Short Circuit

Remakes, remakes, and more remakes! Dimension Films has hired a new writer for the Short Circuit remake they announced last April. The original screenwriters/creators S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock had been hired to pen the remake, but apparently the Weinstein’s want to go in another direction with screenwriter Dan Milano. Before you write this one off completely, let me tell you a bit about the new screenwriter.

Milano is a writer on the Adult Swim television show Robot Chicken, and the creator of Greg the Bunny. Milano first watched the original film while he was in high school, and now wants to update the concept, “taking advantage of the improvements in robotics” of the last two decades. But the producers insist that Johnny 5’s signature look won’t change drastically from the original movie. So at least we don’t have to worry about stupid looking computer generated advance shape-shifting robot…

The  popular 1986 John Badham sci-fi adventure comedy told the story of a military robot who runs away from the government after developing a conscience and a personality, the result of being hit by lightning.

  • Not gonna lie, thought it as a Wall-E post for a split second.
  • Every day, there's a G*ddamn remake.

Do you think the fanboys are being too quiet about it? I haven't seen a youtube video or web sensation making fun of remakes. I would think it would be a bigger issue but I guess not.
  • It probably has something to do with the fact that, more often than not, the remake has been worth the trouble and an enjoyable film... sad but true. I mean, we keep going to cinemas. They keep making money from remakes... so they keep remaking stuff. Simple. Try and stop a fanboy from seeing the new Star Trek, though (for example). Never going to happen.
  • Just when you think things might start calming down and the remake trend might dissipate, they bombard the schedule with another batch of pointless reboots. Sad thing is, the majority actually make profit.
  • frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt

i think we should literally shoot the people in hollywood that think making all these remakes pleases people. they might be good but mostly they are ok. they are never great films so why bother with them. they are just taking up the place of the great films that could be made with that money.
  • Yeah, let's literally shoot them -- that's a rational thought.
  • Literally shoot them...with LOVE!!!
  • ugh.
  • I like that people are upset about remakes unless there's someone involved (writer/director) that they like. THEN it's fine to be unoriginal, I guess.
  • Truth. But if you look at it another way, having a director one trusts at the helm makes it seem more likely that a remake will live up to or surpass it's predecessor. I think that's a big part of it too.
  • But the complaints about remakes/reboots are never "this won't be good", it's usually a snap unilateral bit of certainty that it won't be good and the loudest cries are related to "where are all the original ideas?" (you have to imagine that latter quote with several misspellings, excessive exclamation points, and salty language, as everyone who asks that question generally has no time for spelling, grammar, or tact).
  • Well you're right there. The main criticism is usually unoriginality, and as you say, it's not a very legitimate complaint if you don't say the same about writer/directors you like.
  • That's totally the reason why I'm on board for Darren Aronofsky's Robocop.

Edit: Edited to not sound like I was hating on Aronofsky's Robocop. Because I'm stoked for that film.

The day they remake Top Gun or Rocky is the day I kill someone.
  • right now, the first three articles on the home page look like a blast from the 80's. Short Circuit, Predator, and The Warriors...LOL where has all the originality gone???
  • I REALLY want a remake of the Star Wars prequels by a respectable director.
    Now that would be awesome.
  • I've drawn the line here, folks. Fuck this noise.
  • When I reach middle-age, every film, television show, book, video game I will have grown up on will be remade and re-sold to me... in some cases for the second or third time after the original product was created.

This is insane. What's next? Mac and Me? Howard the Duck? Why don't we just remake Willow and put all the little people from those TLC reality shows in it?

I know exactly how this happened. Transformers and Wall-E came out and jump-started the robots craze again, and someone noticed that Wall-E and Johnny Five look similar and decided Wall-E's success MUST be based on people's subconscious yearning for a Short Circuit remake...

    Jesus. Save Us.
  • A remake of Mac and Me could only improve that Crapfest
  • I'm with the remake here. I saw this movie when I was younger too and I loved the hell out of it, this and part 2 (still looking for small versions of Johnny 5), I bought the Blu-Ray not too long ago and Holy Christ in Heaven, I never knew there were strings involved! The strings are completely obvious in the Hi-def version of this, so are the studio set pieces! I think this should be remade only so this generation of kids can look on Johnny 5 as a cool thing and not some 80's thing that they don't respect like we do.
  • I purchased the first film on DVD recently and was kind of saddened that you can see the strings, it was such a magical movie to me when I was a kid and now it looks so....cheap. Still love it for sentimental reasons though.

I guess I'm okay with this remake, I'm glad they aren't changing the design drastically.
  • Frankly a KOTOR trilogy would be better.
  • Joe
I wonder if Kristinia Debarge is going to sing the theme song. Then they also remake a song too.
  • i'll only go if the robot watches a scene from "Wall-E" and wonders if it's his twin.
  • Who Ha
    Steve Guttenberg is ALIVE!
  • evanz
When they decide to remake Muppets movies using CGI, then we have a real problem.
  • movielover
love the original films. I was wondering when news of the remake was going to happen. I last heard some things a few months ago/last yr. Though i do hope the original writers are still on board with the project is some form. I wonder what happened with their script?
  • STOP THE BLOODY REMAKES .... GOD DAMM IT ...

    Get an original thought.

The worst one is the fact that I heard they want to remake Slap shot .. is nothing sacred
  • Johnny Boy
There is no such thing as originality in movies. Every movie is based off of something else in some way. Movies require them to take from other sources because the film medium is just that way... Film as an art is based on ALL other art before it... and includes everything - music, photography, story telling, etc. There's basically nothing left to be original... So get use to remakes cause it's not going anywhere. In fact, there will be even more remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, and other variations of existing stories.
  • So now Johnny 5 is gonna be humping washing machines?
  • Charly
It'll look like WALL-E 2 cose many people people won't even remember Short Circuit but WALL-e, yes, they will...
  • Johnny Boy
They should remake ALL of the Star Wars movies and George Lucas should have absolutely nothing to do with the reboot. Yes, remake episodes 4-6 also... but more importantly Episodes 1-3.

Other movies that MUST be remade: Every single Michael Bay film
  • Name
Also: Every single Uwe Boll film. Many of the concepts had great potential . . . which was then sucked out of it with a huge hypodermic needle and sprayed down the toilet, only to be replaced by the contents of Boll's lower intestine. IMHO.
  • Marko
So wait. They're getting a manatee to write this?
