First Look: DreamWorks Animation’s Oobermind

oobermind

AICN have posted a batch of new promotional images and posters from the Licensing Show in Las Vegas, including a promotional poster for Spider-Man 4, a generic Iron Man 2 character banner and a poster featuring Shrek and Donkey for Shrek Forever After.

But the thing that caught my attention was the first promotional art for DreamWorks Animation’s Oobermind. Maybe just because we havent seen any of these character designs before. This is the superhero project being produced by Ben Stiller, formerly titled Master Mind. I’ve cleaned up some of the images and posted them after the jump. Head on over to AICN to see the promotional art in higher resolution.

Written by Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, Oobermind is a satirical take on superhero movies (think The Incredibles). When super villain Oobermind (Robert Downey Jr) defeats his arch-rival Metro Man, the world should be his oyster. But instead, Oobermind falls into total despair. It turns out that life without a rival is life without a point for him. So he creates a new superhero rival. Unfortunately, the new hero wants to be a super villain too. Who can we turn to? Who has what it takes to stand up to this menace? Who will defend the innocent? Oobermind! That’s who.  Tina Fey also provides her voice for the film. Oobermind is scheduled to hit theaters on November 5th 2010.

  • Ants
    eyebrows...I can't believe this....
  • "think the Incredibles" only not as cool.
  • Simmy25
I'm actually "thinking monsters vs aliens"
  • Ted
do they have no original ideas.....when are we going to see their old man movie
  • It's in production, believe me, they're getting it ready along with their "small, cute, meddlesome robot that saves the earth" and the one with the talking toys.
  • Tony Stark as a villain? Sounds like the Marvel universe from the last few years...
  • Charly
Looks like Monsters Vs Aliens ...
  • Weyland_Yutani
Dreamworks Animation must have the copycat thing written into their mission statement. It doesn't automatically make this idea terrible, but it sounds very familiar for a reason.

Panda was an attempt to try something of their own and it was pretty successful. Lesson?
  • Weyland_Yutani
...and one more thing, because it's bugging me. I'm guessing this is just an early mock up, but did they just take the same actress that played Ginormica and give her different hair? Has it come to this?
  • tobor68
    wow.

with all the money dreamworks has, you'd think they could hire someone with a sense of composition.
  • Mr G
Anyone else notice the World Trade Center in the Spiderman 4 poster?
  • Ryan T
Yea just noticed it in the back there....weird.
  • looks cool to me...
  • Mola Rambo
Why is it spelled 'Oober'? Do Americans fear umlauts?
  • Oobermind sounds stupid, maybe it will turn out better than ti sounds doubt it though. At least their smart enough not to try to compete with Pixar at the box office.
  • ShoroBeCon
When has Pixar beat Dreamworks at the boxoffice?
  • Simmy25
uhm, everytime? with the exception of shrek of course
  • Alex
Does it matter? Pixar doesn't have to beat DreamWorks at the box office. Everyone knows that Pixar's output is far superior to DreamWorks'. The Oscars do all the talking.
  • ----
    The Oscars are a joke.
  • Guest
DreamWorks FREQUENTLY beats Pixar at the box office.

    You're such a fanboy.

And not to try to compete at the box office? DreamWorks' films are routinely in the top 10 films of the year at the BO. I'd say they compete.

    Douche.
  • Why is everybody so down on Oobermind? I think it sounds like a pretty cool concept.
  • Mike
Not digging these character designs. The villain extremely resembles Gallaxhar from "Monsters v. Aliens." I mean, at least make him a different color, or SOMETHING.
  • MikeJonesMikeJones
    Well it's all DreamWorks ;)
  • B2B
"think The Incredibles"? How can one say or think this movie is similar Pixar's flick based on a teaser poster? This is lame reporting designed to cleanly flame the the Pixar fanboys!
  • Simmy25
you know, this phrase actually came from the original dreamworks announcement
  • greycolumbus
    Capes. That is all.
  • ShoroBeCon
Actually, that's not even close to being true. Why don't go check your statistics again.
  • Simmy25
  • The spider man 4 teaser poster is promisingly good. After the third failure.
  • Twin Towers? You mean those two buildings that look like they're holding up a bridge?
  • JavaJunkie
This is the country where the 90's Michael J. Fox film "The Concierge" had to be re-titled "For Love or Money"... (Not that it really mattered in the end)
  • Bob
And it is the country where "The Madness of George III" had to be retitled "The Madness of King George" because they thought Americans would think that they had missed the first two "Madness of George" films and of course it is where "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" had to be changed to "...Soceror's Stone" because they thought that a child would not want to read a book with the word "philosopher" in the title.

On the plus side though, it is the country that gave us Frasier; that outweighs a lot of bad things.
  • The concept is pretty funny. I don't see how it's like the Incredibles. There's no family involved, nothing other then the inner turmoil of losing your nemesis, that's it. It's like what if Joker killed Batman on accident or something. Either way the designs look very uninspired. Like someone mentioned it looks a lot like the Monsters vs. Aliens designs from the Galaxhar villain to the Ginormica girl. Even Metro Man (if that's him in the pic) looks like the President of the United States from MvsA.
  • Andrew
Don't be so harsh on Oobermind just yet. I mean, c'mon- Robert Downey Jr. and Tina Fey in a movie together should set the world ablaze with awesomeness!! At least, it would for me...
  • that Spider man 4 poster is awfully done.
    God Damn
  • The_Kid
I like the idea of Oobermind, the fact that RDJ is providing
The voice of the main character, who I'm guessing is going to be a smartass. I'm stoked for the film.u
  • Alon
It's a completely different concept then the Incredibles. Get your face out of Pixar's ass. The protaginist is the super-villain. It's a fresh idea, just like Monsters vs. Aliens was.
  • Doesn't anyone else get the Venture Bros. vibe off of this whole project? I mean, ignoring the fact that this is another example of Dreamworks stepping in a pre-made footprint, but the idea of a villain being lost without a nemesis is the entire plot of the second season of Venture Bros. when The Monarch has defeated Dr. Venture. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
  • Nick
uhhhhhhhhh No one should be comparing pixar with Dreamworks. Thats not the issue. The issue is that this looks like M V A. To the "T." The designs could be different and tell the same story. I agree with the comment about Kung Foo Panda. It was so successful and the designs were pretty nice. The whole watered down human thing really isn't very appealing.
