iron man 2 connection

How are the first two official photos from Iron Man 2 possibly connected? Details after the jump.

Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Iron Man 2 high res

Paramount recently released the first photo of Mickey Rourke in costume as Whiplash. When the photo was released, I speculated that the photo was possibly Rourke’s first appearance in the suit, as the contraption looked like it was cobbled together with spare parts (very much like Stark’s Mark 1 armor). We know this… the scene takes place at the Monaco Gran Prix race track. Our friends at MovieViral noticed something fishy on Stark’s monitor. You see those squiggly lines across the top?

Iron Man 2

They look very similar to the map of the Monaco Gran Prix:

Also notice Stark’s other monitor… is that a breakdown of Rourke’s tech?

rourkes heart

Stark is looking rather annoyed at his super futuristic translucent screen. Could it be that this is the moment he first learns of Whiplash? I think so.

Thanks to /Film reader Corey A for the tip.

  • I take it you got my tweet?
  • You guys cracked the case!
  • that is great slashfilm and whoever found this
  • Indeed.
  • sweet. i never noticed those things. good catch.
  • MoreDag
Yeah, that Whiplash suit looks like his version of Stark's Mark I suit.
And I was hoping the race track wasn't Talledega or some shit. Glad to hear it's more-than-likely Formula One Mr. Rourke is terrorizing.
Good "investigative journalism" by the folks at MovieViral if indeed they're correct.
  • MoreDag
*Talladega. Hate Nascar; love F1. Apologies.
  • MoreDag
Who gave me a negative thumb? Douchebag.
  • wheeler
Well, let's keep this going. Douchebags.
  • adE

  • Montgomery Davies
    super sleuths!!!!!!!! LOCKED IN!
  • Thank goodness Matt is a NASCAR fan, because I totally didn't notice it.
  • zoom function. where would we be without you.
  • I'm just waiting for War Machine

    Whiplash is pretty cool though
  • I agree, as much as I want to see War Machine I would rather save the best for last. :P
  • Actually, I would prefer if we didn't see any War Machine till him actually in the film. It would be very cool if we had a feeling of anticapation during the whole thing.
  • invZiM
Umm... Why didn't they make it exact? Not too hard to draw those lines correctly. Don't care though! Love Iron Man!!! Yay Iron Man!!
  • mnk
"zoom function. where would we be without you."

LOL! i agree, we want war machine. "next time baby!" we'll miss terrence howard
  • Amg
    Nice!

I had immediately assumed that was Mr. Rourke's debut in a prototype suit. It looks like a prototype. I love that F1 is getting some love. Even if it means a few cars have to get sliced up, it will be worth it just to hear those babies screaming through the theater.

Question: Would they really be inserting CGI this early in the process or would that have been done with Photoshop on just that specific shot for the press pic? I guess they would want to start working on the effects as early as possible or it would be like making two movies. CGI is expensive though. I would want to get the movie shot and cut just how I wanted it before I started work on the effects. I'm pretty sure I've seen shots in trailers that I never saw in the movie though, so I guess that answers that question.

New question: How much CGI footage typically gets cut from a film, and how much would it cost on average for that unused CGI?

Trying to whip cars going by at 150 mph? A dry run for Hammer's prototype arc reactor? I'm getting some good visuals!
  • Matt @ MovieViral
And you guys can thank me later :D
  • Hey guys, I'm new here, but @ Lawdog I'd say that the mock-ups the houses do don't cost much, they're a clever bunch of buggers and can knock up an idea as quickly as a storyboard artist (sorry any SA's that are on here). Most folk have probably seen the Wolverine workprint, it doesn't stand up to scrutiny with a reasonable amount of definition. The only cost is the re-shoots if it's really crap. Hope that wasn't too much of a rant :)
  • Lawdog
I got you. Like stand-in effects. A quick and dirty mockup for reference. That makes perfect sense. Thanks.
  • ajk111
well doesnt that mean that the map on stark's screen is backwards?
  • I guess that's where the Photoshopping comes in. The studios must do it to see if folk like us pick up on it. If we talk about it enough in great enough detail, their scourers of the internet would head somewhere like here first. They do the same with new games (although they've wised up slightly that your potential triple-A title can't really be a high-end mock-up of what you SAY it'll look like at E3 for instance). If it was in motion as a part of a trailer then it'd be different, but doesn't it look like it's going to be what we want, especially with all the different generations (I reckon) of suit in the background?!
  • And as an afterthought, there's a hell of a lot of movie folk that are also gaming folk, and chances are it's a recognizable shape, however subliminally.
  • Goobity
Why does Whiplash look like He-Man?
  • lol
  • I'm such a huge F1 fan, how did I not notice the Monaco GP track on his screen... What the hell.

This is going to be awesome though.

If anyone is wondering, I'm guessing that Rourke's character is somewhere in the N-O-P area on the Monaco map. It looks like the Marina section of the track.
    Somewhere in this area... <a href="http://www.f1-site.com/wallpapers/2009/f1/monaco/..." target="_blank">http://www.f1-site.com/wallpapers/2009/f1/monaco/...

    Unbelievable detective work! Cool.
  • This is probably going to be the best snooping of the year. I can't imagine any movie having a good mystery, I mean, there just is none :D
  • Ender
+5 Internets for Peter. That was really clever!
  • Ryan
    Peter? Read the article again.

    Matt did it at Movieviral
  • Angus
So, then, was the RDJ photo flipped?
Because we would actually be seeing the *reverse* of the raceway map on Stark's transparent screen, because it faces him, and our angle is showing us the transparent screen from the rear. Dig?
  • DoctorWolfe
Maybe someone else noticed this so sorry if that is the case. But I did notice something else:

Check out Rourke's pants. My first thought was that they were standard prison garb (the Fugitive came to mind) - then I noticed the guy in the right side of the picture. He is wearing the same outfit. So it's possible Whiplash snuck into the Grand Prix as a worker/employee, and then decides to tear shit up. Maybe even a pit guy.

I felt awfully special for noticing that so I felt the need to comment. My apologies again if has already been brought up...
  • mf`
    Interesting observation.

I had also thought of been thinking of that orange garment. It's standard prison garb... but only in the US, right (or predominantly in the US)? Ivan's Russian though... and he's in Monaco in the photo. But, of course, the character could be based in the US, who knows....
  • this movie is gonna be awsome
  • mattmagoo
  • Whiplash looks like a douche.
  • Tom Sawyer
Can someone identify what piece of chunk lies on the road behind Whiplash?
  • Lawdog
I can't really tell for sure, but the more I stare at it the more it looks like it might be a driver's helmet. Whether or not it's empty, I can't say.

This is the biggest copy I've found: http://host.trivialbeing.org/up/iron-man-20090608...

Waouaw ! At first look I could have never been able to say that something bind them. Good work.
  • LuMendz
I just want to see how Black Widow is done. That's all. I don't like Scarlet as the casting choice and I just want to know how she's done.
  • Regarding people posting about the image of the track being backwards on Tony's screen. There can be 3 reasons.

    1. That photo was the very first one released to the public. Most likely they have hundreds of the same pic and one of those pics has it corrected

    2. This could be one of the humor scenes, example:

Jarvis: Image is on screen now sir.

Stark: Uhmm...Jarvis, I think you have it the wrong way

Jarvis: My apologies sir. [screen is corrected] Forgive me for a my mistake, it will never happen agasin [in a sarcastic tone]

    Stark: [just smirks]

    3. It's a mistake that they will not catch unless the Marvel dudes reads boards like this.

    Just my thoughts. ;)
  • this is going to rule!!!
  • mNm
Although If he were actually looking at the monitor, he would see a mirror image of the monaco track.. ?
  • woah... you guys are super nerds. i would have never guessed those lines are the monaco tracks.
  • speedemon
