Stoic Movie Trailer: Uwe Boll Gets Serious!

boll_stoic

What if Uwe Boll made a movie that wasn’t trash? That’s not to say that Stoic, starring Edward Furlong as a prison inmate who is involved in the savage death of his cellmate, will actually be good, but does the new trailer for the movie actually suggest that Bol is…trying? gasp! Watch the clip after the jump.

Stoic is one of three planned non-videogame projects for the combative director. His next two films could be Darfur (with Furlong and Kristanna Loken) and The Storm, with Lauren Holly and Luke Perry. But if this represents the tone Boll is planning to take with those two movies, I might be more actively frightened of the guy’s future than his past.

Which brings me back to the notion of Boll making a movie that isn’t trash. Because Stoic looks trashy as hell, if only in a more ‘artistic’ fashion than his game movies. The story follows three prisoners who played poker, with the loser being forced to eat his own vomit in a sort of hazing ritual that devolves into rape and murder/suicide. Supposedly the origin is in a true story which, you know, makes it all more legit.

The trailer suggests that the movie could be full of confessional interviews, and I’ll admit that there’s something weird and almost (almost!) compelling about seeing Boll do his confrontational, excessively violent version of Errol Morris’ recent Abu Ghraib documentary Standard Operating Procedure. Mix in some of Gaspar Noe’s Irreversible and influences like the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Hubert Selby Jr. novel The Room (an examination of a prisoner’s rage and revenge fantasies that is unrelated to Tommy Wiseau’s awful masterpiece film of the same name) and Stoic could almost be something interesting. But I don’t get the sense that Boll is trying to do anything more than shock and provoke, except that this time his target is an arthouse audience. I’d love to be wrong; there’s a contrarian part of me that would love to see Boll actually make a movie worth watching. He keeps trying, and I have a weird respect for that, despite the fact that the results never seem to vary or improve. Do I actually expect anything to change this time? Not really, and based on this clip not with this film.

Note: doing a little more searching after I saw this clip on Twitch I found that the same trailer has been around in lesser quality for a while. But we haven’t run it before, so I’m going with it now.

uwe boll reminds me of the guy on American Movie. Passionate with no talent at all.

I have watched many interviews with Boll. Mainly he is very stubborn and thinks he is some kind of visionary or some shit. He does the movie the way he wants, not the way it could be successful.

NO one wants to sign on a project if they know it will be a complete bomb, unless they are destitute for money. Are you telling me that Jason Statham really needed money that badly he signed on for Dungeon Seige Tale because of this? Same goes for many other like John Malkovich, Ron Pearlman, etc. These guys only signed because of the script or friendship with Boll. Nothing to do with a paycheck really, these movies payout are very small to begin with.
  • Bull
John Malkovich? He was never is some dogshit Uwe Boll film.
  • I didnt think he was either, i think he is thinking of eragon.
  • Another bag of shit movie from uwe, god bless him.
  • Something about his face makes me rage inside. I want to destroy everything that helps him make movies.
  • The only thing worst then Uwe Boll making a bad movie based on a video game, is him making a bad movie while trying to be serious. The trailer looked horrible, the acting was horrible.

    Looks like a youtube video...
  • I've meet Boll and he's a pretty nice dude. Good sense of humor about himself. But, yeah...
  • I would LOVE it if he made a truly great film. Wouldn't that be hilarious? I mean the odds are fairly stacked up that all he touches turns to shit but what if

Well, I have mixed feeling about Uwe Boll. I respect the fact that he has a vision for his movies, and he has been able to enlist a great deal of stars that I am a fan of to act in these movies. I just wish his vision was more flexible. I think he owes it to these stars to be more flexible, they at least believe in him enough to sign on, he could do the same and try and make the movies a little more mainstream in thought and execution.

There have been a couple of his movies where I thought, you know if he would have done this or that a little different, this could have actually been decent or even good. It just seems he will not sway from his vision no matter what.
  • Vision? What the FUCK are you talking about? Have you ever read ANY interview with him?
  • They didn't believe in him. They believed on the paycheck

He explained why he keeps to make movies. Game movies are easily marketable and nerds with go to they favourite game flick no matter what the quality is so they all return the cash put into them. This way he makes profit and keeps making movies.

  • Doctor_Fu_Manchu
oh yeah a movie about prison rape and killing looks good.
  • Captain Molotov
Looks like the best Uwe Boll movie ever.

Which is like saying, "Looks like the most friendly concentration camp ever."
  • Pretty cool, thanks.
  • This movie is probably going to be horrible like all other Boll movies, but this time he decided to film an incredibly shocking and gruesome event that took place in a German juvenile jail in 2007. If you want to learn more I recommend the following sources:

i can't believe that actually looks somewhat watchable. people also forget that furlong is a really good actor.
  • Have you seen the Crow?
  • The crow was good
Have you seen American History X, Terminator 2, or Detroit Rock City?
  • This doesn't make up for all the horrible movies he's made. You pissed the internets off, sir, and from them there is no forgiveness.

Whomever is paying him to keep making BloodRayne movies: Please STOP.
  • I still won't see it because I don't to give the jerk any money.
  • Dullard
Bowel's stuff still looks horrible. Was pleasantly surprised with Furlong in that clip though.
Still waiting for the ultimate film combination of Boll and Asylum.
  • Yet somehow this dude is working on 6 upcoming projects according to IMDB. He should film movies like "Superhero Movie" and "Meet the Spartans", that would make more sense.
  • Uhm... that wasn't a prison gangrape I just saw towards the end, was it?!
  • I'm pretty sure they were just trying to return his wallet.
