Robert Rodriguez is about to go back to the future - or, to borrow the spin from the Grindhouse publicity, go “back to back” to the future. Quite obviously, he’s not preparing a remake of Robert Zemeckis’ unparalleled time travel trilogy but instead, prepping a pair of future-bound movies of his own. First up is Nerverackers, now in pre-production and then, confirmed to MTV as his next project, is the long brewing live-action adaptation of The Jetsons. Yet another delay for Sin City 2, the promised sequel that I’m personally most doubtful we’ll ever get to see. Details on Nerveracker and The Jetsons to follow.

Nerveracker has been on the boil at least since 2001. The official press release described it like this:

Nerveracker is set in the year 2085 and centers on the character Joe Tezca, part of an elite unit who is sent in to stop a crime wave amongst a perfect futuristic society. In the process, he discovers that “Nerverackers” are on a rampage for control of the city. Tezca consequently sets forth on a mission to reveal the cover up by the ruling class and stop the “Nerverackers” before time runs out. Nerveracker is set for an April 16, 2010 release.

That’s all well and good but… what on earth is a Nerveracker? Why does it want to take control of “the city” and why do the ruling class want to cover it up? I guess we’ll know pretty soon.

The very same press release confirmed that The Jetsons was still in development, though gave no indication of when it would shoot. Rodriguez has now told MTV that “We’re writing the script right now”, which probably means the widely distributed Adam F. Goldberg draft will likely have little resemblance to the produced picture. It wasn’t a terrible script, but it had almost nothing to say and I would exactly be sad to see it hit the shredder.

With two future metropolises (Metropoli? Metropolodes?) to conceive, I’m hoping Rodriguez and his designers have got the stuff to make each of them distinct, immersive and compelling. Perhaps he can get Sid Mead on the blower and buy a bit of that Blade Runner pixie dust.

It might be timely to recall that, for a good while, Robert Rodriguez was in the frame to direct the Land of the Lost motion picture. He seems a good fit for some of the Kroft properties, if you ask me. Lidsville, maybe? Just imagining that makes me smile. Throw in Johnny Depp as Weenie the Genie and I’ll pre-order the DVD now.

Okay, there’s one little assumption at the heart of this story that might just be plain wrong. Rodriguez told MTV that The Jetsons would film “next year”, and I have assumed that this procludes any other film of his going before cameras in the meantime. Judging from his typical turnaround times, I’d say that’s most likely right, and particularly so with producing projects like Predators tapping into his time too.

  • Is it me or Rodriguez talks too much? He already announced like ten projects or something, but we haven't seen anything done yet. Did he start filming anything from what he promised? o.0
  • mangos
he spoke at my commencement(woot Texas '09). he actually didn't speak too much. pretty entertaining. maybe now that he's finally a college grad he'll get to work(har).
  • King Ralph
Agreed as much as I like the guy and his movies he's been a lot of talk and not a lot of anything else past few years
  • What... you want one of his movies to get produced? I'm happy with them languishing. Alright, alright... so I liked Planet Terror and From Dusk Til Dawn. He needs to stick to monster movies, it's his niche.
  • Dylan
    The Jetsons? Uh, no.
  • It's going to fare as well as Viva Rock Vegas at best.
  • bomberman
well, I no longer care about 'Machete'

    its been too long.
  • Ben
Imagine if The Jetsons is made by Sharkboy and Lava Girl Robert Rodriguez.......I'm having a seizure just thinking about it. And not in a good (i.e. speed racer) way.
  • Who Ha
    Bump.
  • I didn't even know they were making a live-action version of "The Jetsons." I just wonder if it can be done.
  • "Quite obviously, he’s not preparing a remake of Robert Zemeckis’ unparalleled time travel trilogy"

I specifically read this article just to make sure this was the case. My gosh. I seriously almost panicked.

I can handle remakes of The Wizard of Oz, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and even a Where's Waldo movie. But I swear, the day the remake/sequel crowd *touches* my Back to the Future series, I'm going off.
  • Hopefully The Jetsons movie will be as good as the live action film versions of Scooby Doo and The Flinstones. ;)
  • jason B
    ha! well played sir.
  • The_Kid
I just wonder who will be cast in a jetsons movie?

i don't give a shit about any of his 3 upcoming projects (Never, Jets, Predatr) - and that really sucks because i love this guy as a director. when he and tarantino came bursting out with resevoir & mariachi i saw (hoped) for BIG things. he's made 1 masterpiece since (sin city imho), and then proceeded to dick the fuck around.

the real frustration is that with all the money he's wasted fucking about, some newcomer could have blown us all away - but will probably never be heard from. so it goes...
  • phew, the title made me panic for a second
  • Danny DeVito better be Spacely. There's no other choice. And Harlan Williams as George Jetson = gold.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Truth be told, his sensibilities were probably best fit by the Barbarella project. I love Rodriguez, but a good science fiction film from him is a stretch. I like his ambition and ,maybe, he has something in him that can deliver something cool with Nerverackers. I hope so.

I love everything Jetsons, but I'd be shocked if this wasn't being produced as standard Rodriguez kiddie fare. Kinda bums me out. I guess the best case scenario is that he hopes to apply his Sin City tech to creating an appropriate retro future. It's not the Jetsons movie we could wish for, but that would be better than his kid stuff.
  • Yeah somehow i dont think its going to work that well , probably should stick to the whole death action/crime/thriller type movies which he is good at. I say just get sin city 2 done first :)
  • what the hell man.. I've been waiting for sin city 2 since.. ages!
  • topheavy
Yeah, me thinks that he got this weird feeling in the pants when Miller borrowed from the look of Sin City for the Spirit. Me too bro..
  • rachel
Looking at the plot of Nerverackers, i noticed something.
If you replace "2085" with "2015", "Joe Tezca" with "Rick Deckard", and "Nerverackers" with "Replicants", what do you get?
  • Why, why, why? Godammit, Rodriguez. It's simple: Sin City 2 and Machete and then I'll give you a pass on the next ten years. I'm talking slavishly devoted fanship here. You made Shorts. That's fine. I get it. But two more movies and no mention of these flicks we've been waiting for?! At least give me a Robert Rodriguez directed Predators or Barbarella! Shit, give me a new Dusk Till Dawn or Desperado movie! Anything but more kids stuff at this point. The only reasonable excuse is that he is paying for Machete with the funds he gets from the f@$king Jetsons.
