Tomb Raider Reboot To Be a Realistic Lara Croft Origin Story

In January, it was revealed that a new Tomb Raider movie was in development. Not a sequel but a complete reboot of the series. About.com was able to catch up with producer Dan Lin and find out a little more about the project. Lin reveals that the film will be a “very character orientated” origin story, which hopes to take a “more realistic” tone than past Tomb raider movies.I guess this means we won’t be seeing Lara punching any sharks this time around.

He also says it will be a younger Lara Croft, which has some sites assuming that he means teenage. Megan Fox had been the subject of Internet rumors surrounding the project earlier this year. And while casting has yet to begin (it still sounds like they’re in the story development phase), who knows?

I just find the way they talk it up very odd. I didn't watch the first film and think "oh man, if only this was more realistic then it'd be good". So for any reboot of the franchise I just want a good film, the "realistic" or "darker" buzzwords they throw around are all bullshit.

I'm not advocating Megan Fox (my money's on Carroll or some virtual no name) but if you think the Lara Croft role requires dramatic talent...you're expecting too much from the Tomb Raider story.

I actually do expect more (and so should everyone). Sure, we might get another brainless bit of flash and action, but there is no reason to have your hopes and standards there to begin with. Audiences deserve well crafted and acted stories.

And we get them from films whose origins come from all over the map. We're unfortunately discussing a genre that studios develop for no reason than to make a buck. This isn't news. You can hope for more - that's certainly granted. But to expect more from a video game to film adaptation after the current standing (and severely disappointing) history is an exercise comparable to banging your head against a wall. The wall doesn't get softer. Your head doesn't get harder. You just bleed more.

I would love to see Scarlet JH in this. She's curve, but not too curvy for Lara (esp. after the training she's done for IM2). Just dye her hair brown, and give her some British accent lessons. Boom. As for this "new" take, I hope they don't lose the supernatural elements from the game. While the previous films SUCKED, and had too much supernatural shit (that never made sense), the games always introduced the monsters and shit fairly subtly (except the dinosaurs), until the final levels.

in light of the underworld mention, why not Kate Beckinsale? she may look a little old for the part but thats the only problem i can see with casting her. but, alas, im gonna see the movie no matter whose in it cuz i love me some tomb raider

Seriously though I don't object the idea purely on the basis of seeing Megan Fox doing what she does best on screen (I'm not referring to her "acting" abilities either).

I've never understood why some people can judge the merit of a film based on the lead character's attractiveness and screen time. I'm sure you're not serious that you'd pay to see a movie (and support further sequels) solely because an attractive girl struts around on screen.

There are plenty of clips of Megan Fox on the internet that you could watch and re-watch until your palms are rubbed raw - why pay a production company for the same thing?

I don't mind a new direction for Tomb Raider at all. They just need to concentrate on mystery and adventure (think female Indiana Jones) and lose the techno styling. Even the TR games had some interesting music. The films demand a score.

Give the character a little thought, hire an actress that can pull off the attitude (most imortantly), do action, and reasonably look the part. Win.

haha - yeah, I mostly agree with you, but as a fan of film, I think it's pretty tragic that we should only be treated to a few fully realized action/adventures per decade. I'm blaming the studios and their 5 day gross mentality, but I'm also blaming fans for enabling that system of mediocrity.

No blood lost for skipping the theater on half-baked films.

...and this coming from someone that absolutely loved Crank 2, which may (or may not ) discredit my opinion on this :)

Alison Carol, Angelina Jolie, or a past TR model with acting skills are the best choices. This is coming from a TR fan for many years. She needs to have a perfect British accent and have attitude, not a skinny twig pretending to be badass. She needs to be tough, buff, and beautiful.
