John Lithgow Joins Dexter, 24 Casts Two More

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that John Lithgow is joining the Season 4 cast of Dexter and The Hollywood Reporter has word that  Jennifer Westfeldt and John Boyd have joined the cast of the eigth season of Fox’s 24.Full details after the jump.

In Dexter, Lithgow would be playing Walter Simmons, (possible spoilers ahead - highlight the invisotext to reveal) an unassuming suburbanite serial killer named Trinity Killer (because he always kills in threes) who relocates to Miami. Dexter becomes obsessed with “his efficient killing methods and ability to evade capture for almost three decades.” Sounds like Lithgow is the antagonist for the fourth season.

In 24, Boyd (The Notorious Bettie Page) will play Jonah Schwartz, one of the new systems analysts at CTU. Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein) will play Meredith Reed, an ambitious journalist with ties to Arman Hashemi (Anil Kapoor), a Middle East leader on a US peacemaking mission.

Season 8 will be set a year-and-a-half to two years after Day 7 in New York City, and would include the reformation of a “more budget-conscious” CTU, complete with new leader. Season Eight begins production this week.

  • Sounds awesome. I love both of these shows.
  • Now just tell me Lithgow is becoming a main character and not another one season type guest role. Dexter needs some more characters since the loss of Doaks in season two.
  • I miss Doaks. He was an asshole, but he was a necessary balance. He was the chaotic good to Dexter's Lawful evil.
  • Exactly! Doaks brought a balance to the show, and it was missing that in season three. Also I believe that Rudy should still be haunting dexter but as with doaks they got rid of him very early in season two.
  • Lithgow vs. Dexter? Awesome
  • Sheriff Dewey
And what serial killer du jour will Lithgow play? I feel a slight yawn coming on. Look, I still consider myself a Dexter fan, but I'm beginning to get a little bored with the whole "top the next killer" routine. I'm also not feeling how every plot point needs to be tied up with a nice little bow by the last episode. Never a lingering threat for Dexter! Call me critical I guess and I'm sure I'll get slammed for saying anything in the first place. Maybe I just became bitter when they killed off Miguel. He had so much potential! Oh well.

actually last season they placed all kinds of mines for dexter to dodge including his sister starting to unravel the same mystery dexter solved in season 1.
  • Luke
Actually, they haven't had a proper rival serial killer since Season 1. S2 was Lyla (serial arsonist maybe), S3 was Miguel and the Skinner (serial kinner-in-training, and a torturer). I hope this season brings back the feeling of the first season.
  • I thought I read somewhere that Season 8 takes place just a few months after season 7 with Jack still in a coma to start.
  • INS
can hate on Dexter yet, it does sound like they are running out of ideas for where to take the story next but as mentioned earlier, Lithgow vs Hall will be great TV
  • Zach
I read a rumor about Dexter season 4 stating that by the end of the season, Dexters sister ends up figuring everything out, and they turn into some sort of hybrid team. I am hoping she isn't going to join in his killings, but maybe be there to help him cover them up.

I also heard that the new season is months later, after Dexter's son is born. So that will be another thing for him to juggle.
  • I like the 2nd part of the rumor but not the first. In the books, Debra figures it out and kind of understands why Dexter kills but doesn't help out. I think the show will have her figuring it out and having them split ways or something like that. I wouldn't want to see them teaming up though.
  • I say this is good news for Dexter. I always like to see serial killers come face to face but with Dexter winning every time. Lithgow is a good addition but who else thinks that if it were possible, it would be awesome to have Bryan Cranston as another serial killer? The guy is great on Breaking Bad.
  • Yeah! I love the tidbits given away about Dexter. Its better with a worthy adversary. I mean season 3 was fantastic but not really for the skinner so a real 'baddie' would be great.
  • I love Dexter. I love Lithgow. This is a total win.
  • Dude Lithgow as a pyscho killer!?! amazing. Could care less about 24 casting. I like the show but a CTU analyst hardly matters.
