Hangover

Put aside, for a moment, the notion that a comedy like The Hangover really doesn’t need a sequel. The movie has performed spectacularly well, and will likely earn $200m this summer, wo sequel plans that Warner Brothers laid months ago are very likely going to come to fruition. Which means that director Todd Phillips and stars Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper are already fielding questions about it. What they suggest we can expect from The Hangover 2 is after the jump.

The first bit of ‘we’re making a sequel!’ boilerplate comes from Phillips, by way of MTV. “I’d love to do [a sequel], because I love working with these guys more than anything; this is the most fun I’ve had on the set of a movie,” director Todd Phillips explained. “I have some good ideas floating around of where to take it.” More specifically: “all the usual suspects would be back.” Yeah, we figured.

Galifianakis was a little more honest and forthcoming to Hollywood.com. (Maybe. This is Galifianakis, after all, and I wouldn’t trust anything he says to not be in character in some way.) “I think it’s going to be in a foreign country, and I think it has to be in an exotic place,” he said.

Take all that with a grain of salt, though, based on a statement from Todd Phillips that EW ran today. “I don’t want to put it out there. We’ll get attacked.”

Back to the question of whether a sequel is a good idea. The first was made for about $31m, which has allowed it to be wildly successful. How much more expensive will the follow-up be? Specifically, what price will the three leads command? And when they’re intentionally setting down to do it, can Phillips and co-writer Scot Armstrong capture lightning in a bottle again? Given the winding development of the original, I’m pessimistic; I’d rather see Phillips move on and do something more organic. But that’s not the way the business works, is it?

Editor’s Note: Phillips now tells MTV that they could start shooting the sequel as soon as spring, 2010 and he also confirmed that all of the films central characters will return.

It shouldn't be about another day where the guys don't remember their night. I think it has to be different if it's going to be good.
  • I'll believe it when I see it. Wasn't Wedding Crashers getting the same treatment after it hit?

  • 2010: The Year that Hollywood went to the Moon.

Great idea. Somebody give this man a job.
  • Just mash it up with the supposed Old School sequel. I have limited interested in seeing sequels to either... but a single sequel to BOTH films? I'm there.
  • That's a good idea. I remember when Seth Rogen was talking about combining a Superbad and Pineapple Express sequel into one movie and I always though American Pie 5 crossed with Nightmare on Elm Street would be funny.

I'll try to say this without spoiling the movie,
but don't the last couple scenes in the movie kill all chance of a sequel?
I guess maybe one of the other characters could get married or remarried (or maybe divorced),
or they could do some other major life event...
A different location would be a good idea too...
If this sequel gets made, though I don't think it needs to be made,
could be done well if the right story and ideas are there...
I say go for it Phillips!

Well, actually, there was a nice little foreboding message there at the end of the movie when Justin Bartha said "I'll never put you through anything like that again." to his bride to be. Perhaps I am just reading into this too much, but I'm praying for a sequel because "The Hangover" blew me away. They'd have to do it right, though, or else they'll face a lot of backlash for ruining such a great first movie.
  • Well I think a return trip to Vegas was kind of set up with Ed Helms telling his ex stripper wife that he wanted to come back and go on some real dates. I could see that happening as well as Zach Galafianakis and Bradley Cooper getting into some shenanigans while trying to clean up in blackjack, which they said they should come back and do. But even with all that I'd still rather see them go to a new location..

Yeah I agree. There were definitly grumblings of a Old School sequel and that never happened either. Cant we just go bcak to the time when a good idea wasnt sucked dry by lesser sequels (when was that?).
  • smarter than you
there is an old school sequel in the works. Old school dos. learn your movies pal
  • This doesn't excite me at all. It seems that they'll end up doing a sequel where they'll all say in unison, "oh, not again..."
  • I don't think it needs a sequel. I like the director and wouldn't mind see another movie from him perhaps involving the three main characters, but not one that has them doing the exact same bit.
  • Have them end up in Tijuana or something.

The Hangover : Escape From Guantamo Bay
  • The Hangover: Escape From Butcher Bay. Vin Diesel needs another hit.
  • He got a hit and a sequel with Fast and Furious and I am sure XXX 3 wil be a hit. I know you weren't being serious but I am ju st saying the joke doesn't work. Wow I sound like a dick. Sorry ha ha but you ruined his joke so I am ruining yours

they kinda already did that with harold and kumar

Sigh. That's the jo- You know, I'm not going to bother. I'm going to shove my head in an oven, instead.
  • I really thought they were going to cut to black at the end and not show the pictures, but they probably didn't know if a sequel would have happened. In hindsight, they should have cut to black at the end before they showed the pictures and then started out the sequel with a montage of the pictures. Still a really funny movie though. Galifianakis rules.

Everyone is getting all mad that they're gonna "do the same bit again"- but nobody involved has said that. All we know is Phillips and the three awesome stars are returning. Did they say it'l be another forgotten night? No. I have faith in Todd Phillips, because he's definitely aware of what made this so good. Don't worry, folks. At least they greenlit a sequel BEFORE the movie made boatloads, which means they have faith in the premise entirely.
  • What about like a chronicle of what happened in between when they take the Jagermeister shots and when they wake up? If that's the best idea I can come up with, then this seems like a bad idea.
  • Wait about 1.5 years and it will be considered a reboot...
  • Heather Graham will be back, hopefully
  • seriously
the hangover didn't live up to the hype for me.
i chuckled several times, but i didn't think it was hilarious.
  • The_Kid
A mix of old school and the hangover could be called An Old School Hangover, the guys from old school meet up with some of their new pledges which just happens to be the guys from the hangover, they wake up after the last two of pledge week go crazy and they lose Beanie

I wanna see Justin Bartha thrown into the mix. He didn't have much of a personality in his few scenes, and it might risk messing with the formula too much, but he's just about the only thing I really liked about the National Treasure movies, and he single-handedly made that Teachers NBC sitcom he starred in a few years ago enjoyable.
  • I got a better idea. Let's combine the Cliffhanger sequel (or reboot, I really don't know) with Hangover! Hanging Over A Cliff! Gold!
  • thats gold jerry! gold!
  • Andyrooskie
Mash it up with the last Harry Potter movie. Deathly Hangover? I dunno.
  • I heard that they are shooting for a summer 2011 release for The Hangover 2: Hangover-er. I enjoyed the movie, but I think it would not be as good if it's rushed into production.

If they do make a sequel, the first sign that it will suck, is if lots of A-list stars get cameo's in it.
