrably too old for the part, but the actor publicly denied any involvement beyond producing duties. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was rumored to be in mind for Tetsuo, the friend of Kaneda whose psychic powers are awakened, setting of a cataclysmic chain of destructive events in Neo-Tokyo. He also denied any attachment.

Frankly, it’s difficult to see why Warner Brothers would move forward with the film(s) after Watchmen failed to become a breakout hit. Akira is similar in that it is highly conceptual with a complex character structure, a great deal of plot and backstory to communicate and, if done in properly detailed fashion, would be wildly expensive. Doing the film on anything less than a grand scale would be to miss the point. With an intricately detailed anime already in existence (and one which struggles to tell the story, even with the scope reduced from that of the manga, which had not completed publication when the film was made) why make a new feature that was forced to scale down?

In the wake of the WGA strike that ended in February ‘08, plans were once announced to fast-track the first film for release this summer. That obviously didn’t happen, in part because the script didn’t come together in time. Yet I’d held out an almost perverse hope that Appian Way could bring the project to fruition. I’m no great fan of the anime (despite its great visual splendor) but would have liked to see something as epic as a two-film Akira adaptation hit screens, in part because of how financially and artistically risky it would be.

  • Of all the remakes/reboots/reimaginings/rehashes that land on our screens, this is the one that doesn't quite make it??
  • Willl Smithh
    Agreed.
  • oh well....might be for the best........now lets see the fate of ghost in the shell
  • wha?! theyre making movie of Ghost in a Shell?!
  • icko
    there was....it's called the matrix
  • DKKKKQA
    Yeah, nah.

The GITS movie rights were picked by Dreamworks a couple of years back IIRC
  • mixmasterangel
    thank you god
  • I think if they got the right director behind it, the movie has potential to be amazing. I guess it's better that they shelve it for now than push something out there that's not any good.

I was just wondering about the status of this project. I was hoping some comment section would grant one the opportunity to inquire into Akira's status. Shit! This sucks!
For the haters, Robinson would be wonderful; that's the reason why I was excited for this live-action Akira film.
So, WB, you have contact with Robinson and you have another franchise...
Here's an idea, give Ruairi the chance to direct the next Terminator film if he'd like. Take a look at The Silent City and tell me he wouldn't be a top choice to take over a Terminator sequel. McG had his chance; let someone with a vision like Ruairi's have a crack at The Terminator.
  • Thank God. I didn't want to see a Leonardo DiCaprio/American cast.
  • Gaz's script will not have died in vain!!
  • Damn, if Akira was shot like Bladerunner, I think it could do well. I think Watchmen tanked because after Dark Knight people are a little burned on the comic book film adaptation, or maybe just me. As far as Appian Way, I hope they at least move forward with Ninja Scroll...
  • Weyland_Yutani
Watchmen tanked because it was bad. No need to analyze it beyond that.
  • Reason
Thank God this is canned. I do not want the mighty Kaneda being played by Zac fucking Efron.

    Let it be Manga.
  • good. as soon as you move the setting away from Neo Tokyo, you're setting yourself up for problems. Akira is too important to do halfway.
  • I was interested in this adaptation because 1.) I thought the new take seemed interesting 2.) DiCaprio's involvement would have attracted the top-notch talent this movie needed and 3.) stretching the story over two movies would have helped capture more of the manga's epic-ness BUT that being said, I can live without this remake.

I've always felt like the Akira anime was one of the most cinema-looking animated movies ever, so how much could a live-action version really bring to the table?

I also 100% agree with any dissenting views on a live-action version of Ghost in the Shell because that's such a visually amazing movie that a switch to live-action would either not be able to live up to the anime's aesthetic or copy it, in which case it'd seem pretty redundant.
  • Part of the problem is that the story is extremely, extremely dense. Now you COULD thin the story somewhat by dropping some of the more out-there elements, but then you're not making Akira anymore.

Given the economic situation right now, you're not likely to get a project like this greenlit.
  • transformers secret
I have been told the girl who plays shai's college friend is an actual transformer sent to spy on him.
  • nelson
JGL would of been great in this tho
  • darksmile
I don't know what to think about this.

But let's keep some hope for any manga adaptation, since James Cameron next movie is "BATTLE ANGEL" known as "GUNMM" which is probably going to be EPIC.

Is there any news about Ninja scroll live adaptation ?
  • GregoryV
Need I say again... WHERE THE HELL IS MY EVANGELION MOVIE??
  • The
You're still holding out for this??? Last time I checked, they (ADV) "had" the money for it (and then they went broke so I guess they don't have money???).
  • Weyland_Yutani
I would like to see top-notch adaptations for both Akira and GitS. I love the Manga and anime of both of these and would love to see how it might be adapted. Could be terrible or it could be something pretty remarkable. I guess we'll have to wait and find out.

..and yeah, Battle Angel. Cameron had that in pre-pro for quite a while before getting sidetracked. I hope he does it.
  • Completely agree.
  • The
Yah, screw Avatar. Let's get some Battle Angel on already!
  • im disappointed. I think this movie could be matrix 1 style of awesome when it come to cyber punk.
  • Well I guess the bad anime adaptations are taking their toll on future LA adaptations.

Kind of cool knowing that Zack Snyder was approached. It might sit in development hell for a while but hopefully WB will choose to make the film whenever they feel they have all the resources to begin production.

It comforts me knowing that at least the studio is taking the project serious enough that they are willing to have it lay dormant for a while instead of rushing and end up with a piece of crap product (DB:E style).

This was on my list of most anticipated films in the early stages of production. A shame to find out that its dead for the time being.
  • What makes you think Snyder is a good candidate for any type of movie.
  • I just said it was kind of cool not that he would be the best suited. I was fine with Robinson...
  • K that's fine. I just want to see Snyder do something original and see if he can make watchable movies without beloved source material.
  • DiCaprio does have some good movies but Akira can not be made into a good live action movie, IMO. Some anime should never be made in a live action movie and Akira is on top of that list. Look at Dragonball, which is an awesome series but the movie was horrible.

And please, no one touch Ghost in the Shell or am I too late with that remark...
  • topheavy
*single tear* I will miss you... I really wanted to have the pleasure. Maybe James Cameron?
  • Cooper680
Thank goodness. Just buy the original film on Blu-ray or DVD and see it done right the first time.
Cultural history and background has everything to do with its importance. Now transplant that to New York and watch it be another film where it gets blown up.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I'm not getting the cultural importance of these properties. The seem like pretty universal sci-fi stories. Sure, a motorcycle chase would look great flying through the futuristic neons of Shinjuku and there is something to be said for the incredible music found in both Akira and Ghost in the Shell, however, I'd bet that anyone tapping into the live action is going to (hopefully) be heavily inspired by those things. There are opportunities here for an inspired filmmaker.

As someone that has seen more midnight showings of Akira than I can remember, I'm ready for something new to wonder about. It might get a lot of people interested in the originals, which can only be a good thing for the future of similar entertainment.

I wonder what Otomo and Shirow think.

And since i'm still thinking about it, I would anticipate seeing Kaneda's bike (there are custom bikes out there) in action with the same interest as the Batmobile. Get a group of similar bikes together for the live action sequence? Can't even imagine how cool that would be.
  • Happy happy joy joy!!! HOLLYWOOD LEAVE AKIRA THE FUCK ALONE!!!
  • I hate to say it... But I think the Wachowski's might be able to do a good version of Akira... After seeing what they did with Speed Racer, I think they have the cornerstones in place to make a good Akira. That being said, it would probably suck... But it could be awesome too, so hey...

THANK YOU!!! THERE IS A GOD!
