The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn

Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment have finally announced their release plans for Steven Spielberg’s 3D performance capture adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. The film will be released internationally in late October and early November, 2011, more than a month before the film is released stateside by Paramount on December 23rd 2011.

The early international release makes sense as the property is a lot more popular overseas. The reception from European audiences and critics will be a nice transition for American audiences who aren’t as familiar with the character.

Jamie Bell stars as the title character, Tintin, an intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig as the nefarious Red Rackham. From a screenplay by Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, and featuring a supporting cast of Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook.

The film is the first of a planned series of 3D performance capture movies based on the character. Peter Jackson is scheduled to direct the second film, and a third film has been announced, but no director is yet attached.

  • With all of the talent involved, why am I not excited to see these movies?
  • Probably the same reason why they are releasing it internationally first.
  • Jesus this movie is a long ways away.
  • wow 2 years of post production? That's some Malick status
  • Ender
I thought that was a typo and supposed to say 2010. Oh well, at least it'll hopefully be a good movie to go out on before the end of the world in 2012.
  • Yeah, that's a really long ways away.
    Too bad
  • I had no idea it was so far away...forgive my ignorance, but does Spielberg have anything else in the works that'll be released before that? I know Jackson has the Lovely Bones.
  • Joe
    Well, there's the Spaghett adaptation...
  • SPAGET!
  • Jackson is also producing The Hobbit and working on getting Halo up and running again. Sadly, I think the possibilities of a Halo film being made hinge directly on the success of District 9 which likely won't be that big at the box office. And Spielberg has quite a few movies he is producing between now and then as well. But nothing that he is directing or writing.

In the 20th anniversary of Empire magazine that Spielberg served as guest editor on, he mentioned in one of the articles that the Lincoln movie might come out in a year or so.
  • Stupid question here, but I thought Tin Tin was a dog?
  • Ken Wallace
You're thinking of Rin Tin Tin...
  • Tin Tin is a French comic strip detective, Rin Tin Tin is the world's most famous german shephard.
  • Peter
Wow, A Spielberg movie released in Europe first? Never thought I'd see the day.
Hopefully then that the movie is actually good or it's going to be a ticking time bomb for US audiences.

It's not that often abig budget Hollywood movie is released in Europe before the US. Last big budget film that did that (that I know of) was Quantum of Solace and that was only by a week.
  • Ryan
And Transformers 2 we get on 19th June :D
  • Steven Moffat wrote the script? That makes me want to see the movie.

Looks like Speiberg lost a bet,,,
  • I've got to say I disagree heartily with not releasing films at the same time everywhere. Sure I'm a beneficiary here but normally not such as Terminator which I will finally get to see next week here in Scotland.
