Avatar Power Suit On Display at E3

avatar suit
Last week an image leaked out of a 14-foot tall powersuit from James Cameron’s upcoming 3D sci-fi epic Avatar. At the time I wondered why 20th Century Fox didn’t send their legal team after all the sites that posted it. Heck, it seemed to be a confirmed set photo. Not the case at all. While the powersuit is a confirmed prop from the movie, the photo wasn’t taken on the set. So where was it taken? Probably on route to the E3 video game convention in Los Angeles. Our friends at Collider were able to snap a few photos of this monster mech suit on the show floor. I have included one after the jump.

These 14-feet tall Powersuits, called Heavy loaders, (potential spoilers) “are worn by human troopers on the surface of alien planet Pandora. One sequence is going to show a group of Powersuited troopers, led by Matt Gerald’s Corporal Lyle Waynefleet, laying waste to a Na’vi village, torching it with flamethrowers and even causing civilian casualties.”

The suits look fucking insane. If these photos don’t get you excited about this movie, I don’t know what will. Head on over to Collider to see more images.

    Oh, I'm excited alright!
  • Infrafan.
I like it, but I can't help but think of the APUs from The Matrix Trilogy. Still cool though.
  • There are some shots from the avatar video game released that show off the aliens.

  • Why the downvotes? Is it not kinda the first look at the one of the most anticipated parts of the film?
  • shameless
peter, i havn't seen you use any profanity untill now. however, i fully endorse its usage because those suits look fucking awesome!
  • Sounds like we're going to see these things wreaking some major effing havoc. Yay! xD

Could you imagine rolling up to the DMV in one of those babies (ammo belts hanging), getting out to inquire, with a serious tone, about registration and some new plates? I'd totally do it.
  • starscream9289
"Sir, have you filled up form twenty....."
    *looks up*
"Yes sir, please, right this way!"
  • If you use it all the time, it loses its much needed dramatic effect :)
  • That's fucking true.
  • shameless
i'd imagine parallel parking would be a breeze
  • For some reason it looks smaller than I had imagined. Is this 1:1 scale?
  • This is one of the main reasons why I love Cameron's designs in film. They look practical, intelligent, and most importantly "tangible". Till this day, the stuff he's concepted in the Terminator and Aliens movies are still used as reference for other films and videogames.
  • Honestly the pictures really don't do much to excite me, what will excite me is a TRAILER!!! Or even some stills of the finalized film.
  • Kelt
    Thats it?

Im sorry Cameron, but I was expecting more than just a rehash of the mechs from Matrix Revolutions with an added cockpit
  • It does have some similarities, it has a look sort of like a cross between an APU from the Matrix Revolutions ( http://www.nra.co.za/content/apu73.jpg ) and ED-209 from Robocop ( http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/929/ed209roboc... ).

I just expected something fresh, and this definitely isn't fresh
  • filmkid
its not a big deal most mech are all similar anyway from Manga/anime, video games, films etc
  • Is that a windshield wiper? Jesus... kinda loses the menacing look.
  • Adam Mordo
It does sissify it quite a bit yes but seems rather practical. It'd be kinda hard to pilot a mech when you're windshield's covered in blood and itty-bitty pieces of charred flesh
  • They make wipers that clean stuff like that? I need some heavy duty wipers. I get hail and it's replacement time.
  • jules
I wonder if Sigourney Weaver will be piloting this against an alien queen? "Get away from her, you bitch!"
  • Kelt
Will she even appear in the movie? I was under the impression she was playing a Nav'i
  • Adam Mordo
    Why is it purple?
  • I believe thems are lights.

All of these images for Avatar have been really underwhelming for me because all the quotes are that this movie is going to be revolutionary and yet all of the designs for it look really familiar (as in from past Cameron films like the Terminator movies).
Also, if this is supposed to be some huge blockbuster that will make us reassess our ideas of adult cinema then a standard sci-fi movie to me is not going to do it even if the 3-D is done really well. Outside of the Matrix films, have sci-fi blockbusters really felt "revolutionary" recently?

...and this is why 3D is an unnecessary hype element for Avitar. It would seem that many of the fans for this type of Cameron film were not that old when Terminator, Aliens, or The Abyss appeared on theater screens. Those fans got a very vague whiff from Titanic, but that doesn't do much to explain the excitement that builds for a Cameron film.

It's been interesting to see how Cameron has adapted his release approach to the internet/fan age we are currently in. So far, I'm enjoying the very slow roll-out. Things like this mech deserve to have their own reception. It's that cool.

Seeing this thing to scale, I'm wondering how far away we are from seeing them on the screen in actual use. Just think, if we push ahead the number of years since T2 (about 20) to 2030, mech like this might not need any cgi boost.

    best halloween costumer ever!
  • looks like mech warrior or something of the like.
  • freemachine
The "heavy loaders" in Aliens were one of the most spectacular things I'd ever seen in a film. Cameron has now had 20 to improve on this technology and I'm positive that these babies will be one of the many highlights in the upcoming Avatar. I'm sure I'll walk out of the cinema saying to myself, "Damn! I wish I had one of those."
  • I want, no no. I need to obtain one of those.

    For peace keeping purposes. :D

This is carefully planned leak to get people talking about AVATAR. They want this movie to succeed. A lot of money was sunk into this movie. They need to build the buzz.
  • This thing reminds me of Warhammer 40k.
  • "Lost Planet" anyone? Can't wait.
  • Dylan
I WANT A FUCKING TRAILER NOW!
  • skywarp
Cool. Looks kinda like Battle Tech mechs. I'm really looking forward to this movie. C'mon December!
  • A strap to hold the gun? really? he can do better than that!
