Taraji P. Henson has been cast in the Will Smith-produced reimagining of The Karate Kid. Henson, who was nominated for an Oscar for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, will play Jaden Smith’s character Dre’s mother Sherry.

Forced to relocate to China to keep her job, Dre finds it hard to fit in and gets in an altercation at his school. Jackie Chan plays the Mr. Myiagi character, renamed Mr. Han , who agrees to teach Dre martial arts in order to defend against the students of Li Quan Ha’s Fighting Dragon School of Kung-Fu.

The original film befitted from an A-level acting. Pat Morita’s performance in the first Karate Kid was good enough to earn him an Oscar Nomination. Does an Oscar-nominated actress give this remake any credibility? As long as the film is still titled “The Karate Kid”, I vote “No.”

  • is there anything else to say other than WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I think it almost gives it less credibility.
  • HarveyG
Wasn't this film due to be called 'The Kung Fu Kid'? - not that it makes it any better.... In short, just because there is an Oscar nominated actress attached to this does in no way make it credible. This remake is adding to the ever growing pile of crappy remakes and this one will bomb and rape the memory of what was a great childhood film, so sad.

Can Razzies be awarded before a film is even made?!
  • As of right now the movie is being released/marketed as "The Karate Kid" which doesn't even make any sense since the kid doesn't learn Karate in the film...
  • Do you think Asians will be offended by this? This is 2009; people aren't that stupid to think that the Chinese and the Japanese are THE SAME. Some people might get them confused but even the average American wouldn't go that far.

I'm Asian, and I don't care if a dude like John Cho gets cast as Sulu or whatever. But I do care if Hollywood is implying a very ignorant message by keeping the Karate Kid title when it's a China-based movie. That's just me. Maybe I'm sensitive.
  • Hilary Swank, two times best actress winner stars in The Next Karate Kid, alas it doesnt fare any better.
  • That was BEFORE she was a two-time Best Actress Winner... big difference.
  • filmkid
why cant they just call the movie something else not "The Karate Kid" this movie will fail big time and having an Oscar nominated actress in the movie does not mean this movie will be good.
  • Solid
Chan did great with the old mentor role in forbidden kingdom... that's all I got folks. This will be shitty. shrugs..
  • Honestly there best bet is to just change the name altogether make it more of a spiritual succesor or something to it. Since from what I have read its WAY to different to even be a reboot or remake.
  • Is this the movie that will put Jackie Chan on the map as a serious actor or will he perform his stunts through the movie?

Why does this movie have such a fuzz about it. Karate Kid was not a great movie. It was boring and the only thing that made this movie great is the nostaliga when you watch it today.

Why can´t they make this into a movie about a young boy who wants to be a Wrestler and is taken under the protective wings of Mikey Rourke. Call it Wrestler Kid instead.

It dosen´t matter if there are any Oscar nominated actors in the movie it will not be good anyway.
  • I fail to see what meaningful impact the title can have on the quality of the film. What am I missing?
  • Van Damme might have dune a dumb thing when he turned down The Expendables, but at least he was smart enough to turn down this shit too.
  • Van Damme might have done a dumb thing when he turned down The Expendables, but at least he was smart enough to turn down this shit too.

Did Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr, add any credibility to Snow Dogs or Daddy Day Care?
  • She was in that Chris Rock president movie and Smokin' Aces. I figure she'll find her way.
  • stz
    No.
  • BobbyBuShay
Who cares if she is in the film or not. The fact they want to take an Awesome classic an remake it, simply sucks. Its way to soon to make, The Karate Kid a remake. Also, my next comment, everyone get over yourselves I'm not racist, my ex-girlfriend is black. Why, are they pushing so many remakes to mostly all black actors. Come on stop trying to prove a point to everyone.
  • C'mon, Hillary Swank has won 2 Oscars and she was... THE NEXT KARATE KID! She single handedly saved that franchise.
  • I don't understand why everyone is shitting so hard on this remake; I say kudos to the studios for trying something a little different.

And in regards to credibility? Did I miss something, did the original Karate Kid win best picture in '84? And why is everyone so angry that they cast a black kid? Christ, they named him Dre! That is awesome.

The question I want to ask is "Does Slashfilm lose credibility by continually bitching on and on about The Karate Kid Remake?" Ease up!
  • Brian
How is the studio trying something 'different' with another remake? Answer: They are not, shit's played.
  • you just contradicted yourself when you said that.
  • you just contradicted yourself when you said that, GlenJM.
  • Did it get nominated for Best Picture? no... but Pat Morita got a best supporting actor nomination for his work in the movie...
  • Johnny Boy
somehow it has become the trend to bitch about remakes... even when some kids have never seen the awesome original, they'll bitch about the remake. It's stupid, but true. Remakes have been around since the beginning of film and will continue. So what's with all the complaints about the film's credibility, and lack of originality in Hollywood, and blah blah blah... It's not like "original" Hollywood films are any better. And what's with your argument that the credibility being lost if the film is titled "The Karate Kid"??? That's even more lame.

Bottom line is this: If it's a great story and well made, then the remake will be as good or maybe better. If it's not well made, it does absolutely nothing to the original other than making it look even better. And either way regardless of whether or not the remake is better or worse than the original is mostly opinion... so STFU and stop bitching about credibility, especially before seeing the film. Jeez.

I dont have anything against this kid other than he is a kid, still think the film shouldn't be made until he is around 16 years old. There will be zero emotional impact of this film as Jaden is just to young. The original was brilliant in the fact the story also centered aoround him turning from a teenager into a young adult by the careful mentoring of the late great "Pat Morita" learning his life lessons about hardship, love, dating, responsibility.

It will just not be the same with the character so much younger. This will be a sham, I dare say Karate Kid lite.

I guess as long as the target audience is pre-teens then you are solid, but I wont see it myself.
  • I loved her in Benjamin Button and Hustle & Flow, but she's not the type of actress that has managed to avoid crap before, so I don't think her involvement suddenly means the movie will be better. Mostly, I'm just disappointed that she's wasting her time on this.
  • This is self indulgent crap. Nobody can give it credibility.
  • Branden
Taraji, NO! Don't do it, girl! I love her.

I thought that the name of the movie was changed to "The Kung Fu Kid".

It's still going to suck big donkey balls. Jaden is still in the movie. He will fuck it up.
  • Answer: HELL TO THE NO!!!!

But if they changed the title to THE KUNG FU KID, then I see no problem with the reboot.
  • Please explain why changing the title is of any consequence. The film is going to be good or bad independent of the title.
  • I have mixed feelings on reboots/remakes. I can see why Hollywood would want to do a Karate Kid reboot, part of me wants them to leave it alone and leave the films be, but I understand that it's all about money and introducing a new generation to the original franchise AND the reboot.

I just think that "The Kung Fu Kid" would be better name, because the title will clearly indicate that this is a REBOOT, not a remake. I don't want to see two results for "The Karate Kid" on IMDB.
  • "Forced to relocate to China to keep her job, Dre finds it hard to fit in and gets in an altercation at his school."
that sounds a lot like some of the plot to fast and the furious: tokyo drift, just replace racing cars with martial arts fighting.
  • Did Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry give 'Catwoman' any credibility? Yes?

    Oh...no.
  • Did an Oscar winning actor give any credibility to "Boat Trip"...
  • MarkTheseWords
    answer = no

what a joke of a movie, and shes over rated to begin with.
  • I think "credibility" is the wrong word... implies the movie is just a rumor (I wish it was).

The better question would be "Does an Oscar-nominated Actress Make The Karate Kid Remake Suck LESS?"
  • God, you guys are pissy about this movie.
  • Palmer
No, no it doesn't. I hope by the time this film is done it will no longer be called "The Karate Kid."
  • Will Smith = self-indulgent junk. No one has realized this yet?
  • Justin Craig
Nope and it destroys her credibility too.
  • cGulley
i dont think Jackie Chan knows what he is getting himslef into with will smith and his son.
i think this movie is gonna be more drama and depressing than anything else.

$20 bucks says the kids mom will have a drinking problem or something like that !!!
  • billherbert
look mr miagi is dead and ralph macchio is getting fucken old.i think its a awesome idea.
its no difference than redoing a rambo movie 4 times
  • RantingReviews
