Warner Bros has released a new television spot for Terminator Salvation which actually promotes Arnold Schwarzenegger’s CG appearance in the film. I thought that Arnold requested that WB not promote the movie with his image, since he only appears in the film for a short scene. Watch the tv spot after the jump.

Wow. I love commercials that use statements like "you have to see the funnest movie of the summer" that are so obviously unsourced. Better example then this are commercials for The Spirit.

Oh lordy. I think Warner Bros. is beginning to see how much of a bomb this film is (at least for their domestic earnings)

Tricking people to see this though? for shame WB.
  • nearly 100 million domestic in the first 2 weeks, it's hardly going to be a "bomb" in earnings once you roll in DVD/ BD.
  • dlb
200 Million Dollar Budget. That does not include advertising.
  • Nowadays if a movie doesn't make at least a third of it's budget on opening weekend, or half it's budget before the 2nd weekend, it's automatically considered a bomb, no matter how well reviewed it is.
  • How does an obvious and bad cg representation of The Arnold "trick" anyone into seeing the movie?

    If anything it deters.
  • Joe
Obviously scrambling due to underwhelming box office returns. At this pace it won't cover 60% of the total budget.
  • dlb
yeah... and I think columbia owns the foreign distribution
  • hahaha this part was so weird in the movie. arnold looked awful and so fake
  • Donald Duck
He looked just like he did in T1.
  • Yeah, but look at the CG. The pasted his body shoulders up on Roland Kisingers body and they clearly do not match perfectly. I didn't notice it when I saw the film, just in the picture at the top but now I see it. Arnold shouldn't be around yet. Alternate timeline or not.
  • Yeah, looked pretty good to me too. That was the highlight of an otherwise ponderous movie.
  • Yeah, the CG looked really bad.
  • mbellerbrock
I don't understand the complaints, he looked amazingly realistic, best human CGI I've ever seen.

    Here's your problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Uncanny_Valley
  • ....my interest in seeing this has gone down....it looked so fake, I dont see why they even need to bring him back, it is so stupid.
  • If you knew anything about the Terminator franchise, you would know he plays an important part. If this gets a sequel, it has to involve him in some way.
  • He was important in the first two, maybe, but he is not needed. There is no reason for them to make it appear that they are look like that. Why cant there be multiple models that each have a different look? The only time they would ever need to have him is if they reached the point in the story line in which they send him back in time, other then that he isnt needed. Not to mention it doesnt even look like him, the CG on his face is horrible.

It actually looked a lot better in the film. I hated the movie but I thought that Arnold looked amazing. He looks like a cartoon here. I wonder why that is.
  • It's implied in T2 and T3 that John Connor keeps the Arnold Terminator around because he was somewhat of a father figure. This is even elaborated on when Sarah is looking on at both of them playing around with eachother in T2 before they go to attack Dyson. The Arnold Terminator is a big part of the series, just as big as Kyle Reese.
  • hated this moment...as i posted before the audience went bananas. i felt so alone......

Lying to people to sell a movie really gets me angry. I saw this movie the first weekend it was released and although it wasn't complete shit, it definitely did not deliver or live up to the hype. Honestly if you want to sell tickets, just make a better fucking movie, with a better, more cohesive script. Their wasn't nearly as much action as they are trying to convince people their is in this television spot and it's a shame. The movie could of been saved if we actually cared about this future, but they didn't develop or spend enough time on John Connor or Kyle Reese. The movie was not only lacking action in my opinion but it also lacked emotional depth. The script felt rushed and the plot was all over the place. It's a shame that they had to go and ruin one of the greatest movie franchises of all time. No wonder James Cameron wouldn't get behind MCG. Hopefully if the franchise continues they will find a new director and bring the terminator franchise back to its glory days. An R rating will be a good start, plus a script where the movie does a better job of building up to a final showdown that actually means something to the viewer. Sorry for my rant I could go on...but its pointless.
  • Agreed. But not pointless.
  • Donald Duck
An R rating would've done NOTHING. Blood and cursewords do not make a better movie.
  • but the boobs would be something positive at least.....
  • They do, if done right.
  • I Dont Think McG is The problem cause the direction itself was decent...
  • When I watched the movie I really didn't mind the cameo since I knew it was coming eventually. As for WB doing this, I mean come on, didn't we know somehow they were going to market this with Arnold's image. I'm sure he knew that they were going to have this TV spot.
  • dlb
For the record: I think arnold's shoulders are bigger
  • ...
    This is weak.
That was one of my favourite parts of the movie...
The fact that they're giving this away in the TV spots is just bad.
    Shame shame Warner Bros.
    ...
  • by now, most people probably know arnold has a cameo. so showing him in a tv spot isn't such a big deal anymore.
  • Staggered
That is some of the worst CGI I've ever seen.
  • Batman Jones
And what sort of awe-inspiring CG are you used to seeing? Digital Patrick Stewart from Wolvy?
  • Mao
you wouldnt know CGI if it bit you in the ass. Assholes like you have no idea what takes to put a scene like that together. Go back to sucking down your 32oz cola and shut the fuck up.
  • Juan
Someone care to post an example of a better CGI human than this?

I thought Terminator 4 was a great addition to the franchise. I really thought it celebrated/honored the first 2 while creating a new story arc. It was cool how they explained how John Connor got those scars on is face that you see so briefly in T1. I was big fan, but I am huge fan of the franchise (w/ exception of the 3rd one)
  • Saw the german version yesterday and as a huge fan of the terminator I have to say that I liked the movie a lot. I was following the news on this right from the beginning and hoped it would be a masterpiece (like Batman begins with which Bale compared it). After seeing it, I have to admit that it isn't a masterpiece. But it really is a nice movie. And I didn't mind the lack of character development as I already know the characters. And I thought the action was perfect (although I was disappointed that the movie didn't have one big final action sequence, like in 1 and 2). And the CGI effect with Arnold I thought looked absolutely astonishing and flawless. I can't understand people saying it looked fake. I mean, obviously it's fake as we all know Arnold didn't shoot a scene for the movie. But I really couldn't find any hint that it is CGI. I was so amazed by that scene. This made me believe in the future of perfect CGI character in movies. Also the soundtrack is brilliant. It fits the movie so much. Yelchin is great. Worthington is so f****** brilliant (can't wait to see Avatar). I would watch it again. But it's true: no one really cares for this future anymore. Maybe that's why we don't think it's a masterpiece (referring to the /film newsbit about how we aren't afraid of killer machines anymore. Guess it's true.)
  • Exactly! I really can't think of any better real human CGI character ever seen on a big screen.

Old looking Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button

I saw it today and liked it very much! After all the hate I had read on the internet I was surprised it was this good. I want to see it again and that´s the best sign. It was much much better than terminator 3, a great reboot of the franshise much like Star Trek, only I liked it better than Star Trek, and will have it´s palce in my terminator collection together with the first two.

Really cool to see that tv-spot just now I have seen the movie. I wanted to see if the cgi for Arnold held up so soon after. Would have been really pissed if you guys had posted about that spot yesterday. A spoiler warning would be in place.

I agree, Oliver, that cgi Arnold looks really good, but not flawless. Even my sister said afterwards it wasn´t real and she hadn´t heard that they used cgi to recreate Arnold. It´s not easy to fool the human eye, but they still did a great job. Would have been much better if MCG had not lit the shot so much. If it had been darker with more smoke and red industrial lights flashing on Arnolds face, it would have been very hard to see that it was fake.

A few more words about the movie. I think MCG did a great job. The action was flawless. I thought it would be endless chase scenes and explosion after explosion, but it was as if MCG was holding back, in a very good way, delivering quality over quantity. Honestly Cameron couldn´t have done it better and by that I mean couldn´t have done it better for a terminator movie. I´m expecting that he will blow me away with Avatar and deliver something truly groundbreaking.

The characters were very good, even Christian Bale. don´t understand all the hate against him. He did what the role demanded of him. Worthington and Bloodgood and Yelchin were perfect. I guess I´m in the minority, not having liked Star Trek but really enjoyed Terminator.

Yeah, that was one of the worst parts of the CG in this movie... Definitely wouldn't throw it in a tv spot since it doesn't look convincing even in the brief moments it appears.
  • Maybe it looked especially fake to us because we knew before seeing this movie, Arnold was going to be CG?
  • cool... I already saw T4 twice... I want to see it again and I can't wait to own it on DVD.
  • I liked it.
  • Solid
CG ahnold reminds me of puppet ahnold from T1.
  • stan
basically it's a 3d scan of the same prop head of T1, which wasn't 100% real looking...
  • I thought the CG was awful. It also came in a time of the film that tore you away from the store. It's the same reason Hitchcock started doing the cameos in his films are early as possible.

I'm so surprised people hated this movie.
  • Dan
Yeah I'm surprised to, it open out in Austrailia yesterday so I'm seeing on staurday with my friend, I hope it good , judging by the comments on the last post not many people liked it
  • Sure it is.
