VOTD: Mark Osborne’s More

More

Before Kung Fu Panda and SpongeBob SquarePants, Mark Osborne wrote and directed a stop-animated shot film titled More. The Academy Award-nominated short tells the story of a lonely inventor, whose colorless existence is brightened only by dreams of the carefree bliss of his youth.

By day, he is trapped in a dehumanizing job in a joyless world. But by night, he tinkers away on a visionary invention, desperate to translate his inspiration into something meaningful. When his invention is complete, it will change the way people see the world. But he will find that success comes at a high price, as it changes himself, as well.

The movie was the first short film to be shot in the IMAX format, and took nine months to complete. The 6-minute short also won the special jury prize at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, Best Animated short at the 1999 South by Southwest Film Festival, and ranks #10 on IMDB’s top 50 user ranked best short films of all time list. This was also used as the music video for Kenna's Hellbent, if I'm not mistaken. Incredible short, always found it amazing.

i like black & white films but it's clever combinations like this that make me just love color.
  • Alex
Yeah, when I think of this, I think of the Kenna video. Perfect combo: Kenna and this short.
  • This was an amazing short. I first saw it a long time ago on scifi channel when they first started Exposure, a timeslot devoted to shorts. This was definitely one of the better shorts they aired though. Second only to one called Antebios which i thought was fricken awesome as well.

A fantastic animated short. I usually hate the VOTD's as most are soulless parodies, but VOTD's such as this are great. I think I saw this on Sundance or IFC a while back. *Just saying...

I liked how bliss was the new happiness.
I wonder how awesome Avatar's going to be when it changes into Navi/Human-Hybrid mode.

Love seeing this on here. I, too, found this through Exposure many years ago on Sci-Fi. It was the reason I fell in love with short films.

Nice pick. I have this on a Wholphin DVD and I try and share it with everyone. It's extremely well done and the simple plot always leaves me re-thinking my motivations in life.
  • No mention of how similar it is to Tim Burton's 9?

I noticed the Kenna reference too, I hope they have sowed their legalities!
  • I remember this when it was released... still amazing -- music plays a big part in the emotion put forward here...
  • I also have this video on a DVD, it's on one of the "Short" dvd collections (#7 - Utopia). The Short collection is pretty freaking amazing if you can find them, they are distributed by Warner Bros, produced by Quickband.
  • More is a truely profound work of Animation...and a real credit to why I love movies so much. I just wish Mark Osbourne hadn't sold his soul to Dreamworks.

For your information, the music is by 1980's artist "New Order".

    The song is called "Elegia".
  • Steb
I prefer the Kenna song over New Order. Regardless this is amazing work.
  • As long as it keeps people talking about the awesomeness of Kenna, I'm happy.
  • I recall seeing this before a long while back. Still just as good as I remember.
  • So on ET's home planet he was a slave?
