John Carter of Mars

After many years in development, it appears that John Carter of Mars is gearing up to begin production. As you know by now, Finding Nemo and WALL-E director Andrew Stanton will be making his live action feature debut with an adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1917 sci-fi fantasy novel A Princess of Mars. KLS is reporting that Disney has signed a deal to shoot part of the film in Utah. After the jump I also have exclusive info that Tom Cruise was circling the project for a short period of time.

The screenplay was written by Andrew Stanton and Mark Andrews with some revisions from Michael Chabon (Spider-Man 2). Stanton began interviewing prospective actors in January, and I even heard rumblings from two good sources that Tom Cruise was seriously considering the project at one point (although I’ve been unable to confirm these rumors apart from knowing he had meetings at Pixar about being part of a potential trilogy of films). Tom Cruise’s representative was unwilling to comment on the matter. Whatever it was that Cruise was brewing over at Pixar’s Emeryville campus, the actor decided it was best to move on to something else — James Mangold’s Wichita.

Back to the shoot, Utah approved up to $5.5 million in tax credits, as Disney expects to spend $28 million in Utah when production begins in November. Stanton has previously stated that he wants to avoud the look and feel of Star Wars or any of its derivatives, and was seeking a “more naturalistic aesthetic.” Utah definitely fits the bill.

Governor’s Office of Economic Development Director Jason Perry says that the production will employ over 400 people full-time for seven-straight months, and that Disney believes the film could become its next big movie series, akin to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Thanks to Matt B and Dan H for the tip.

This is all great, but Tom Cruise?
By circling the project do you guys mean like producing?
Cause I do not see Cruise in the starring role of this film...
    Maybe thats just me though...
Wasn't John Carter a big brawny long haired Conan the barbarian in the future type?
Looking forward to the movie... but less so if Cruise is in it.
    ...
  • How much involvement does this film actually HAVE with Pixar? I mean, Stanton is directing, but what else is there?
  • From what I understand, preproduction is being done at Pixar (storyboarding, animatics, story development) but Pixar is not doing the FX
  • That's good! This is now an anticipated movie for me. Thanks for the info.

Do you know if this would technically be a Pixar produced film?
  • I heard it won't have the Pixar name attached since the script will be PG-13, and Pixar is an all ages company.
  • hmmm
Captain james t kirk has also been circling this film...
  • wheeler
Good thing. They won't even have to use CGI to make Utah feel like Mars; it'll stand in as a completed set. Take that, Utah!
  • deathmetalhero
oh we'll take it 'wheeler', if that is your real name.... WE'LL TAKE IT AND LIKE IT. As I have become (just appointed myself I should say) /film's MB Utah Ambassador and all around counesuour of good taste and bad spelling, I do think that some of the redrock desert landscape will look amazing as a martian backdrop and bring some much needed $ this way. Maybe we can use that money to finally get running water in this state, or maybe I won't have to drive my horse-drawn buggy to Nevada to use the internet. Imagine that....... Utah's own internet access, that would be amazing. And Wheeler, I too instantly thought about the utah/mars connection as well as the martian/mormon connection. I came into the comments to get a laugh, and I am dissapointed that no one is being a dick about that. Wheeler, I thumbs up'ed you bro because no one else can take a joke apparently.
  • wheeler
Yo! Be careful on your trips to Nevada the evil "red-skinned devils" don't sabotage your caravan.
And by now, if you've spent over a week reading any of /film's message boards, the kids on here don't *get* jokes; everything I write is literal and meant to be totally offensive.
Thanks for taking the reigns - you probably have a lot of experience with them considering you only have horses and not cars - and making the comparison between martians and Mormons. Take that, Mormons!
  • Utah has played scfi-fi before in Galaxy Quest (remember the crazy rock planet?). So, although your comment seems as though it was meant to be insulting, you are in fact correct.

Can someone tell Andrew Stanton to make Nathan Fillion a star?
  • elessar
That's actually a pretty good idea. I think Nathan Fillion would be a great John Carter, as would Billy Crudup. Plus, Stanton himself has said he's looking for a lesser-known actor for the lead.
  • I'm not sure how "exclusive" that info is. A) It's been common knowledge about this project for years; B) It's even included on the film's Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carter_of_Mars_... McTiernan was going to direct.
  • True, it was common knowledge that Cruise was involved in a PREVIOUS version of the film... but it was not known that he was circling the current version of the project. My sources say that he had meetings at Pixar, was involved in the project for a short time, but decided to go with Wichita instead.
  • I'm really excited for this movie, purely based on the fact that Stanton is directing. Every time I hear the guy talk about his movies (or movies in general) I can hear the excitement and passion in his voice that a lot of directors are 'too cool' (for lack of a better phrase) to have these days.

I haven't read the books, but plan on diving into them before this is released.
  • Can't wait!
  • Edgar
    It's Edgar Rice Burroughs.
  • An interesting tidbit I've picked up from friends in the pixar family:
Many pixar staff that are involved in the film are having to leave the company and become employees of Disney. The reason being that pixar is a non union shop and this being a live action show it will fall under union employment. It's been a bit distracting around pixar. An unfortunate biproduct of the Disney acquisition.

After Wall-E, I will watch whatever this man touches.
  • fds
    It's actually ksl. Not kls.
  • Quite a number of yarrons ago, I'd heard of attempts to bring the series to life on various "ET" kind of shows and I remember hearing Cruise's name as well as Julia Roberts' brought up for a "Princess Of Mars" version.

Frankly, I'd like to see a Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie pairing for this franchise. They have the right chiseling that Burroughs' novels and Frank Frazetta's art immediately conjure up. With DaFoe, they'd bring a cheesily fascinating old SF fantasy series right out of the pages. But between the two of them, they'd never afford it.
