Rumor: Stephen Sommers Fired From G.I. Joe?

sommers_gijoe_cast

A number of sites today are pushing forward the story that G.I. Joe director Stephen Sommers has been locked out of the film’s editing room, based on a post from film producer Don Murphy’s message board (now removed), as noticed by Latino Review. The story is picking up steam, in part thanks to vaguely corroborative posts by people like Jeff Wells. And while I can’t verify the story, I have heard several really bad things about the film from a few informed sources. Common word is that it is a disaster for Paramount, and that a lot of unplanned post-production work was done to amp up the action and excitement factors and possibly just to make the thing watchable. Details of the original post from Murphy’s message board after the jump.

The condensed version goes like this: A disastrous test screening led production exec Brad Weston to push for Sommers’ firing. Stuart Baird was brought in to rework the edit, while producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was also let go from the project. (di Bonaventura getting the boot seems unlikely.) There’s a lot of talk in the post about how di Bonaventura and Sommers didn’t know anything about ‘the mythology’ and how that led (somehow) to the ruin of the film. The ‘didn’t know the mythology’ argument seems like a fanboy straw man as the issue doesn’t seem to be that the movie is bad by GI Joe standards, but by any standard. Jeff Wells quotes an unnamed source that says Sommers “was given total freedom but he melted down and has made the biggest bomb in many a moon.” Again, not a bad GI Joe movie, but a bad movie, period.

If Paramount had a solid action movie on their hands that wasn’t going to please the franchise’s core base, the studio could still do fine marketing it to the mass audience that doesn’t really care, as long as things are blowing up and Sienna Miller is wearing leather. Meanwhile, I have zero concern over the film one way or the other. Despite a basket full of bad efforts, I’m still willing to hope, no matter how unlikely it seems, that the Stephen Sommers of Deep Rising will show himself once again. And there’s always Joseph Gordon-Levitt to anticipate as Cobra Commander, dumb mask and all.

Update: Refutation or damage control? Latino Review spoke to Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who had this to say:

…it’s completely untrue he was never asked to leave or been fired or any of that. That’s ridiculous. The movie tested very well…We had three test screenings, three different times and tested it and each time it just got better and better. We started off in a good place and we ended up in even in a better place, which is what you hope on a film from testing it.

And on what happened in the editing room:

Nothing that doesn’t happen on every other movie, which is that you constantly work and work and work and you make it better and better. We had a delay on visual effects so we waited a long time to finish the movie but that’s the only thing. I don’t really know why that would be interpreting it negatively but I guess it was.

Seriously just shut it down... start over... please!! Seriously... Sommers is jsut a pinch better than Uwe Boll... and they both ahve stupid accents.

    EPIC FAIL...
  • Johan
True dat. Never have heard Sommers but GI Joe looks totally fucking stupid. When a movie looks and sounds really terrible in every trailer, then the finished thing can´t possibly be any good.

Max Payne as horrible as it was, did at least look visually cool in some parts. And Sommers own Van Helsing had at least some cool shots in the trailer. But GI Joe? None!
  • Daniel
I totally agree with the idea of starting over. It's probably the only thing that could save it from a horrible death, which is inevitable.
  • Doesn't Boll find loopholes to finance his movies? So Sommers could be more of a drain financially to Hollywood and its producers. Wow.
  • Considering this man's career thus far:

1.The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)screenplay(uncredited)
2.Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride (2004) (writer)
    3.Van Helsing (2004) (written by)
4.The Scorpion King (2002) (character) (uncredited) (screenplay) (story)
5.The Mummy Returns (2001) (written by)
6.The Mummy (1999) (screen story) (screenplay)
    7.Deep Rising (1998) (written by)

Locking him out of the editing room is too good for him. Not only should he not be given any more jobs, he should be shot out of a cannon into the sun to pay for the crimes against humanity.

"The biggest bomb in many a moon."? Yeah, that's not hyperbole. Sounds more like an exaggeration of someone who never made it in the biz.
  • Even people who 'never made it in the biz' can call a bomb when they see it.
  • By that standard Uwe Boll has 'made it in the biz' too, and he still makes some of the worst films of all time. Just because you 'make it' doesn't mean you don't make crap.
  • shadow
yup, never sitting threw this crap in a theater.
  • Erik U
I doubt they really expected this movie to be all that great to begin with, and the first weeks box office following a ton of promotion is what they are gearing for.
  • Cipri
Well, that´s the man who did The Mummy Returns and that shit called Van Helsing... Enough said...
  • so essentially, 40 year old bald fat man realises he wasted his life collecting toys, and takes it out by starting a rumour about eho he wants to be most in the world.

and for those slow people out there, I mean 'director of the movie' not steven sommers, even though he is the director, so yes, idiots who complain only do so because they want to be sommers..
  • Man, I must be reaaallly slow!
  • fed
you really think this movie looks good? super suits? super human stuff. The guy from 30 rock as cobra comander...this movie will suck dick
  • vva
"in which the film got the lowest test score ever from an audience in the history of Paramount.." Come on.. this is the same studio that produced Popeye and The Phantom.
  • Johan
Yeah but that was some time ago. They have also produced Star Trek since then and Transformers. As much as I disliked Transformers Bay it was still much more fun than Van Helsing and Sommers other movies.
  • vva
I'm talking about the supposed "insider" who wrote that it got the lowest test score EVER in the HISTORY of Paramount. That's a big tip off that this whoever wrote it is lying and exaggerating everything. I mean.. in the HISTORY of Paramount.. THIS got the lowest score?? Suuure... he's obviously got the entire score list for Paramount movies?
  • Yeah but that producer is probably lying through his teeth, only negative reactions have been heard from those screenings... really BAD reactions.
  • The Phantom was great.
  • Agreed.
  • I'm revoking your critic privileges. Got sit in the corner. And put on the pointy hat.
  • I'm revoking your critic privileges. Go sit in the corner. And put on the pointy hat.
  • Only reason I would watch this movie is because of Joseph Gordon Levitt.
  • Lawdog
Color me not the least bit surprised. But the trailer looks so awesome! lol j/k j/k

They might be better off eating the loss and forgetting they ever made this thing instead of wasting any more money re-editing and distributing it. That, or edit it down to about 30 minutes of Sienna running around shooting stuff in tight leather ala Kate Beckinsale or Rhona Mitra.

When I heard a GI Joe movie was announced I was delighted then when I heard Sommers was involved all those good feelings disappeared. The mythology is bursting with great material and characters which could be so relevant in todays world (in the right hands). Did Paramount really need a test screening to indicate the movie was a turd - I could have told them that after watching the trailer last March. Burn in hell Sommers!! Imagine what JJ Abhrams, Peter Berg or Joe Carnahan could bring to GI Joe.
  • DRF
Yer really aiming low with the replacements there, ain't ya?
  • Jim
The moment they put all the Joe's is powersuits and removed their associated identities they FAILED. Seems only Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow kept their original uniforms.

The trailer, with the lame powersuits, only served to pissed me off.

  • Edward
So we're all in agreement then that the only people excited for this are those who want to see just how terrible it is?
  • Jay
    CGI Joe
  • Ron
    Diddo, Malick.
  • Oh wow that is awful news. That could ruin his career.
  • Ben
Wait. Paramount gives STEPHEN SOMMERS complete control on the G.I. Joe the movie, but Fox can't give Gavin Hood an ounce of control on Wolverine?
  • Sounds like no one knows what's going on really...and the trailer I saw didn't look THAT bad really. Does it follow the "mythos" GI Joe perfectly? Probably not, but neither did the recent Star Trek really.
  • steve
powersuits? this is almost a flashy powerrangers without the big robots..."perfectly" this is an entire rip off of a great comic/cartoon. Nothing is right except snake eyes and storm shadow's looks. have you actually seen g.i. joe before? whats next? some of them can fly...and we can work awful marvel cross overs into it..why don't they throw in a spiderman dance sequence...it would fit nicely with the "mythos"...they are only counting on dummy's and fans. snake eyes and storm shadow aren't enough to get people to pay for this crap.
  • bomberman
I call bullshit on di Bonaventura. he's a producer. their job is damage control from minute one of a film
  • This was such an easy idea NOT to fuck up, too. They could have easily came up with a believable way to have them all in their original costumes or some variation and I can't believe they never did a trailer where they flashed title cards of the character's names to get everyone excited. Fuck this movie. Reboot!
  • DRF
Yeah. What was Bryan Singer thinking when he changed the costumes the X-Men wore in the comics. He definitely made a terrible decision. Can't anyone learn a thing in this business?
  • Palmer
No amount of editing will salvage the crap fest that this movie will be.
  • jEFF w.
The guy made Van Helsing and the awful Mummy movies, there's no way that GI JOE will be remotely watchable.
  • INS
They should of let Stallone do this movie
  • bomberman
it would have at least been all american
  • omar_swarez
"And there’s always Joseph Gordon-Levitt to anticipate as Cobra Commander, dumb mask and all."

You should see him in that new Killshot movie with Mickey Rourke. He's absolutely terrible.
  • G.I. Joe will be no better than transformers revenge of the fallen. How so many can attack stephen sommers but defend michael bay amazes me.
  • Jeremy
I enjoy Popeye. I bought it for 5 bucks at Target.
  • Gorb
What to expect from Transformers 2

A 2 hour and 23 min movie....shot and filmed just like commercial/music video with:
plot holes, horrible comedy, terrible dialogue,Linkin Park, Shita Ledouche, crappy acting, butt ugly Transformers designs, cheesy ass director, Bay's trademark racist stereotypes, wasted lifeless, soulless, incoherent, action scenes, shaky cam, ADHD editing, blatant over the top product placement, cliches,

lens flares over dramatic slow-mo scenes, slow-mo 360 hero shot, helicopters in sunset, overacting encouraged by the director, god awful stereotypes and racism, Peeing and farting Transformers, Transformers given little to no screen time or characterization expect for lame racist stereotype personalities, 2 hours of Shia running around screaming NoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNoNo.
  • I honestly can't fucking wait.
  • dagreenman18
Please be true. Why did anyone give him the job in the first place? Did they SEE any of his movies?
  • omar_swarez
Yeah they did, and they saw that they made money
  • I think that movie is very good .
