Paramount Pictures has released the first photo of Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix from Iron Man 2. See the full photo after the jump.

The accompanying article in USA Today clears up a few things. The suit, which the Russian criminal put together, consists of a pair of whips, powered by the glowing chest piece. Director Jon Favreau says that the technology used in Rourke’s suit is “definitely related” to the tech developed by Tony Stark, and “that’s part of the core theme of the film.”

It seems to me that this is likely from a sequence early into Vanko’s career as a super villain, so I’d assume that this suit is the Mark 1 version that the character constructed out of found parts in jail or what not. I’m sure we’ll see a more advanced version of this suit later in the film. But that’s just a guess on my part. Head on over to Screenrant to see the photo in high res. Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Iron Man 2

It’s still not clear how much of the character varies from the original Marvel Comics. When asked if Vanko is a weapons designer who works for Tony Stark’s competitor Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), Favreau replied, “We like to play into and against the expectations that people might have so, we mixed it up a bit.”

Iron Man 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7th 2010.

  • awesome
  • I was doubting this at first.
I am no longer doing that.
  • I hope that's not the final suit. Cause... anybody could just shoot him with a gun.
  • lena120
    LOL!
  • Chris
His special power is that he has super control over his whips and can use them to deflect typical gunfire.
  • adam
it's not his final suit, he just broke out of prison.
  • And he decides to stop and watch the races?
  • JMCG
In the comics, the whips stop bullets---- they are charged by the arc-reactor and are , well, faster than a speeding bullet....
  • That looks...that looks kind of dumb.
  • It looks like Forrest Gump's leg braces.
  • Well, so was the Mark 1 Iron Man suit, as well as the first Spidey outfit.

Imagine a Mark 3 Whiplash suit. And the obvious battle with Tony Stark. Whoo-hoo.
  • Looks like super-hobo
  • Homeless superhero. That's one of the greatest ideas I've ever heard of. Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne too much money. Clark Kent comfortable plus the fastest typist ever. A homeless down on his luck guy who becomes a superhero. He can't save himself but is driven to save everyone else.

    I like it.
  • Hancock or Rorschach?
  • walter kovacs
    rorschach kicks ass.
  • thelastknowngod
    The Maxx
  • sweet
a the maxx movie would be so cool
  • andy
well joker in the dark knight is a homeless super villian. He only uses basic cheap weapons and parts. Shuns money because it represents order and seems to revel in his ingenuity.
  • bob
joker isnt a supervillian considering he doesnt have superpowers
  • Mattalica
This sucks, he looks like he belongs in Gladiator...full suit would be better...
  • Considering that's what the inner framing for the Iron-Man suit looks like. I'm pretty sure the full suit will be in the film. Also notice the prisoner over-alls.
  • musicsoup
also notice the open gate in the background. where's harley davidson and the marlboro man 2? don johnson needs a comeback too!
  • not the best suit for him.
  • craig
what you mean this is not his final suit
  • what you mean what you mean this is not his final suit
  • kjc007
    That looks awesome
  • It looks like he has a prison jumpsuit on. I wonder if that means anything. Maybe he broke out of prison or something.
  • An american prison maybe. No russian Prison uses such jumpsuits.
  • You know how Mickey used to be really good looking and then his face got fucked up and all that. Now he's starting to look distinctive and really rather fucking cool. Like Walken. Neither good looking cats now but both very cool looking. Walken was beautiful too when he was younger.

    I'm I wrong?

    One large vodka too many?

I dunno. After The Wrestler I'm excited about seeing Rourke in anything. This is more about Mickey than Iron Man to me.

Who would have thought it a couple of years ago (like maybe five). Downey and Rourke headling a (potential) summer blockbuster. Or like they would both be still alive.
  • Justin
Perhaps the movie takes a core of the story from the first story arc from the Matt Fraction series Invincible Iron Man that started around the same time the first movie came out. The first part of the series focused on Stane's son, Ezekial Stane, using Stark's old suits and parts of his technology taken from the Black Market to bring down Stark International. Obviously using Stane's son in the second movie would be silly, but using pieces of the Mark 1 obtained from the black market isn't so far fetched.
  • Dan P.
I bet Rourke will be great no matter what, but for the love of God let's hope this is an early prototype like Stark's M1 suit.

As of now it looks like something out of Waterworld...
  • Lawdog
    I'd say that's a pretty safe bet.
  • Palmer
Well that's something. So it's safe to say that the Armor Wars storyline is going to be incorporated some how.
  • odd looking suit but I'll go with Favreau on this one. he's the man!
  • [A]
    Me likey.
  • [A]
    Quiet you! Haha kidding
  • ashley
rourke did visit a russian prison when he was promoting the wrestler so he probably did break out of prison in the movie
  • Khuzud
The power supply should be red... amirite?
  • This looks pretty stupid to be honest.
  • dannyboy
why it look stupid the suit his wearing is a prototype
  • He looks hardcore!
  • He looks like he is the middle of a race track...maybe about to destroy some race car there....
  • o_o
    weird
  • mangoskiwis
that does look. odd. some high quality leather for a prison.
  • ag
    gay
  • It looks like death race..thats not good.
  • Maybe in context this will look cool, but just as a single photo it looks goofy as hell
  • Jean Valjean
Looks like a bionic homeless squeegee guy, haven't seen that before.
  • Dvq
looks odd but hey! its Jon Favreau, hes the man.
  • Hard to make a call, not knowing where this falls in the film, but I like it. I agree, it's probably not the character's "final" outfit, which likely is not so, um, "exposed." I'll give it a conditional thumbs up.
