Full Trailer For Sci-Fi Thriller Pandorum

pandorum_header

Ever had one of those days where everything you read seems to be about things going bump in the eternal night of deep, dark space? I’m having one right now. Not only is there an Alien remake-reboot-rehash on the cards, as reported by Peter, there’s a freshly minted full trailer for Christian Alvart’s Pandorum doing the rounds. The film stars Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid as two crew members waking from suspended animation on a deep space jaunt to face… a creepy situation that I won’t spoil right here. You can see the trailer below the break and decide for yourself if it’s more Pitch Black than Alien, or vice versa.

Actually, there’s even a whiff of Event Horizon rising off of the thing, I think you’ll agree, which might not be surprising as Paul W. S Anderson and Jeremy Bolt are amongst the producers. Or how about Dark Star?

Not knowing the full storyline, I can’t be sure but there seem to be a great deal of plot reveals spoiled by this trailer - as is so often the way, at least for the last five or six years - so proceed with all due caution.

Pandorum will be released in the US in September, thereby trumping Alvart’s previously produced film Case 39. That one, at least for the moment, only seems set for a big screen release outside of North America. Paramount’s official Case 39 site lists a release date for just about every country in the world, though the US and Canada are conspicuous by their absence. I had to check to see if the UK date fell on a Friday or a Monday because I wanted to be sure these weren’t direct to DVD dates, and it seems not.

Most people’s hopes for Pandorum, or indeed Case 39, rest on Alvart’s Antibodies. That was the film that brought him to the attention of festival programmers, worldwide genre fans and the big money production companies. Antibodies was a serial killer film with a sci-fi or fantasy twist, and it seems this is the area Alvart is dedicated to claiming: thrillers with a high-concept, fantastical bent.

Interestingly, the film’s tagline is “Don’t fear the end of the world. Fear what happens next.” That points in a slightly different direction than the trailer, I think. Perhaps an explanation lies in the fact that when Alvart was shown the Pandorum script, it was somewhat different to the one he took into production. He’d been working on a slightly similar sci-fi screenplay himself, called No Where, and the two ended up becoming melded. From what I can discern, the tagline seems to hit the No Where notes, the trailer the original Pandorum ones.

first - haha hate when people do that, but i guess when its your turn u just cant help it.

looks good, i think space always works well in a good horro/thriller
  • Maybe *you* can't help it.
  • I'll see this because I'm a sucker for sci-fi. Especially the 'crisis in space' variety, such as 2001, Alien, Sunshine etc. But to be honest the trailer isn't that exciting to me.
  • I agree but then again when I first saw the trailers for Sunshine, I wasn't impressed at all. Now, after seeing the film, it is easily one of the best sci fi movies in the last decade or two.
  • Truth. I forgot, but I actually didn't like the Sunshine trailer either. Very good point.
  • Yeah, when I first saw the trailer I was assuming it would be yet another low budget attempt at a space horror thriller that wouldn't be good at all. Holy shit was I wrong.
  • Wow...this paints an entirely different picture than the trailer preceding Terminator Salvation did.
  • Warning to all those excited by this trailer: the movie is not that good. I saw a test screening of it. The trailer makes it look way more interesting than it actually is. The monsters/creatures/whatever-the-hell in the film are ridiculously lame, and basically serve no purpose to the story. Figures Paul WS Anderson would have a hand in it, since all the potential the film had to be a compelling psychological sci-fi thriller is tossed aside in favor of frenetic editing and people being chased by cheap-looking creatures.

I left the theater severely disappointed.

If anybody has any questions about it, feel free to ask.
  • Spill the beans, Adam. As many beans as you can. I'm all eyes.

Looks like resident evil in space?

Some experiment goes wrong or they come in contact with some alien thing. Half the crew goes creature, the rest try to survive.

    close?

Are you talking about the screening in Sacramento? I was there and I thought the movie was awesome!
  • Yup, that's the one. What did you like about the movie though? I thought it was pretty dull. :/
  • *SPOILERS AHEAD*

Actually, the trailer is pretty deceptive. It alters the context of certain scenes from the movie around to make it look like the characters turn into the creatures, but they don't. There's nothing like that in the movie. The whole thing is essentially just the Ben Foster character trying to get to the "reactor" or "generator" or some such, and in order to do so he has to traverse the ship with some thoroughly unappealing/uninteresting characters and try to escape the lame monsters (whose origins make absolutely no logical sense---or maybe it was explained so quickly and poorly that I simply didn't understand it).

Meanwhile, Dennis Quaid gets an easy paycheck as "the guy who sits around". He vanishes for a good portion of the film, and then reappears toward the end to fulfill the film's tired need for a "crazy twist" (which might just be the lamest, most overused twist in existence). The worst part though, is that there isn't even a need for the twist. It has nothing to do with anything else in the film. It might've had the film actually paid off on its intriguing opening, but nope, they decided to go the 'pointless monsters' route. The film would've been much more interesting if it had just stuck to the "characters suffering from pandorum" concept, which is barely capitalized on in the film.

I wouldn't really call it Resident Evil in space though. The most obvious inspiration is definitely Alien, particularly with the set design. That was also probably the one thing about the film that I really liked.

I thought the trailer had a distinct 'Dead Space' feel about it. One of my favourite games from last year. Even after your comments I'm still curious about the movie.
  • Tazer
Definitely a strong System Shock vibe to it (SS is the grand-daddy of sci-fi horror games that things like Dead Space, Bioshock are based off)

Especially the whole part about waking up from stasis losing their memories and the ships crew turned into monsters.
  • Anon
They explained the creatures origins. The goo they were fed while in stasis allowed them to rapidly adapt to the new awaiting climate but instead they adapted to life on the ship.

Quaid suffering from Pandorum is what starts the whole process. He loses it when he finds out that Earth is gone and they are all that's left and goes on a killing spree.

The fight club twist of the movie was good. It was a pretty tense film and was far better than any Resident Evil Film was. I saw more inspiration from Serenity and Ghosts of Mars than Alien.
  • Ok, so yeah, I was right. The creatures origin makes absolutely no logical sense. That explanation was thrown in to justify the unnecessary addition of monsters in the film.

And yeah, I get that Quaid suffering from pandorum was what lead to the beginning of the film, but the opening and the ending were the only aspects of the movie that the pandorum subplot were even relevant to. It had practically nothing to do with the rest of the film.

From a storytelling standpoint, Pandorum was a huge bust.
  • Looks interesting, though it has been done over and over again sort of like the man vs machine concept but it still looks like a good suspenseful movie to me.
  • Looks like a intresting Alien Flick, we will see.
  • AGC
Maybe it is Aliens meets The Game and all the passengers are hiding in a giant banquet room on-board.
  • You know everybody keeps saying Aliens, or a little pitch black, but after watching this trailer about two times, it really reminds me of The Descent in Space.
Because comparing it to Aliens even just a little bit... is pretty bad.
  • I was thinking the exact same thing about it feeling exactly like "The Descent"; a movie I was seriously disappointed they did not go for a psychological thriller where you don't know if what you are seeing is even real. But instead they too went for the crappy bat-creature monster movie. :P

That was the first thought that came to my mind too. I really dig Sci-Fi but this didn't really peak my interests. I might Netflix it, but I can say I won't be dropping $10 to see it.
  • That trailer for Case 39 looked pretty friggin awesome!
I think that movie could have a chance in the post The Hangover world, mostly because of Bradley Cooper's presence. I'd just suggest that they don't give away that HE DIES IN THE FRIGGIN TRAILER! What is with this trend we're seeing? What happened to the days of Angel Eyes when all you needed for a trailer was a few lines of dialogue and Jennifer Lopez's eyes? What happened to the days of being surprised by a movie and not by the trailer? Ugh. Grumble.
This looked alright, too. I'll see anything Ben Foster does, that guy is one of the amazing and underused actors of our generation.
  • I'll still see it. Trailers are supposed to make a movie seem bigger than it really is. It did enough to make me want to see it.
  • It has Ben Foster. I'm all for it. The man was amazing in 30 Days of Night as well as 3:10 to Yuma. This is a very different role for him though so we'll have to see how he does.
  • Quinn
I'll watch it for free when a buddy brings it over, but I'll probably never pay to see it.
  • So....They're a bunch or Reaver's right? This is some...Same world, Firefly spin off / Alien's ripoff? right? Shrug.

Ben Foster though. I like Ben Foster.
  • Looked like Eden Log with the monster change over thing, but as per Adam I guess that doesn't happen. It looks good(rental), and Ben Foster has certainly been on a role. Any news of his possible spin-off of 30-Days of night character?
  • Fir3Wolf
It didn't look that bad and like Michael Bay, Paul W.S. Anderson seems to always get a lot of hate but I like his movies. Event Horizon was one of my favorite sci-fi horror movies. This movie does seem pretty interesting and I'll still see it with caution of course. I'll take what you said about the movie Adam to heart but I'm sure its not all that bad.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I always find a lot to like from Anderson's films -- at least in pieces of the whole. Death Race was stupid as hell and I'll blame him for that, but it looked nice. Resident Evil has the Milla secret weapon, so it's hard to judge, but I watch those films any time I surf past them.
  • Looks a bit poo to be honest. Trailer started off well, with lots of tension and atmosphere, but as soon as that woman was introduced it become so cliché. Too much obvious and unimaginative wirework. Also, isn't that line 'Is that your blood?' 'Some of it.' just copied straight from Fight Club?
  • Seth
    Liberate tutame ex infernis.
  • Yup, Event Horizon. Love that and this seems very similar.
  • Noooooooooooooo! Ben Foster is too good for this. Hollywood has the Sci-Fi fever. I hope tomorrow I read a post here announcing an Ice Pirates reboot...
  • Could this be the first role Dennis Quaid is actually good in?!
  • Lykans in space. Or Blade. Not interesting.
  • dagreenman18
Looks ok, but i kinda wish it didn't have the other characters and just had Quaid and Foster vs crazy shit. That would have been cooler.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Same here. I recently watched the Dead Space film and it looks like it could be a live action version of that. I'm cool with that.

I don't think anyone argues that Sunshine works completely as a film (3rd act), but there is enough there to make the experience of the film worth it. I'd be kicking myself if I didn't see that film in the theater.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I'll take a little space madness any time I can get it. Succeed or not, the concept is the sell for me. I want to see what they do with it.

Quaid is underrated. I'm glad he's doing this.
  • Brad
"Is that your blood?" "Some of it"

I could be wrong, but isn't that a direct lift from Fight Club?
  • meh.
  • Elizabeth
It looks like a badly executed attempt to mimic Dead Space, which I think would be a much more compelling film to make if done right.
  • Elizabeth
    I think he said "body"
