First Look: Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex

hex_on_set

Our first look at Josh Brolin in his Jonah Hex costume, not to mention make-up, has appeared on the Lainey Gossip blog. The main thrust of their story is some rather un-/Filmy jibber jabber about Brolin’s private life, but they decided to illustrate it with some Jonah Hex paparazzi shots from this last weekend’s shooting. Sample all three of the Brolin images after the jump, and don’t forget that there’s already been some snaps of Megan Fox in her rather… er… overt costume.

There’s such a tangled wodge of backstory necessary to explain the scarring on Hex’s face that I won’t wade into that now.

Jonah Hex is being directed by Jimmy Hayward, making his live-action debut after co-directing Horton Hears a Who. Apparently, he’s a real dead ringer for Empire Magazine’s Chris Hewitt. There was much attention paid to Hayward’s history in animation when it was announced he was taking up this project, and it seemed many were sceptical about his ability to shift gears.

Brolin has taken a very hands on role with this picture, it would seem. He was quite vocal in attacking it when screenwriters Neveldine and Taylor were also attached to direct, then he appeard to be instrumental in both the hiring of Jimmy Hayward and John Malkovich, cast as the villain Quentin Turnbull. At least we know who to blame if the film turns out to be a total turkey.

Amongst the changes from the Neveldine and Taylor screenplay that I am expecting are some curbing of the bawdy dialogue (”don’t forget to get your dick wet, soldier”); the requirement for Leila, Megan Fox’s character to appear naked; and several extreme stylistic conceits (a glob of spit hitting the ground in extreme slow-motion, “EXTREME CLOSEUP: 10,1000 frames per second, FILLING the SCREEN, detonating massively on a micro scale”).

The scar in these pictures is somewhat less extreme than the one described in the screenplay too:

The right side of his mug is HORRIBLY SCARRED… a rope of dermis it could only have been melted and healed - connects the top lip to the chin, stretched taut over snarling teeth like a leather strap.

Sounds rather more Two-Facey, doesn’t it?

  • The makeup looks really weak.
  • nelson
yeah because they don't touch it up in post production LOLOL
  • to be honest, you can't tell because you can't really see it from those pics.
  • brolin in a movie with megan fox? i just don't see it.
  • Not really too interested in this project and after seeing this rather weak facial scarring I'm even less interested.

Why did they feel the need to reduce the gruesome face the Hex sports in the books? Yet another lame attempt to tone down a key feature in a comic book character adaptation.

boring. If anyone cares image search Jonah Hex to see what he should look like.
  • To be far these are set photo's we don't know what it will look like in the correct lighting nor do we know if they will be adding visual effects in post production. Aaron Eckhart's Two-Face set photo's don't look impressive at all compaired to the way it looks on film.
  • It does look pretty toned down but "in costume" is not the same as "in character". I wouldn't make too hasty a judgment based on these pictures alone.
  • Asking the internet to use sound judgment is like asking Napoleon not to be short...

Besides that, I completely agree with you. I think this make-up, compared to a complete faithful rendering of the comic artwork, better suits the live-action Jonah Hex .
  • Meh.

Is it just me or Josh Brolin looks like a miniature action figure in the picture that he´s not wearing the long coat? Maybe it´s the way his clothes are fitting. But before I read the post, I thoguht it was acout some Jonah Hex model from Hot Toys or something.
  • The
Yah.. I thought at first they were fake or something. Weird lighting or his makeup gives him a chalky feel like a minature-ette.
  • Dillon
    he looks like Robert Redford
  • Brian Rodden
Why can't I connect to facebook and post??? Also, I thought the makeup (scarring) would be much more extreme than this...

    EXTREMEM CHEDDAR, WAHOOOOOOOOOO!
  • "Amongst the changes from the Neveldine and Taylor screenplay that I am expecting are some curbing of the bawdy dialogue (”don’t forget to get your dick wet, soldier”); the requirement for Leila, Megan Fox’s character to appear naked; and several extreme stylistic conceits (a glob of spit hitting the ground in extreme slow-motion, “EXTREME CLOSEUP: 10,1000 frames per second, FILLING the SCREEN, detonating massively on a micro scale”)."

    Amen.
  • i think the thomas jane photo that came out a while back with him decked out looking like hex was better
  • that was a professional shoot with a close up.
  • Keep judging a bad quality paparazzi shot.

    Makes total sense...

WOW! I'm more eager to see Josh Brolin pull off this Hex character. I thought he would be more scarred up too, but they're not in post-production yet. Timing of the release of these photos is a very smart PR move on Brolin's part - he's been getting some really nasty press since last week about his alleged infidelity affair in New Orleans. I hope we get to see more Hex photos....
  • Pretty
    LOL., really 'BIGLION'
"spit" at extreme close-up...God do not want to see that. OK the 'Leila' character aka Megan Fox is expected to get naked with Brolin's character Hex. One of the reasons Megan got the role is because she's AoK with nudity. Jonah Hex sounds like a western, civil war-era version of SIN CITY, but much more violent.
  • thanxxx friend

i love it . jonas hex is based on a gritty western tale based on a DC comic im looking forward to seeing it .
