In order to publicize The Strain, his new vampire novel written by with Chuck Hogan, Guillermo del Toro has been doing an awful lot of interviews. The best, perhaps, have been with MTV, at least in terms of the off-topic news they’ve managed to squeeze out of the fella. Not only have they had him all but spell out where the split between two films is going to come in his telling of The Hobbit, they’ve even teased out a confession that, at last, Del Toro is down to a single choice in the casting of Bilbo Baggins.

The specific format of this Hobbit adaptation hasn’t been too clear until now, but the following quotes from Del Toro nail it down pretty solidly:

I’m doing only two movies because I felt that that was the best way to service the book. I’m not saying the other notion was not discussed. We discussed it a large degree. But I felt that for me, the two films were the way to go.

When you read the book, there is only one place to break it really, and everybody knows it. It’s been discussed in forums and there’s a lot of people that are right. That’s where it’s going to break. So it’s very simple. What we’re doing is because we have the relationship between Bilbo and Thorin and all the dwarves, there is a logical place for that relationship. There is a moment in the book where something is accomplished that allows us to say, ‘Okay, on to the next one after this.’

As for the inclusion of material from the appendices, it seems that the run time of the two films will be expanded with “White Council or the Dol Guldur additions.”

I’m personally 100% sure that the break point he’s talking about is when Bilbo and the dwarves escape the Mirkwood elves on a raft made of barrels. That’s the chapter Barrels out of Bond, which I think does pretty much mark the half way point. And by my reckoning, that means the White Council and Dol Guldur scenes would feature in the second film. I’m no Tolkien expert, though - I probably know even less than those Rings-rappers Peter put on Page 2 earlier this week.

If you’re wanting to bet on who will play Bilbo, get down to the bookies now. Del Toro tells MTV to expect the casting news within “the next few weeks”. If I have to pin my colours to one particular option… ohh… I’m finding it a tough call, but I think Ewen McGregor is looking pretty likely.

Ewan McGregor? Not that I'm against the idea but I thought the everyone assumed it was going to be James McAvoy or Michael Sheen.
  • /ambent
Ewan McGregor? Did i read sarcasm Brendon?
  • CyT
Good call. Im surprised I had not thought of him but it does fit very well. I thought everyone was going to be saying Shia for the role!
  • Bobo
I'm curious on who they're going to cast as the 12 dwarves.
  • mcgregor is good. he should rock in the role.
  • Greggory Basore
Am I the only one who was hoping we'd see Sir Ian Holm reprise the role of Bilbo?
  • I was hoping for the same thing, until I saw the godawful de-aging processes employed in X-Men: The Last Stand. It would be unlikely that they would go the Benjamin Button route.
  • Jebus christ did you see Prof X in Wolverine? my god he looked scary.
  • He's just too old to do it now. Same reason Sir Ian McKellan won't be reprising Magneto in the spin off. Even with the state of the art CGI, it's just too much. And on top of that, I think Sir Ian Holm, like Christopher Lee, has said that he does not have it in him any more to make a 12 hour plane ride to New Zealand. So recasting Bilbo was a must and, despite rumors of him being worked into the script, Saruman likely will not be appearing.

But yes, I was hoping for more Holm. I love him as an actor and thought he brilliantly portrayed the elder version of Bilbo in Lord of the Rings. I think Ewan McGregor is a good choice to take up the role though. He showed his brilliance in taking an older man's role and making the progression from young to old seem seamless in the Star Wars prequels.
  • No way, man! I'm with you on this one all the way. Just use special effects and makeup to make him look younger sort of like Benjamin Button.
  • Captain Thunderball
    James McAvoy would be better.

I love that guy, he should get more work in the states.
  • Mont.ee
I agree totally, james McAvoy has also played tumnus in narnia, okay i know totallyyy different role, but at the same time, i think he has the skill to play mythical creatures.
+As far as im concerned Ewan McGregor will also be the carmenlengo (or how ever you spell it) from angels and demons LOL, ive just got that image planted in my head.
  • Mont.ee
    ****Always
  • Alex Roessner
I would definitely like to see James McAvoy or Michael Sheen in the role - I think both suit Bilbo very well (for different reasons, though).
  • I agree JAMES MCAVOY JAMES MCAVOY JAMES MCAVOY!!!! I think he has the acting chops and the charm to become bilbo
  • Andy
I can't imagine Ewan McGregor would do this movie, it would fly in the face of his flawless streak of picking terrible, terrible films to star in.
  • Amit
    lol
  • jason B
macgregor would be a brilliant choice. macavoy would be great too, so if its either of them i'm completely satisfied.
  • Mick J
Gah, what the hell happened to the comments? They're all spaced out.
  • Justin
    Let's start a chant... Mc-A-voy! Mc-A-voy! Mc-A-voy!
  • Guillermo Del Toro should play Bilbo. Look at that pic, he's practically a hobbit.
  • Roark
At this point after all this hype of McAvoy being Bilbo...i'd be a disappointment if it was anyone else.
  • What hype? I haven't really heard anything more about McAvoy then any other speculative casting.
  • The
Why him? Why does everyone want him??? I don't honestly understand it. After seeing him in Wanted... that's all I want to see him in.Total Bad-ass. Not as some shrunken down Hobbit. In the book I figured he was a little bit older too (then again, I suck at reading LOTOR).
  • McGregor would be awesome and McAvoy was already in a Chronicles of Narnia movie so I say he's cut off from this. But I would also love to see Michael Sheen in the role he just looks like a Hobbit.
  • Yes, but Christopher Lee was in Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and Ian McKellen did LOTR and X-men, so the sci-fi/fantasy world has seen some cross-overs.
  • Yeah honestly I just don't like McAvoy a lot and would rather see somebody who hasn't been in this territory take it on.
  • I always thought Martin Freeman (Arthur Dent in the Hitchhiker's Guide) was perfect for the role of Bilbo.
  • brou
Yeah Martin Freeman would be good.
Or Jack Black if he loses some weight.
  • DaveM
I agree: Martin Freeman (also Tim [Jim] on the original British "The Office") would be PERFECT.
  • Hahaha I didn't know who everyone was referring to until you mentioned that he was in The British Office. Now that seems perfect.
  • bruce
i think you'll find its just the office. the US version is the american office. its our programe its the office in england
  • Well yea, I know it's just "The Office" I was just specifying in case someone read it and was like "That was Jim not Tim" and then got all huffy thinking I was referring to the US version.
  • Who Ha
Idk, but whomever does land the role had better negotiate points off the back end (AND follow through with it) because this movie is going to friggin' bank.
  • Brendon can't even spell Ewan right.
  • Not at 2am I can't. Thanks for the catch.
  • I would have loved to see Holm come back, especially because they showed Holm as young Bilbo finding the ring in The Fellowship of the Ring, so it was something that happened in The Hobbit. I really don't like the idea of Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy seems like a much better choice, I don't care if he was Tumnus, Lee was Count Douku. Big whoop.
  • In order of best to least choice of actor to play Bilbo:
    1. James McAvoy
    2. Michael Sheen
    3. Ewan McGregor

All are good choices and I'll be excited for whoever gets chosen.
  • I think what's his face from hitch hikers guide to the galaxy who played arthur dent. Should play Bilbo he kinda looks like a hobbit. Plus you don't need any really big names since its going to be part of the lord of the rings and two main cast members are coming back for it. Martin Freeman is his name also their are 3 cast members coming back.
  • Caleb
Del Toro should go with his own countryman, Gael Garcia Bernal. Complete the circle started with Inarritu and Cuaron.
  • Please, please be Martin Freeman. I'm betting a significant portion of my religious beliefs on whether that prayer is answered.
  • The
I'd probably just start laughing at Martin Freeman (he's the British version of Jim from the Office btw and he's in been in a TON of british films).
  • Matt Granados
"In order to publicise The Strain, his new vampire novel written by with Chuck Hogan"

Aren't you the smart ass Brendon? Do you know something the rest of us don't ? Doubt it. Because based on interviews and when I asked him at a book signing in LA, he and Chuck pretty much divvied the load.
  • Hey, the 'by' was crossed out.
  • Johan
That guy from Wanted was so annoying in both Wanted and Narnia. Hope they don´t choose him. Michaeal Sheen would be a much better choice.
  • ziggi
    will smith as bilbo!!!!!!
  • Zach
I can't help but think the break isn't going to be after mirkwood, but after they kill smaug, and before the whole battle of five armies thing. that sounds like a logical break to me, as in the first journey is done, and the second part is just about to begin. They could stretch that battle and the links between the hobbit and lotr into that film
  • Peter
Dose any body know wen it will be geting made or a release date (added by Mobile using Mippin)
  • SOS
What on earth gives you that idea? He'll be s**t
  • CyT
Dont get me wrong, I like Ewan. But he does not have it in him to play a small happy Hobbit on the path to amazing things. Hes too gruff. It needs to be someone sweeter and more innocent which are the qualities Ian Holm portrayed beautifully. I can see James McAvoy do it, but he is a bit toffee english I think, Michael Freeman looks the part but it could be a gamble putting someone of little stature in such a big pedestal, but Michael Sheen is an amazing actor so is probably the safest bet. Please stay away from Shia!
