Michael Bay, Transformers 2

Rival movie studios are claiming that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is tracking to open huge at the box office. According to Nikki Finke’s sources, the movie might open with a high $175 million 5-day opening when the big giant robots are unleashed on Wednesday June 24th. If this number turns out to be true, it could be the second biggest 5-day opening of all time. Which film claims the 5-Day record? Answer after the jump.

The Dark Knight claims the #1 spot with $203.7 million. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith holds the #2 record with $172.8 million, with a mid-May 2005 release. The first Transformers opened on a Monday night, and made $133.2 in its first five days of release (which due to the strange release date, doesn’t include a $22.1 million Sunday)

Paramount will likely deny reports of high-level tracking to better manage expectations. Opening weekend is key, and surpassing tracking expectations is very important. Is it possible that rival studios are leaking unrealistically high expectations to water down Transformer’s box office victory? Yeah. But the end of June, early July is a hot time period for Hollywood releases: Spider-Man 2 made $152 million in its first five days on the same week in 2004. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest pulled in $152 in its first 5 days in July 2006. It is very possible that Transformers 2 will hit $160 million+.

  • this is madness!

    Madness....
  • This! Is! Oh, nevermind...
  • ...Sparta...?
  • Amit
    haha..thats funny :P
  • BamaJuice
    This is excellent.
  • I hope it's true.
  • I hope it does well so the third installments effectts budget is even bigger.
  • Totally expected. Transformers has one of the broadest appeals around. Every time I'm at the theatre I hear people remark about the standee. People of different ages, races, gender, just about everyone you can think of is waiting for this movie.
  • Oh I hope Sumner Redstone has a cameo
  • wow thats on pace to become top 5 box office movies of all time
  • Kelt
I am definitely expecting a 170-185 million opening

I know there seem to be a lot of people who rag on the first movie, but Im not sure they understand just how massively popular it is.
  • Sundance Kid
That would be quite the feat, considering that it opens on a wednesday. It would essentially need to have a 100+ opening weekend to reach that amount. The only other movie to open with 100+ is revenge of the sith (open thur). I could see a opening day around 45 mill (like order of the phoenix). Plus it'll need this fast start to have any chance of reaching 400 mil. Half blood prince will be quite the competition, similar to the summer of 07

I expect it to make as much, or slightly better, than Spider-Man 2. That was also a big-budget sequel to a well-loved movie, coming out 2 years after the first one, with the same director, cast, crew, etc. So, I'm expecting 90-95M opening weekend for TF2, with 60-70M made in the first 2 days. I don't think it has a big chance to hit $400M, but 360-380M it will do easily. #1 movie of the year? Most likely, unless Avatar claims the spot next winter. Don't think Harry Potter has a chance to beat TF.
  • For a second there I thought the article predicted 175 opening weekend which would totally dominate the unbelievable 158 million by TDK. I don't know how to predict 5 day openings but for the opening weekend, I predict at least 130 million.
  • Inconceivable!

Yeah, meme out of the way... I can see that happening. Looking at the release schedule, it has a good three weeks before any real competition arises with Harry Potter. Public Enemies will bring in some money but I doubt it will be massively popular (but who knows with Depp and Bale). Ice Age 3 will bring in quite a bit of money with little kids and families but I expect Transformers to stay on top until Harry Potter. Maybe with good reviews and word of mouth, it can compete with Harry Potter but I doubt it.

    It's the economy, stupid!
People are skipping out on what doesn't look like spectacle and saving for that which does.
As much as Transformers 2 doesn't excite me, I can see the logic in the numbers.
Just, please, don't best The Dark Knight.
  • Why? If it beats Dark Knight, what happens?
  • MoreDag
I'd prefer that The Dark Knight retain supremacy over Transformers 2. It'd give me faith in society.
But, I didn't pose the remark as something relating to "what happens" should Transformers 2 best TDK.
Does that answer your question? And if you're going to be rhetorical, don't ask.
  • Why, Stephen, Why?
  • It's going to do $160 easy in the first 5.
  • danno
Wow - a lot of spondulocs for some cartoon robots.
  • fex
I'm totally gonna pirate this movie!
  • sorry mate but you must be on some kind of crack cocaine.
if wolverine got 87 im pretty sure Transformers 2 will beat it by at least 50%
    u do the maths artard!
  • Danny
Considering movie prices (where I am at least) are a whole buck more than they were last year, I really wouldn't see this as a big deal. I wish they would report the box office as tickets sold instead.
  • Tanaka
This movie is gonna blow TDK out of the water and claim top spot.
  • optimusprime
185 million for the first 5 days is my prediction
  • why don't you refrain from using the N word, dumbass?
  • well, its getting my £8...
  • love1
    this movie looks bad!
  • Larry
This film will make a lot of money.
    JUNE 24th.. The War Continues..
  • JKW
Agreed on the "dear God this movie better not beat The Dark Knight or my faith in society is gone"...I mean, I can understand the mass appeal of spectacle involving giant robots and Megan Fox, but seeing MICHAEL BAY garner more success in the box office over somebody like Christopher Nolan would make me violently ill.
  • CyT
Yeah but remeber the MTV awards! Fox + LeBouf + Bay would sit better with the tweenies than Nolan + Ledger + Caine + Bale + Oldman ... oh godammit, TDK is waaaayyyy superior!!!!
  • This is certainly bad news, it means more shitty movies based on our beloved franchises.
  • 790
    Not interested.
  • Sarah
It could make 175 million in the first five days, maybe more, who knows, I do know lots of folks can't wait for this movie. This film has fans of all ages, all races, I'd really like to see it break all kinds of boxoffice records. Can't wait for the fun to began. JUNE 24th.
  • CyT
I was pleasantly suprised by Transformers. Its one of the best popcorn flicks Ive seen for ages, and it definitely rated high with my fiance which is rare for a sci-fi kinda film. I think after the more ground gained from DVD sales more people will want to witness this in a cinema so it could quite probably reach these heights. We will just have to wait and see.

Given the marketing is not as good as TDK I will place my bet on it not quite reaching the same heights.
  • CyT
Amazing to see Titanic only pulled in 50 million or so from its first 5 days but went on to be the biggest grossing of all time.
  • Matt
Am I the only one who thought the first movie sucked ?? i fell asleep in theatre...the sequel looks even worse, this movie will blow hard
  • ddjdjd
I dont understand why people even go see the movie if you dont like it. I personally like the movie. I mean I do want to see the movie hit boxoffice. This movie is great for all ages etc...
