Mickey Rourke Talks About Whiplash’s Iron Man 2 Suit

Empire got the chance to talk to Mickey Rourke about his role as Tony Stark’s new nemesis in the Marvel comic book sequel Iron Man 2.

“I’m having the time of my life!” he enthused about joining the Iron Man franchise. “It’s been really brutal, because my Iron Man suit weighs 23lb. It’s sort of a half-suit, with half my skin showing, with lots of Russian tattoos, because [Whiplash is just] out of a Russian-zone prison.”

Rourke even visited the Butyrka prison as research for the role. The character is said to incorporate elements of Crimson Dynamo from the comics. I’m assuming that they did this in order to use Dynamo’s Russian background to connect the character with Black Widow, who’s also Russian. Iron Man 2 has just reached the half-way point of principal photography. The film will hit theaters on May 7th 2010.

  • Maybe I'm just ignorant but I don't think Iron Man has the BEST villains in the comics. I think NOW he's getting better foes due to the newfound popularity, but in most cases, the majority of his enemies were dudes in robot suits.

    Iron Man's arch nemesis is The Mandarin, and even he's..out there..

    Merging Whiplash and the Crimson Dynamo into 1 character? I'm a little wary about that, but I'll have to see it before I can even criticize it.
  • I'm with ya. Even though they're meh villains, still. But then again they merged Ras Al Ghul with Ducard from the original stories and that worked out fine for everyone it seemed. Still body exposing suit? How practical is that when you're getting shot at with missles and repulsor blasts?

    It would be interesting to see the Mandarin, but seriously, as a tech heroe, he's gonna be going up against tech villains over the more fantastical ones to keep the series somewhat grounded.

    But hey I'm all for Fin Fang Foom if you ask me...

  • Iron Man has always been a second grade superhero with lousy villains. But he translates very well into movies.

    I'm not an Iron Man aficionado, but why does any rumor of a prospective villain always describe what kind of suit said villain wears? Does everyone in the Iron Man universe have a super-suit? Isn't anyone just a guy with a normal outfit?

  • I finally Saw "the Wrester" and I must say Mickey Rourke acting is phenomenom. I'm defiantly looking forward to seeing him in Iron Man 2. Making him a villian was pure Genious!! I'm curious to see how that's going to turn out. Especially after he said he is having the time of his life filming Iron Man 2.

    Oh god, not 23 lbs! That's just way to heavy. Actually, as one in the US Infantry that'd be amazing to only have to carry 23 lbs on my body up these mountains in the god forsaken land of Afghanistan.
