Buffy the vampire slayer

A couple weeks ago it was announced that Buffy movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui was developing a new Buffy The Vampire Slayer film without the involvement of Buffy creator Joss Whedon. The movie would be darker, and would follow a new vampire slayer who must step up to protect this new generation. The Whedon fan community were shocked. Making a new Buffy film without Whedon’s involvement seemed rather pointless.

The good news: Apparently the new Buffy producers did reach out to Whedon after all. Whedon tells EW: “I believe [the producers] did ultimately reach out to my agent after the news broke.”

The bad news: Whedon wants no involvement. Whedon says, “I think that’s something better left untouched by me. So, I wish them luck.”

It seems to me that the only reason a new Buffy movie is in development is financial reasons. Twilight mania is bigger than ever, and anything with Vampires and teenagers is bound to make money, right? It’s this kind of stupid Hollywood thinking that has resulted in the biggest bombs and worst movies of all time. It seems that you should only make a movie if you have a good story to tell, but Kuzui announced a big screen Buffy reboot before a screenwriter is even hired. Even if they did eventually score a hot actress like Megan Fox for the role, a Whedon-less Buffy film effectively has alienated the core-fanbase.

  • I'm not a huge Buffy fan but I really did enjoy the original movie and the episodes, on the series, I was able to catch. Maybe Whedon is making a right call given that Hollywood loves following trends. I guess we'll see when the reboot is released.

    Me personally...I want more Firefly!

I would love to see the screenwriter or even director who would do this project knowing how much he/she would be hated by the fan base and possibly shunned by the industry since Whedon has many many supporters.

Great, know you got Uwe Boll's attemtion.
  • I love Buffy and Angel, and I honestly can't see this ending well. Perhaps if they hired one of the regular writers from the shows that might work, but no Whedon involvement for me is a downer. Let Buffy lie where it is already with season eight comics.
  • No chance
There's no way any of the Buffy/Angel writers would agree to work on this without Whedon's involvement.
  • time to move on.

Wasn't Buffy the series basically a reboot of the movie? It's completely pointless to make another version. But that's Hollywood for you.

    No Whedon = Nothing good.
  • Whedon already did a "darker" Buffy story-line..she was called Faith(Eliza Dushku)..I wouldn't want to have the write/direct something I already did either. Maybe somone should remind them that "Dark Buffy" has been done already, or that should just make "Faith the Vampire Slayer: The Movie Of A Character/Idea From a Re-Boot Gets Re-Booted."

As much as I would love another round of Whedon-Buffy, I think Joss is making the right call. He's been there, done that. I agree with MrMcGuintry, I resent the statement that this new Buffy will be darker. I hold to the belief that Whedon's Buffy was very dark. It had characters like Faith, Angelus, Warren, Dark Willow, etc. Also, season six is pretty much one big dark assortment of depression and hopelessness. If by darker they mean without the quick wit and snappy dialogue famously associated with Buffy and all Whedon creations I think they will find that what they have left will just be the shell of a great story, great characters, not to mention a multitude of angry fans. Whedon should focus on making Dollhouse epic.

If this gets made, it seems that it will most likely fail. Alienating such a rabid core fanbase like this eliminates a lot of the profit that could be made in the theaters. I'm glad Whedon is putting distance between himself and this project.
  • Considering what happened in the Buffy series finale, if Joss had been onboard, it could theoretically take place in the REAL Buffyverse wtihout Buffy and still been interesting. As it is, fans won't even have that to look forward to.

    Bring on Twi-Lite. -_-;

"I believe [the producers] did ultimately reach out to my agent after the news broke.”

Holy parsed sentences. How many equivocatory words in that sentence?

I believe [the producers] did ultimately reach out to my agent after the news broke.

None of these writers could tell the truth if their lives depended on it. Jeeze, dude, just say they didn't fucking ask you and blew you off.

    NERD RAGE

not everyone was a fan of the series!... But the concept sounds great for popcorn.

I think a Buffy movie without the original cast from the T.V. show is ridiculous, and I will not see it. Buffy was a classic show with a loyal fan base, so I doubt that I would be the only one.

Buffy without Sarah Michelle Gellar, the film won't be the same with out her or any of the other original cast, i won't be running to cinema to see it. i would rather watch the re-runs of the old series instead of watching the new film. Big Fan.

The original movie was good, but misunderstood. The show was epic. All of that is due to Whedon's genius, the amazing writing staff, and the cast. A remake will ruin it. Without Whedon and his characters, you lose so much value and charm. You don't have the connection of the characters, the Buffy-speak, the storyline...you won't have the fans. It's a dumb idea to say the least...and a slap in the face to Whedon and his fans.

I am a huge Joss Whedon Fan. I've never seen anything he was involved in that I didn't love. That being said, I was a Buffy fan before I knew who Joss Whedon was, and I think that if they are not able to be true to the series, they should leave it alone. Most people either didn't see the movie to start with, or just watched it as an afterthought because they enjoyed the series. I think another film would make alot of fans very unhappy, but there would undoubtedly be a new fanbase out there for such drivel.

Much as I hate the truth of it... the reason the BTVS series ended was because the fan base was aging. In media terms they need a completely new reboot every so often to get the most out of their advert positioning. Art for art sake is great, but TV comes down to profit... sponsors and such. If the money was still there, so would Buffy be.

MOst Twilight fans probably don't know of or remember BTVS. And that's who this "producer" is looking to cash in on... cynical yes... stupid ... ? prolly not.
