Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island Movie Trailer

Shutter Island

Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel Shutter Island. The story follows a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) who travels to Shutter Island, a small island in Massachusetts’ Outer Harbor, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to find an escaped murderous patient in the Summer of 1954. And I’ll let the official plot description take over:

“But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. And neither is Teddy Daniels. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe’s radical approach to psychiatry? The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive them insane. . .”

Beautiful cinematography, hints of wonderful performances, and some really creepy sequences. But is it a thriller with Oscar potential? Watch the trailer after the jump, and please leave your thoughts in the comments below!

The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, and Jackie Earle Haley. Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple.com. Shutter Island is scheduled to hit theaters on October 2nd 2009.

  • Luke
It was such an amazing book. I could see Leo getting an Oscar nom if he pulls off the character.
  • NightAvatar
Was this written before or after Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone? Both amazing films, btw.

Leo is terrific in everything I've seen him do. He even surprised me in "Revolutionary Road" though Kate owned that film.
  • Looks surprisingly creepy and atmospheric. Good stuff, this seems very different from anything Scorsese has done before.
  • I was thinking the same thing. I have never been a huge fan of Scorsese, but this looks genuinely interesting. I'll definitely give this a look.
  • Why So Serial?
Yeah!!! Its about time Scorsese made something interesting and good...............
  • TheDude
I really, really hope that was sarcasm
  • Peter
Yes, doesn't look like typical Scorsese fair. Very creepy and atmospheric. Hope he can pull it off convincingly.

It really reminded me of The Wicker Man (not the Nic Cage one)
  • MonkeyMafia
I think it's in line with Cape Fear (good things all around)
  • Cape Fear was more of a subtle, slow burn creepy. This looks like balls to the wall creepy.
Still, that's probably about the best comparison to another Scorsese movie that there is, so yeah, that's a good point.
  • Looks interesting for Leo Movie. Hopefully it stays up to it's Trailer. :)
  • Mike
    Leo's getting pretty fat
  • Kyle
He had to gain weight for the role
  • aaa
its called method acting you douche
  • Method acting is about relating a your role to your own life experiences and the mastery of internal emotion over external emotion. not gaining weight. douche. Don't shove an incorrect reference in someone's face. Gaining weight has nothing to do with 'method acting'. I'm sure Elia Kazan would love to hear what you think method acting is. Watch 'On the Waterfront' or something. Gaining weight might help leo look like a character more and says something about how dedicated he is to his craft, but method acting is more about what a character isn't saying while on screen. Common misperception is that if you're dedicated to a role you're automatically 'method acting'. That's nonsense.
  • It looks cool, not like the typical Martin Scorcese film. Like you said nice cinematography and disturbing imagery. It kind of looks like a big budget horror/thriller like Martin Scorcese does Saw or something, plus it's coming out in October, hmm...
  • I totally agreed. I think the closes thing I could relate to was maybe Cape Fear.
  • shameless
yeah, i like to see martin scorcese go outside of his comfort zone with a thriller type of deal. furthermore, leo needs to stop doing that accent.
  • shatner
looks amazing. can't wait to see out. And rememer children go watch star trek!
  • Kyle
This looks really good, been waiting for this!
  • The Wicker Man + Shock Corridor + 1408 = Martin Scorsese's last film. This must stop now.
DiCraprio's catalog of horrible accents and facial hair have made him the Lon Chaney of shit sandwiches. The rest of the cast and the cinematography does look great, but that doesn't make me want to see this film. Especially when we get another trailer showing the whole fucking thing!
All this trailer was missing was flash-cuts to black and a heartbeat, but even then it would have no soul behind it. Please Marty, stop casting Leotardo or I will burn every "picture" of yours I own with the exceptions of Taxi Driver and Bringing Out The Dead. Not out of respect for you, but for Paul Schrader's writing. You are nothing without his voice and you have lost your fucking mind.
  • CPHTB
    Yeah. You're an idiot.
  • Jeremy
    I second that.
  • Could you elaborate please? That would be more fun.
  • youtrollyou
You're a troll. Your opinion is trollish.
  • Spiteful little one. Give me a good reason to see this and get excited... pleeeease?
  • trollerblading
    you're a troll on a roll
  • Well said.
  • Donald Duck
His accent wasn't awful, you're just used to NOT hearing him talk like that so it sounds funny to you. This happens all the time with actors and is the #1 reason why people say "awful accent." It was actually dead on accurate.
  • I DON'T want to get used to him doing ANYTHING. He is cinematic cancer and there is no cure for him.
  • How is he a cinematic cancer you have lost your fucking mind
  • Your right.
  • Donald Duck is right.
  • Jack Burton
    Bringing Out the Dead? Really?
  • Really. Check it out again, and see Nic Cage lose his mind for real, not from the realization that he's in another movie destined for the gas station rack. That film shows the New York I remember, loved, and feared winding up dead in all at the same time. Everyone in it is out of their fucking mind and I love it! Truly, this is Scorsese's love letter to the end of and era and the effect it had on its inhabitants.
  • Bringing Out the Dead is amazing and one of Scorsese's many underrated gems (The King of Comedy).
  • Dude, I respect your willingness to stand by your convictions, no matter how unpopular. And I'll (sorta) agree with one thing: it's a little odd how often Scorsese is using DiCaprio these days.

However, you're full of shit on the rest.

I'm guessing you weren't bitching when Scorsese was using De Niro in damn near all of his films--and these days. DiCaprio's work beats De Niro's times 10, easy. I didn't much care for Leo before either, but he's really proved himself in recent years. He wasn't quite my "dream choice" for the Mystic River lead, but I'm confident he can make it work.

Also, the source material is a lot stronger than you're making it out to be. And, the trailer didn't give away too much--there are a ton of developments it doesn't spoil at all.

BTW, Scorsese is "nothing" without Paul Schrader's writing? Yeah, that's just silly. Schrader's did some fine work in the day, but over the past TWO DECADES the best work he's produced has been adaptations.

Meanwhile, even if you somehow find a way to discount The Departed, After Hours and Casino, much less all of Scorsese's other fine efforts sans Schrader, I only have one word to point out how crackheaded you are:

    Goodfellas.

    Game, set, match, bitch.
  • rofl, owned....
  • musicsoup
don't agree with everything, but i agree that this kinda gave away a lot. i didn't read the book, and i've done zero following of the movie, so i don't know how it ends. but if leo ends up being the missing patient and he's all shit crazy, and it was all in his mind or something lame like that, then that kinda sucks, no? and if that is how it ends, it could have still been presented differently in the trailer. hopefully the movie is better than that.
  • Men, men, no Fighting in the War Room!

But yeah, color me intrigued. Hmm, such a strange term.
  • NightAvatar
That's exactly what I was thinking. I'll be pissed if that's what happens. Because we've seen that too many freaking times already.
  • Jamieson
What happens when I lose all hope in modern film? Well, Its just so happens, that I see the trailer for this movie. Thank God. I remember, now, why I love movies.
  • rnl
lost all hope in modern film?
    Really sir?

I'll agree with you that it looks good though.
  • Donald Duck
Let's just say that the movie reveals...too much.
  • sign me up!
  • i was going to say sign me up, damn it! but seriously, where do i sign up? what an amazing cast. and i haven't read any dennis lehane but the film versions of his stories have so far been quite riveting, (mystic river, gone baby gone), i am so on board for this after that trailer. wow.
  • monosierra
Gosh .... I think you might be right! Twist revealed! He probably killed Michelle Williams' character.
  • He also reveals that "He is too old for this shit!" and then flies to the moon.
  • Looks really creepy.
  • This looks great so far :O
  • Dvq
been waiting for this ages, looks amazing as expected, cant wait to see the whole thing.
