Arnold Schwarzenegger Offered Role in Predators?

Predator

As you know, Robert Rodriguez is producing a reboot of the Predator movie franchise titled Predators for 20th Century Fox.  Moviehole has learned that Rodriguez has reached out to Arnold Schwarzenegger to be part of the movie, but the Governator has yet to respond.

But how could Arnold be involved if the film is a complete reboot? Well… apparently the movie might not be a complete reboot after all.

One of the sources claims that Rodriguez has written Schwarzenegger’s character Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer into the story in a way that the movie would reboot the franchise, but still function as a quasi-sequel. Think Star Trek. He wouldn’t be the lead character, or even a huge role, but be part of the film’s main storyline.

But will Arnold come back, even if it was only for a few days on the set? Schwarzenegger turned down an offer to appear in Stephen Hopkins’ Predator 2, and the cameo was rewritten and given to Gary Busey. So why would be be interested in returning now? Apparently the Alex Litvak ’s script, which is loosely adapted from Rodriguez’s original Predators treatment, is “terrific” and every much as violent as the original, which should calm some fans.

I’m not sure I really like the age of the sequel/reboot. I feel like if you’re going to reboot an idea, why not completely reimagine it? Why be bound to prior canon?

And if you’re going to bring the main character back, why not have his role be something significant? Why not just make the film a full-on sequel? I understand people want to see Arnold again, but I don’t think he really needs to return. And if he does return, I’d rather it be something more than a rushed extended cameo.

I know people are going to bring up Star Trek as an example, but let me remind you that 20th Century Fox didn’t produce Star Trek.

Why doesn't Rodriguez just CGI him in the Film? Salvation style?

Chances are they probably will, I'm sure this is just their first approach before they need to make that decision..... my guess is he'll say no. Knowing this film will suck anyhow.

If Arnold is back, I don't care whether it's a remake/sequel/reboot/bad/etc. As long as he's back pumping out quotes.

It's bad enough they're remaking a movie that's barely 20 years old (Total Recall).
  • it would be cool if he was in it but no cgi please.

I for one am happy with this news, not so much as Arnold returning, albeit a nice touch, but the fact that it's just a starting over point, but not a remake. Horror and Sci-fi franchises don't really need to have remakes, as I'm sure we've all witnessed how those go over. Those type of films have their ups and downs, but people still come and still want to see it. The Friday the 13th remake could have easily been just another installment with a few minor changes and no one would have cared. Hell, they came to see Freddy Vs. Jason after Jason X came out. I think the prime example of this is the Bond franchise. This trend of remakes has got to stop or we're going to find ourselves in some rather unfriendly territory when they get to the beloved and honored classics of yesterday like Citizen Kane. It's up to us movie lovers to find the strength to just not go to remakes.

This actually makes me a little excited.
  • FYI: Arnold will be finished with his governator duties in January 2010. He has left open the possibility of appearing in films after that.

I'm not sure when this movie is planning on being filmed, but it would have to be after January of 2010 if they want anything larger than a cameo.
  • i think they should skip ahnold and give the cameo to gary buseys character. yes, i know he died - they could just say that the predator that tussled with him grabbed a sample of his dna and now he fights with the preds as one of their own - im sure he wouldnt have to do much training for the role seeing as how hes batshit crazy.
  • Approaching Arnold proves two things - they understand what fans want, and they don't have complete faith in their 'reboot'... unless, of course, it is 'just' a sequel of sorts. Arg, this could get confusing.
  • The fact that they're making a reboot proves they DON'T understand what fans want.

Nah, I prefer they adhere to some canon (ala Star Trek) then just COMPLETELY reboot everything.
  • Is he still running that joke of a state? Please tell me, if he is, that he has better things to do with his time.
  • Awesome, is he going to be in the Total Recall remake?

I'm just glad this whole sequel/reboot thing wasn't all the rage back in the 80's.

Otherwise, Arnold would've done battle with the Creature From The Black Lagoon. (You know, as opposed to an original property that still generates sequel news 20 years later.)

Predator with Arnold was classic and doesnt need him in this new film. His predator was for that time just like Danny Glover. This new film if a sequel then we need a new face and if Arnold has a cameo as Dutch then im cool with that. This means it still is following the story from the first film but must have mentioning of Danny Glover char and AVP series.
  • Seriously, Arnold needs to come back to films. Who else is going to cover our cheesy quasi 80's action reboot/prequels? Shee, Stallone? He is just a second rate Arnold, I want the real one! :)

I want to call to attention the fact that, something has gone horribly wrong over there in America!!!
People seemed to have lost their passion for originality and are simply recycling past successes to "earn" that extra buck and keep their head above the "public line of sight" waters.
You guys aren't EARNING anything!!! You're what Ayn Rand called "Moochers" and "Looters" in her book "Atlas Shrugged", and it seems to me that remakes and reboots are getting a hell of a lot more attention on film sights than actual original productions, thus feeding a certain public need to revisit past emotions and feelings we experienced while watching movies like "Terminator" or "The Warriors". The reason for adding a movie to a franchise is to move it FORWARD and not keep it stuck in place. Would you really like to revisit another time travel story line in "Terminator" with Arnold, or do you want see this franchise go to a new exciting level?!
I haven't seen Mcg's movie yet but I gathered from reviews that people wanted another repeat on past story lines, which kinda makes me sad. MOVE ON!! The past IS THE PAST!! no sense reliving it over and over...
All you're doing is copying other peoples' work. You're not contributing anything to it...You're simply put - Copy Cats.

in the future, there will be only three movies, and they will be remade every four months, with younger and younger cast members.

terminaytaings: begginage starring seth rogen the third as kyle reese, dakota fanning efron as old lady connor, and sony's fobo medical robot covered in a life cast of arnold schwarzenegger as the terminayta

Why does Predator need a reboot at all? Why not just Predator 3? 1 and 2 were awesome as everyone knows and AvP is a separate franchise completely so why not just make a kick ass Predator 3?
  • Lawdog
    GET TO DA REBOOT!
  • If he does agree to take part, I hope it's better conceived that his "role" in 'Terminator Salvation.' That was just pointless and ripped you out of the story you were supposed to be following.
  • I would also like to see them bring back Danny Glover. YES Im serious. He was really good in Predator 2. Predator does NOT need a reboot. SEQUAL only! NO reason to ignore the first two films.

  • Fox may not have produced Star Trek, but Abrams is no Rodriguez.
