Marcus Nispel To Direct Conan

nispel_conan

Update: Variety has confirmed the story.

My former CHUD colleague Devin Faraci is reporting that Millennium / Nu Image have finalized the search for a Conan director, and the choice is Marcus Nispel, who headed up the re-dos of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th . Devin relies on an unnamed “impeccable source” but he isn’t one to run everything that drops into the inbox. You can treat this as rumor if you’d like until confirmation appears, but Devin’s faith in the source and the story are a good indicator that it is on the money. Is Nispel the right guy for the film?

Devin had previously reported that Nispel was in the running against Christoph Gans and Neil Marshall, the latter of whom seems like the best fit, but the least likely to tackle the job. The project from Nispel’s past that could most directly point the way to Conan, however, is the nearly unwatchable Pathfinder. The Karl Urban Viking movie had its moments, but overall didn’t add up to much. Let the arguments commence as to whether Nispel is a more reliable choice to head up the Cimmerian’s new tales than the formerly attached Brett Ratner.

Here’s what we know about the project so far: Outlander scribes Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain were hired to rework the original draft by Dean Donnelly an Joshua Oppenheimer. We don’t know much about the actual story, besides the fact that it’s been said to be dark, ‘badass’ and faithful to the original novels. Production has been slated to start in Bulgaria in late August of this year. CHUD’s source also claims that the idea is to cast an unknown as Conan, about which there’s not much to say. Filling the shoes of Schwarzenegger is going to be a difficult task, and that’s probably the best way to do it.

What do you think? Can Nispel be the right guy to take Conan into new territory?

Conan will make enough money to get at least 15 sequels and then be rebooted 3 years later.

Peewee Herman could direct and it wouldn't matter.
  • I betcha that's what people said about the X-Men series. Then we got X3. Then we had to go pierce our taints to make the pain seem lessened.
  • Nispel has a decent eye for this kind of stuff, and the biggest problem with Outlander was really the script.
  • DRF
So what we're getting here is Pathfinder 2, yes?
  • Egger Buckland
I can't wait to see how Conan will inadvertently kill all his friends with a quickly jimmied up death-trap.
  • So he fucked up 2 remakes and gets to ruin another one? Awesome!
  • tyler
bad choice, IMO. pathfinder was awful, awful stuff. if the director of Outlander, Howard McCain, was chosen, that would be much better news. but looking at Nispel's filmography, he hasn't done anything that good.

    sad day for conan fans.
  • Nispel can compose a shot, but his movies are all style, no substance. Gans would have been my pick.

Conan is just too complex a character for film. it would be impossible for him to make the leap from the video game world. he may do alright if he ever appeared in a book or comic, but i still think he belongs where he started. in a video game.
  • I so hope you're joking.
  • Please say if you're kidding.
  • Ender's Shadow
Please GOD -- educate yourself before you make such asinine statements, or at least have the gumption to place a /sarcasm tag. I don't know whether to cry for you or for the future of mankind. Even a quick Google search would have educated you to Conan's history, which dates as far back as 1932 pulp adventures by E. Robert Howard.
  • Kortoso
But based on a video game from the 1920's.

    ;)
  • Mediocre director, Great Beard.
  • Uh, Sean P.- I'm assuming you're joking, right?
  • OH HELL NO!!! I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS!!!
  • I would have liked Neil Marshal to direct but Nispel should do fine
  • sean p
the video game is great. i just don't want to see him in some lame book or movie. i say keep conan in video games.
  • superozy
uh if you didnt know, Conan was originally a novel
  • Mike
By and far one of the stupidest things I've ever read.
  • sean p
this director lives behind the Rite-Aid on Hollwood and Vermont.
  • hahaha
  • Dr_Mecha
I think this man needs to make a movie about his beard, and all the adventures he's had with it on the high seas.

    What happened to James McTiegue?

Nispel has a terrific eye for reboots. I loved Texas Chainsaw and Friday the 13th, despite their obvious flaws, as terrific popcorn horror flicks that paid homage to terrific franchises of the past. Hopefully he can do the same with Conan. Conan the Barbarian is one of my favorite films and Howard's original pulp stories are excellent. There's a wealth of plot and character to draw from those books and I trust Nispel to do the character service. It's also relieving to have this in the hands of a director that isn't afraid of R-rated cinema. My biggest worry about Ratner being attached to the project (aside from the obvious fact that he's a hack) was that it would be a toned down PG-13 adventure tale - the opposite of what Conan should be.
  • Kevin
AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!! This is fucking hilarious, all the people across the internet bitching and moaning about Ratner originally attached to direct and now we have someone ten times worse!! This guy is the equivalent to Uwe Boll....well, maybe just a tad better, but not much.
Fucking pathetic! 20th Century Fox is now officially the worst production company in the world. It is not possible for them to learn from there mistakes!
I bet a lot of people are going to wish they never said anything about Ratner directing....which is actually quite sad if you think about it.
  • Kevin
Has anyone seen Pathfinder? Fucking hell it is horrible!
  • Pathfinder was the worst movie I've ever seen in a theater, and I'm not exaggerating. This is shitty, shitty news for fans of Robert E. Howard.

At least I hear the Solomon Kane film kicks major ass. I can't wait to see it!
  • Not a good idea but I think Marcus Nispel can do that and mybe he's the only one who can make it good. But now, who's the new Conan?
  • musicsoup
i think this conan will be a little more barbarian and a little less destroyer. that could be a good thing. as much as i love destroyer, it totally feels like it was shot on universal's backlot. while barbarian actually feels like it may have been shot a thousand years ago. kind of the like the difference between raiders and temple.

as it's own film, texas chainsaw is a pretty bloody messed up movie. of course it could never live up to the original, but it really wasn't that bad. i won't defend friday the 13th more than saying that the first 10 minutes are really f'n brutal. if there's one thing this guy is good at, in my opinion, it's sheer brutality. good bloody r-rated cinema.

i think pathfinder sucked cause who gave a shit about that character? who had ever heard of that story? there's plenty of history with the conan character. i think this will probably be pretty damn cool. we'll just wait and see... in two years.
  • Terrible news imo. At least Ratner's version would have lived on in infamy as superlative garbage. And I'll always wonder what hard-R Conan films from Robert Rodriguez, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, and Rob Zombie would have looked like. Bummer.
  • Feef
Its a sad day for Conan fans. the writers of outlander and the director of pathfinder - oh boy.
  • It's all about the script, people, it's all about the script.

I've heard good things so far, but with the studios you never know how much they are going to change.

Nispel is a competent director. He can handle scenes, actors and special effects. He's perfectly "capable" of directing a good Conan movie... If the script is good.

Why are we all bitching about this director when it's those two asshats they've got reworking the script that we should be worried about/
  • The_Kid
He's a better choice for Ratner, that's for sure, but I've seen Pathfinder and it's really unwatchable the movie is just plain bad, Hopefully we'll actually be able to see what the hell is going on with this movie when we watch it. I'm a little worried but I hope for the best.
  • Mola Rambo
CROM!! What horrible news. The Conan mythos is so fantastic, why can they not find a better director? Too bad Guillermo del Toro is too busy with the fifteen million projects he has going. His version of Conan is one I would want to see.
  • Lemmy23
Wow! What an unbelievably wrongheaded decision! This guy was unable to get the feel right for his horror remakes, disappointing myself and tons of other lifelong horror fans. Beyond looking like music videos they were both total failures.

Robert E. Howard's original work should be treated as the cornerstone of modern fantasy literature and pop culture that it is, and thus Conan should be given the respect he is due as a character. This was done for Tolkien's Lord of The Rings which went on to be one of the biggest franchises in movie history.

The Conan universe is thoroughly and completely EPIC and should get the same treatment LOTR’s did. That means a great director with a great script and great actors! I think Nipsel’s involvement puts the nail in the coffin the some one as perfect as Javier Bardim would take a part in the movie. God forbid they would get a good actor to play the lead… that didn’t work for Iron Man, Batman or Spiderman.

A Conan film done right could stand against Batman Begins or the LOTR trilogy as a great film AND a money maker. This would produce a film that is more than just a big opening weekend built by a hype engine. It would produce a film that would have long legs at the theater, well beyond into home video and become a summer tent pole when sequels are produced.

Dear folks in charge: RETHINK YOUR DECISION!
  • The Friday the 13th remake was putrid.
  • ralf
Marcus is a great choice and Drasko Andjic unknown actor from Serbia is the only man on earth ho can play new Conan!
  • Kortoso
They've been searching for people who are style over substance - music video and TV commercial directors. This is so that the producers can sit on the director in regard to content. It's a control issue.
  • Kortoso
Ridley Scott must be beyond their budget, or imagination.
  • celine
omg, conan has nude scenes.... this is the opportunity to see jared padalecki completely nude!

btw, ive seen all conan movies, and I liked Texas Chainsaw and Friday the 13th!
