stretch armstrong movie

Back in February, we told you that Steve Oedekerk was developing a big screen adaptation of Stretch Armstrong as part of Universal’s deal with Hasbro to turn board games and toys into a series of possibly horrible probably pointless movies. Well it appears the film is going into production, and even has a release date - April 15, 2011. Ugh.

Academy Award winning producer Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster) has come on board to produce the project. Grazer issued the following statement: “Stretch Armstrong is a character I have wanted to see on screen for a long time. He’s an unconventional kind of super hero with a power that no one would want. It’s a story about a guy stretching - if you will - the limits of what is possible to become all that he can be.”

Kenner released the toy in 1976, a 13-inch blond-haired muscled action figure whose limbs could be stretched to nearly four feet. The plan is to start over and develop a superhero comedy out of the property, which to me doesn’t seem much different in concept from Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four or Elastigirl from The Incredibles. Disney even tried and failed to make a film based on the property in the late 90’s with Danny DeVito and later Jackie Chan attached.

I’m not saying that a Stretch Armstrong movie couldn’t be good (logical thinking would lead you in that direction) but Oedekerk is a pretty mediocre writer, at best. His filmography is filled with some bad to horrible films, including: The Nutty Professor, Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls, Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, Bruce Almighty and the sequel Evan Almighty. That said, Brian Grazer has a great track record, and his involvement might elevate this to something more. One thing is for sure, Universal and Hasbro are somehow luring big talent to these board game and toy properties.

Universal Pictures and Hasbro, Inc. formed the partnership in 2008 to produce at least four motion pictures based on some of the world’s best-known and beloved brands. Currently in development are Monopoly, with Ridley Scott set to produce and direct and Pamela Pettler writing the screenplay; Candyland, with Kevin Lima to direct based on a script from Etan Cohen; Clue, with Gore Verbinski to produce and direct; Ouija, with Michal Bay to produce; and Battleship, with Peter Berg to direct from a screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber.

" It’s a story about a guy stretching - if you will - the limits of what is possible to become all that he can be.”

You can dress it up all you want, but Hasbro now owns your soul.
  • okayyyyy.... so um... is anyone here even excited about this?
  • No.
  • I am, if only for the chance that it might give Oedekerk the chance to make a sequel to Kung Pow. Consider my fingers crossed. That said, this movie will probably suck.

I would say the same if anyone else would be doing it, but with Odenkirk you know its going to be rediculous and stupid. Sounds like a good movie to me!
  • lord have mercy.

I used to not care so much about hollywood making movies about old shows and what not from my childhood but now it's just getting ridiculous. I cannot wait until this fad is over. We need a return to original movies!

Maybe it's my dirty mind, but at first glance I though this was a movie about rubber dildos...
  • indeed you do have a dirty mind ;-)

Well we are, in fact, getting screwed.
  • If done right, a board game can make a great movie, take Clue for instance. Candy Land could be a great children movie. Or even Pokemon, while not my cup of tea, is a hugely popular animated series with many movies, all based on a card game. Some games don't translate into a movie as easily. There isn't really a story to Battleship, so unless you are just making a generic WWII movie, it'll probably be stupid. Same for Monopoly, unless that's the new name for Wall Street 2, it'll probably suck...

Now, making Jumangi a trilogy by including the game of Life could be hilarious. Spin the wheel, draw the card, and suddenly they are pregnant...
  • *SPOLERS AHEAD*

My friend Brian Grazer told me how the movie is going to end:

His armpits tear open and all the insides pour out of them and then my mom has to throw it away because she found me eating the stuff oozing out of the armpits.

    *END SPOILERS*
  • now that's something I want to watch.

Make it stop, please make it stop!
  • Doc
It's not a film, but instead, a 2 hour toy commercial. That's really what this deal with Hasbro is all about.

Is there a petition I can sign to STOP THIS MOVIE FROM GETTING MADE? Or at least have it never reach my city?
  • shameless
i wouldnt have as much of a problem with the movies if the titles werent so damn lame.
  • How are they going to STRETCH this out to feature length. Zing.
  • honestly i think this is a perfect project for someone like steve. I can see him having fun with the concept. it's right up his alley.
  • Let it be known that I had one of these Stretch Armstrongs when I was a kid, well the thing ripped and the glue inside seeped all over the carpet. Thanks to that I got one of the worst beatings of my life at the hands of my mother. I'll watch this movie in the fetal position.
  • Goobity
That story might make a better movie. :|

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your story mate, but its one I won't soon forget.

Yeah that is a brilliant idea for a move, a possessed Stretch purposely causes mayhem in the strict religious house of one Jacob Slant. Crockery is broken, Mum's underwear is shredded, and the Bible is put somewhere unmentionable. beating after beating, by either the hand, the belt and after Fathers pornography is pasted onto his car with some stubborn translucent glue Jacob recieves the belt. Then Jacob learns "Don't get mad.....Get Stretchy"
  • *punches face over and over
  • drbendy
Oh fuck i put belt twice, looks like it's suicide for me.

David Carradine was filming a movie titled "Stretch" when he was found dead in a Bangcock hotel suite. Is this the same movie?

This Article is full of Cow flop; I mean I believe some of they could be made into pretty good movies under the right person hand. But no studio is going to start wrangling stars to a multitude of projects; An put themselves out on a limb on unproven grounds.

So do not expect to see these all released or even produced in the same year if ever. Hollywood is not in the business to just make a movie to do so they actually want to get what they spend back plus more.

An face it Hollywood knows that there viewers our hard up with cash and they will only spend on those movies that actually has some drive. So if you think they can make money on a board game based movie at the moment. I think your a idoit but that just me!!!!!
  • hey hey
i want to get the toy my mom said it was cool and that the movie will be a commedy for kids or old people
  • hey hey
