Milos Forman Says Movie Pirates Are Communists

forman_thefiremensball

At today’s World Copyright Summit, director Milos Forman (One Flew Over The Cukoo’s Nest, Amadeus) blasted individuals who pirate movies via the web, saying they aren’t engaging in democratic or capitalistic enterprise. What they’re “really doing is promoting a communist ideology,” he said. Forman was the keynote speaker at the summit, which (as the name implies) focuses on protecting creators’ rights. Piracy was a huge topic at the event, and Forman blasted the ethos behind it. “Pirates also think everything on the Internet should be free,” he said. “But that is like going into a department store or supermarket, and just because you got a shopping basket for free, everything in the basket should be free, too.” OK, that’s boilerplate (and quite legit) anti-piracy screed. It’s the Communism comment (and the opportunity it affords to mention some of Forman’s rarely discussed older movies) that is interesting.

After his breakthrough film Loves of a Blonde, Forman made The Fireman’s Ball. It was a film born out of creative desperation — he and his screenwriters couldn’t come up with ideas and, as the story goes, actually went to a fireman’s ball in the small Czech town where they’d gone to write. They ended up making a short feature that drew on their experience, but which was also accused of having layers of political meaning. At the ball in the film, a lottery is undermined by the theft of nearly every prize; girls press-ganged into a beauty contest all bail and a fat woman crowns herself. When a fire actually breaks out, the party turns to watch the drunk firemen at work, who limply throw snow on the flames.

It’s not difficult to see criticism of the communist politics that had held the Czech nation since 1948 in the bumbling, ineffectual and even criminal events of the film. Forman denies any allegory, but few ever believed him. The film was shelved and banned. So when Forman accuses anyone of a Communist idealogy, it is a line delivered with venom and deep meaning.

Loves of a Blonde and The Fireman’s Ball are both available, and highly recommended entries in the Criterion Collection.

Well if it's communism then he should be happy we've got Obama as prez, soon we'll all be communists! What a d-bag.
  • He may have a point but is Milos really trying to suggest capitalism is doing something good for artistic integrity?
  • Yeah, I sing the fucking "Internationale" every time I pillage from demonoid. What a douchebag is right!
  • The thing that Milos and the studios don't understand is many times people have already paid for their product already, or they are not potential customers as it is since they would not pay to see it anyway.

I already 'paid' for your Amadeus Milos.
I paid for it in the theater.
I paid for it on VHS.
I paid for it on Cable TV.
I paid for it on DVD.
I paid for it on the bonus DVD.

Now you want me to pay for it on every other format they can think of?
The medium does not equal the product.
It was the same film in the theater as it is now.

    I'm done 'paying' for it.
  • “Pirates also think everything on the Internet should be free,” well that's not true sometimes pirates think "If downloading this movie legally was made cheaper, easier and done in a format in which I could quickly movie it between devices I wouldn't be doing this" but god forbid Forman worked with the studio's to solve that problem it's probably best to point fingers and name call that will solve the problem for sure!

their is a simple solution to the movie pirate problem, STOP MAKING SHITTY MOVIES!!!!

the dark night is a perfect example of this. people will go see a movie in the theaters if they feel its quality.

Why the hell is this an article? Looks like something IMDb would post.
If you want a reaction, Forman's right. Piracy sure as shit ain't capitalism. So, uh, I guess Forman's right by default: pirates are communists...?
I don't know why I took the time to write a post on this.
  • Nobody except complete morons know that Forman is right. However, piracy will always exist in some form or another and the best the studios can do, and should do, is to curb it by meeting demand as I suggest in an earlier post up there.

  • Wow! Nobody agrees with Milos? You guys are fucking retarded. Keep stealing shit. That sounds totally legit. Now comes the part where slashfilm mods delete every comment I leave. Unless they leave this one because I am acknowledging it.
  • Some people disagree with certain aspects of "movie economics" and rather than boycott there are other ways to deal with it, more or less, legality aside - perhaps this will be understood and eventually most forms of media will give in and distribute more sensibly, like Hulu. Then there's also the argument of art being something for everyone to share. But calling people fucking retarded because you disagree with them doesn't say much about yourself, either.
  • Can you ever forgive me?
  • I would, but the censorship faeries would make it *disappear* ! (I'm with you on that one...)
  • Who the fuck would agree with Milos? I see absolutely nothing wrong with pirating a movie, only because its my way of saying "Fuck You" to the industry. Its fucking rediculous to have to pay $10-15 to go see shitty movies anymore. And yes I know the arguement "well dont go see it", but what if the movie had decent reviews and I paid hard earned cash for it and it sucked ass? So I say until they come up with a reasonable price, and better ways to view new movies, I'll keep pirating, and if that makes me a fucking retard like you so boldly put it patrick, then Im a fucking retard. But if anyone is a retard, its the people that go out and waste their money seeing movies like Wolverine and T4 when all they turn out to be are a pile of shit movies.
  • Matt
"what if the movie had decent reviews and I paid hard earned cash for it and it sucked ass?"

Then the critics saw something in it that you didn't, and you got unlucky. Really, you're saying that seeing a movie you didn't like is worth saying "Fuck you" to an entire industry? Besides, the problem with your argument is that piracy would only save you money if you never go to see the movie in the first place, which would mean you're going to be pirating good movies and bad. And while you certainly might go see the movie twice in theaters, you're probably not going to do that with every one that you enjoyed, and even if you do, most pirates won't.

There's a lot of anger in your post. Maybe you're one of the people you called retarded, who went to see Wolverine and T4? Maybe they just don't feel as comfortable with stealing as you do?
  • Matt
I went to see a movie yesterday, cost 7.50. If you're paying 10 - 15, you're doing it wrong. Besides, you can walk out of the movie before it's over and get your money back. If you stayed to the end, it's your own damn fault.
  • I don't think it affects studios that much. Yes, pirating is stealing, taking away profits but how much is it really compared to how much studios actually make? Look at Wolverine, 80 something million opening weekend which I think was expected, it dropped significantly because the movie sucked. Look at Taken, the dvd was released in other countries and put online. That movie was surprisingly successful. The situation is hard to judge. People don't want to risk seeing a bad movie. Crappy movies are just crappy? Or is it because studios think they're losing a lot of money and are making all these bad choices now about their films?
  • This wall of unsubstantiated political ideologies needs to be broken down with the water fountain of truth. Likewise, Milos needs to be smothered with the pillow of feathers.
  • Matt
Joking about murdering people who disagree with you is sure to lend the pro-piracy crusaders the legitimacy they crave.
  • Milos Forman isn't relevant anymore. He's a non factor.
  • Matt
There's no way in hell you'd be saying that if he came out in favor of piracy.
  • Milos, Amadeus is one of my total top favorites of all time. Thats all. Great movie
  • We may be thieves and pirates but to call us commies is to grossly misuse the term. For us to be commies we would have to have the state take the movies from Mr. Forman and his peers and then distribute the films to us. If Forman would prefer such a system he can take it up with the president.
  • Matt
If you'd taken the time to read Russ' story in the first place, you'd see that, for one, Forman lived in an actual Communist state, as compared to you, who has only read about it in books and newspapers and seen it on TV. For another, you don't seem to have any clue as to what a metaphor is.
  • Lawdog
One problem. Pirates are on the opposite end of the spectrum. They're libertarians bordering on anarchists. It isn't about distributing software/music/movies to the people. It's about ignoring the laws. Libertarians believe the government should be limited to defense, infrastructure, and international relations, and these types of laws that are purely about money should be abolished because they are unconstitutional. Anarchists don't believe in laws. Period.
  • Dan
    Oi...

If he's such an artist money wouldn't even enter into it. It shouldn't matter HOW people are watching your films, its that you made something amazing and people love and adore it and want to see it and experience it - by whatever means possible. PAYING to see it shouldn't even be an issue, not to him. Production assholes, men in suits, money-grubbers sure... but the guy with the vision who put it to film, complaining about internet piracy? How can you be so naive? How can someone I think really "gets" it come off with such bullshit? Shut the fuck up, hack. If there were no such thing as money and profitability and box office earnings, if we didn't live in a society of numbers where your product - no matter how good it really is - isn't worth the blood, sweat and tears you spent creating it if it's not PROFITABLE, it would be about nothing else but telling a great story and sharing it with everyone around you, people just like you. Music, storytelling, it was non-profit once upon a time - just people being people, sharing creativity, passing experiences on through art. Now we've got straight to video shit coming out are assholes, The Grudge 3 and Vacancy 2 and Anacondas 4, included in cheaply whipped up boxed sets labelled "The So-and-so TRILOGY"... Star Wars was a trilogy, Back to the Future is a trilogy... The Grudge isn't a fucking trilogy, just because you made 3 fucking movies about the same thing as fast and as cheaply as you possibly could doesn't make it a trilogy - they even cheapen the idea of a TRILOGY now, degrading the great trilogies - the trilogies that with the simple uttering of the word "trilogy" come to mind instantly - by pasting the word on any fucking thing that comes in threes from Blade to Final Destination to fucking Darkman...... it's all a profit business now, nobody gives a shit about telling a story or presenting an amazing product. And we ... the fans, the viewers..... hope for filmmakers and directors that want to make a good movie and thats all - fuck the MPAA, fuck the profit margin, something that will WOW us... then we get fuckheads like this guy, who have MADE great films, they've inspired us and WOW'd us..... and they act like piracy degrades their work somehow. Fuck you, sir. From this day forth, I'll be skipping your work out of principle. I expect it from some people, but I never expect it from the artists themselves. Because it no longer makes you an artist when you're clearly worried about the profitability of it. It makes you a dick who makes great, deep, respectable films, who you would THINK is above all this money-grubbing goofiness - but really you're just like any other asshole who just wants some money in the pocket.

Anyway, I spent far too much time writing that and I'm going to go now.
  • ConcreteLogic
That's silly. If there wasn't profit in it we wouldn't have a movie industry at all. You have to take the good with the bad. That is just the way the world works, and to think differently is childish.

I honestly couldn't care less if you pirate media or not, just don't get all noble about your internet shoplifting.
  • Matt
Shut up, you self-righteous moron. While you're calling for the entire financial structure of the film industry to burn, you apparently could care less about how many below the line people would lose their jobs if everybody did what you did. People like you really only care about childish anarchic "Fuck the MPAA" bullshit, thinking you're Robin Hood because you don't spend 7.50 to get off your ass and actually see a movie.

If you cared so much about art, then you would see a film in a cinema, with a large group of people on a huge screen, not alone in often shit quality on a computer screen. You don't give two shits about art, you just want one more thing to try to validate your bullshit with.

Why don't you try living as a film-maker before telling somebody else to do it? It's easy to say "You should be above making any money" when you're not the one in that position in the first place.

If you're going to pirate, call it what it is. Obtaining a product that you didn't pay for. The fact of the matter with piracy is that for all of the philosophical red herrings that you can toss out, if everybody pirated then the film industry would collapse.
  • all this time, i have been a comi
  • Dan
    Ex-fucking-actly.
If you make something right, create a product people really, actually desire and not just half-ass all these Final Destination 4's and American Pie 8's, people will care enough to pay money and show you they appreciate what you've created. Guaranteed the general audience will be JUST barely curious enough about Final Destination 4 (or "The Final Destination") to wait for a decent copy to show up on The Pirate Bay and see it for free. Nobody wants to spend $10 on that shit, but they'll sure as shit take a chance on it if it's costless. And that says more about your product generally than it does about the people downloading it.

The blame is on the wrong side.
  • ConcreteLogic
I love all the people whining about being called out for stealing things. As if they are just noble freedom fighters instead of a bunch of entitled children grabbing what they can. Do what you want, just don't pretend you are robin hood. You're a shoplifter who plays it safe.
  • TyroneBillings
That's what obama does isn't it-- steals from the rich gives to the poor. Downloading is an f-u to the entertainment industry because it's so closed off to the rest of us. The best though is downloading thugass gangsta rappers who rap about killing, stealing, robbing and then downloading their album for free...that is sweet justice.
  • I like the irony of calling yourself ConcreteLogic when you are clearly misinformed.
  • Matt
I like the irony of you taking the position of smug enlightenment when you don't bother to offer up a counter-argument.
  • arr
In Soviet Russia, creator's rights own you!
  • Godless
Hey hey hey, we're thieves not commies. Get it right.
  • shameless
the dark knight was the most pirated movie of 2008. it was also the top grossing film of 2008. you make good movies, you still make money.

they do not turn a profit! leave them alone!
  • Matt
So hundreds of thousands of below the line crew jobs should rest upon the very tenuous shoulders of the above the line people who give them orders? If you're not entertained, they deserve to be put at risk?
  • Yes, exactly. They know what theyre getting into when they sign up for the job. Do cops bitch when one of em gets shot? Its all apart of the job, no matter if youre a grip or youre the fucking producer.
  • dagreenman18
Then a commie i am, cause im not paying money for crap films i only download to laugh my ass off at. You want me to pay? Then make a film worth sshelling out for, like Up! or The Hangover, or Drag Me To Hell.
  • OMG
and so what if it is? Isn't communism at heart is a beloved system, a sharing and caring system. Fascism, dictatorship, totalitarianism were what the soviet, north korea, cuba, etc were. If there were true communism, no1 would get left behind. It'd be heaven. Heaven is a communist system if you ask me.
  • Communism is garbage. It stifles creativity, free thought, and competition. It goes against human nature and destroys the individual in favor of the collective.
  • Communism doesn't stifle creativity and free thought, nor harmless forms of competition (only fiscal backstabbing). You are confusing communism with the actions of several "communist" regimes.
  • Do you know about neurons?
If yes, why don't you use them?
  • ConcreteLogic
Communism is great in theory, the problem is it can and will never work on a large scale.
  • Damn right you are, OMG.
Though being european, I still believe there are still a few clever fellows in the US.
  • Phew. For a second I was worried that Milos Forman wasn't alive still.
