Now that Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt have Inglourious Basterds more or less behind them (Tarantino has test-screened the film in the US and is making additional edits now) will the pair work together again? Anne Thompson suggests that they might. She’s perpetuating a report found in the Times of London that Tarantino and Pitt are interested in the Millennium Trilogy, three hugely popular books by Swedish author Stieg Larsson.

The first novel, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (originally called Män som hatar kvinnor, which translates to Men Who Hate Women) is about Mikael Blomkvist, a magazine publisher (the mag is called Millennium, hence the trilogy title) who is brought into a cold case investigation involving a missing heiress. Working with a Lisbeth Salander, a punkish hacker girl, he finds a classic ‘locked room’ mystery, where the suspects are all gathered together on an island estate.

The book has already spawned a Swedish film which did quite well in Scandinavian release this year. If the project happens and Pitt appears in it (rather than just producing, which would be an intriguing option) he would likely play Blomkvist. But Salander is the real star of the novel. That puts the story in consistent Tarantino territory, as he frequently features strong female roles.

But there’s behind the scenes friction. Larsson died in 2004, and his novels have become massively popular in Europe in the wake of his passing. But that has also created tension and problems. Larsson had lived with his girlfriend Eva Gabrielsson for 30 years, but since they were never married, his estate has passed instead to his estranged father and brother. Gabrielsson still has possession of a laptop containing an unpublished fourth Millennium novel, and possibly outlines for several other novels as well. The Larssons are negotiating rights sales for a variety of Millennium adaptations and offshoots, and one comment to the Times stands out.

We are inundated with requests for permission to make plays and cartoon strips out of Millennium…Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt would like to buy the rights for a remake of the film. We want [Eva Gabrielsson's] opinion.

All of which sounds thin and wildly speculative. In the wake of interest around Inglourious Basterds it’s no surprise that Tarantino would circle potential follow-ups, but he’s likely circling a lot of them. This is just one quote about one potential interest. So I wouldn’t get too excited just yet, especially with the family contention that could cause trouble for any big rights sale.

Terrible idea, the movie was JUST released here in Scandinavia. Go watch that instead of remaking something that's 2-3 months old.
  • If it did well in Scandinavia, it will sell like hot cakes here in the U.S. with Brad Pitt and Quentin Tarantino on board.
  • I really like the handful of Scandinavian movies I have seen. How is "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"?
  • agreed, I'm angry that they're remaking LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.
  • I´m spanish and here the novels are huge at the moment. The movie was released just two weeks ago and is thirds at the box-office, quite a great place for an european film, only behind Terminator and Angels & Demons.

sorry to hear that terminator is doing so well...

god i hope this happens. pitt & QT seem like a, excellent fit, and i really don't wanna wait another decade for the next QT film, ya dig?

Isn't all of Tarantino's work totally original? So why all of a sudden is there a rumor/possibility that he will be doing an adapation, and a remake of something that's 2 months old no less, of a series of books? Maybe this next decade, he'll be all about remakes and adaptations, letting his creative spirits run on a leash? (Let's hope not)
  • QT + totally original? Um, no. Even discounting the degree to which he's copped directly from other films (which is his thing, fine, no big deal) there is Jackie Brown, which is an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 'Rum Punch'. A LOOSE adaptation, sure, but still...

Anne Thompson got the 'QT's work is all original thing' wrong, too.
  • I like the combination of Pitt and Tarantino. I'm looking forward to Inglourious Basterds and hopefully this tandem will continue to make great films.

I'm guessing QT is finally out of ideas, because now he's doing remakes. Inglorious Basterds must have been his big ticket the one he's been waiting to make for years. I hope he doesn't get into the remaking business. I'd rather him make an original instead.

I myself is from Sweden and I have both read and watched the movies/books and I think they are just awesome, best book I have ever read... you guys should totally read the book... then watch the movie :)
  • I'm a swede aswell and I totally loathe this movie and I'm not sure this is the right stuff for Tarantino. The movie plays out like a slow paced thriller with character development and mistery.
Sure, I love Pitt as an actor, but he is nowhere near the right material for the role of Blomkvist. Blomquist is more of a Clooney-type character, or a younger Tom Wilkinson. I could totally see Tony Gilroy in the director's chair and Rosario Dawson (or a lesser known actress) as Salander.

Tarantino should stick to his off the chart stylized action and cool dialogue.

knockoff of the sick of it all dragon!
  • This has all the potential to be quite interesting. At least as long as QT rewrite it in his one style. The Swedish film is quite excellent. The story has a very potential intrique and QT could pull it through.

QT sucks big-time and is definitely the wrong person for this movie -- way too much comic book violence for this serious tale of abuse of women in every way. Brad would be perfect as Blomkvist, though, now that he's old yet can still attract the babes. And Rosario Dawson? NOT: Salander is 4'9" with no boobs, 24 and looks 14, what are you thinking?
  • I was skeptical that Tarantino and Pitt were anything but a fantasy on the part of the late author's family--being used as an excuse to paint the estranged ex-partner in a bad light--I heard back from Tarantino's agent that there's been no mention of interest in this project.
  • I really hope this happens.
  • Tarantino would be THE dream director for putting the trilogy on the big screen. My only hope would be to indeed actually make 3 movies, and not simply condense the whole story into one action movie!

    Is the movie MA15?
