It seems that rasp-voiced cigar-hog Clive Barker has been posting to Twitter under the name RealCliveBarker, and posting good stuff too. In just the last few days, he’s managed to spark up two very interesting flames. First, the good news: It seems that all of the missing footage from Nightbreed has been tracked down, safe and sound, and a director’s cut is now a possibility. Now, the bad news: Barker has also reported that Martyrs director Pascal Laugier is off of the Hellraiser remake. More details on both of these stories after the break.

Here’s the deal with Nightbreed in chronological tweets:

Morgan Creek has all the missing reels of NIGHTBREED.All the stuff they cut out and all that was lost to the MPAA.

NIGHTBREED will always be “that dumb movie where Barker tries to make the monsters the good guys because he’s queer. ‘

On Nightbreed. A wonderful friend of mine.Mark Miller, has located all the missing footage. Everything,it seems.

Problem now is to convince the head of Morgan Creek to spend some money putting it all back together.

His name’s Jim Robinson. He says nobody gives a damn about Nightbreed.

And, so, we know what to do. If we want a director’s cut of Nightbreed on DVD, we have to let this Jim Robinson know. I should imagine lighting up the Morgan Creek switchboard like an X-mas tree would be an attention grabber, or a mail box full of sensible, intelligently written letters. Contact details for the company are available at the foot of their (ugly and information-light) website.

Here’s the Twitter-tale of Pascal Lauguer and Hellraiser:

Pascal Laugier is regrettably no longer on the Hellraiser remake. Ithink Martyrs is extraordinary.

I don’t know much more. I mean why would anyone tell me? I mostly discover these things here or through friends who still buy the trades.

Sorry, did that sound cynical? Yeah? Good.

The Hellraiser remake hits yet another stretch of choppy waters. Those Weinstein fellas really are the perfect storm.

I’m not too sure about Barker’s skills as a filmmaker at all but he’s definitely got a strong sense of story and seems to bleed powerful ideas. He made a great match with Laugier. Yet again, Bob and Harvey seem to have turned their back on artists to clink glasses with accountants.

Unfortunately everything that is sacred or a classic to us will be changed by someone else. Was it George Lucas' prequels that made the film industry decide that we should see more origins of characters. There are many things that add up to create the character of a decade, a culture, a generation. What made it all come to an end? I think that film is not just about how something looks or sounds, it's about how it feels. To try to recapture those feelings by reinterpreting an art is almost impossible.
  • I thought Nightbreed was bad as HELL! " Cabal" was one of my favorites of Barker's. I thought the monsters being the "Good guys" was great. I would LOVE to see the missing footage. I'd actually love to see a remake with a budget, but who the fuck am I kidding?

I actually would not like to see a Hellraiser remake. It's the same as Nightmare on Elm Street for me. Unlike the other major Horror icons, Pinhead and Freddy Krueger are so strongly connected with the actors who play them. Remaking it with a different actor putting his spin on the character could be good, but it could also be terrible. I'd much rather just see something new and original from Messrs. Barker and Craven than a cash in on their most successful and original projects.
  • We need the DC of Nightbreed and as for the fucking Weinstein's they can choke on a dick, because I agree theyll butcher the shit out of this remake and try to make everyone happy. The original by far is one the best horror films to date. Watching all the slow motion and stop animation makes me feel like Im watching a TOOL video. Hopefully we can find someone with the balls to take on this mainstream PC bullshit.

    Man, Nightbreed was ultra terrible.

Damn David Cronenburg was so great in Nightbreed! More scenes in the directors cut with his character I hope?

I met Clive Barker a couple of years ago in NY for a book signing and when I asked about Nightbreed he did say something was in the works...I guess not anymore...big disappointment if that's the case.

Barker didn't have cancer, he had polyps in his throat. They were picked up in an exam as a potential cause for concern and later removed - no cancer was detected. His voice is clearer, but still quite ragged. I think he sounds pretty cool, myself!

It seems that the Weinsteins are going to work as hard as they can to ensure that the Hellraiser remake will lack all the artistic flair that made the original so distinctive. Doug Bradley's Pinhead shot in this article still looks amazing, after all these years. It would be hard for anyone to create a new version of the character that carries the same aura of beauty and brutality.

As for lobbying for a Nightbreed Director's Cut, I'm on the case...

Laugier is probably off because the Studio couldn't let him do what he wanted. I really couldn't see him being allowed to push the visuals to the extreme as he did in Martyrs. Pascal would want to and Barker probably did too but could you really see the powers that be wanting a mainstream film with that kind of shock value. Shame

I met Barker once at a book signing in portland and his voice wasn't even remotely raspy. Also glad to hear that the Night Breed footage has surfaced. I really hope we get a directors cut. As for a Hellraiser remake I think well enough should be left alone.
  • Oh man, I love Nightbreed. I might have to get a director's cut.

Didn't Clive Barker have cancer or some sort of illness? I remember seeing a documentary or something on him once, in the 90s, and his voice was not raspy like that, and he looked a lot different. He wasn't nearly so muscular. I was really surprised when I saw him a few years back looking the way he does now.

Thats terrible news. Laugier was the only person Id want involved in a new Hellraiser movie...
  • I'd love to see the lost content from "Nightbreed".

I for one give a damn about "Nightbreed"!
