Lemony Snicket Sequel is Still Possible

Lemony Snicket

When the big screen adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfourtunate Events was released in 2004, the plan was to produce more films based on the best selling children’s book series. But the film was not as successful as the studios had hoped, only becoming profitable on DVD. CineFools talked with Land of the Lost director Brad Silberling, who says there is still hope for a sequel.

“It was a co-production between Paramount and Dreamworks and there were studio politics and I actually think it’s going to see the light of day,” Silberling told cineFools. “[Name removed] and I, he’s the writer of… is very friendly with Mr. Snicket I should say, we stay in constant touch about it, because I would love nothing more than to do that and we’ve been hoping to, so I think there will be a chance it may take a wildly different form but I think it will probably happen.”

I actually quite enjoyed the clever and dark children’s tale, and would love them to explore some of the storylines after the first three books. And heck, its not like Jim Carrey has anything better to do.

kids are a bit too old now.
  • Truth. I would've liked to see this 3 or 4 years ago.
  • yeah, I think they're both legal age now :-s

but I suppose they can always cast other kids?

I really enjoyed that movie. Personally I think it's the last enjoyable I've watched with Jim Carrey in it.
  • I thought the film was alright... not too bad, not too great. It was enjoyable at its best.
  • I've read all the books and I must say they could make some pretty good movies out of them. Let's hope this happens.

"its not like Jim Carrey has anything better to do"
How about that proposed Jason Reitman film, the Beaver, and the Three Stooges which all sound really promising (i'll admit, im still on the fence about Stooges, but c'mon look at that cast!). It's easy to dismiss Carrey due to his crappy broad studio stuff, but when the guy gets a good role, he always delivers Im still looking forward to Phillip Morris as well.
  • Haaaa I totally own this movie. But it's more because I like the look of it than because I think it's a good movie. Sometimes I will just put it on and mute it and have it be like...moving art or something. I do the same thing with Alfie starring Jude Law.
  • the set design and the costumes in Lemony Snicket were definitely AWESOME, I'll give you that.

It would be cool just to reboot the whole series - the only thing I would love to see Hollywood rebooting! Check out the Brett Helquist illustrations in the books -they look so much like the Tim Burton-style stop motion animation he used in Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride! I think they should just animate the films that way - and maybe Tim Burton should be the one to do it! It would totally suit his style. Anyway, I'm glad to hear about this news.
  • I really enjoyed the visual style of this film and the score by Thomas Newman. I was hoping they would make more but it seems like the idea got lost on the wayside. Didn't the movie make more than 100 Million US? Isn't that enough for a sequel these days?

i heard the sequel title is

    " Jim Carey's A Series of Unfortunate Films "
  • The movie looked wonderful, but the adapation left a few things to be desired, still the kid and I were entertained. I would have loved to see a sequel a few years ago when the kids could have returned. To make a sequel now you'd have to recast everyone, but Jim Carrey. I don't suppose it's a huge deal, but the kids really did a wonderful job protraying the characters of the book.

I heard it made same gross as budget in USA so marketing was paid by europe and other countries.. so I think it coould hopefully happen, I love the books, love the first film ( carrey as count olaf was perfect choice !!) They could squeeze three following books in one film - The Ersatz Elevator would be awesome !!!
  • Who Ha
Hell, a lot of sequels are still possible, doesn't mean they have to be made.
  • Isn't Snicket the same character Jim will be playing in this years A Christmas Carol? To me is Scrooge looked terrible.....
I heard next year he is working on Jack Hogan, Animal Inspector.

    Peter R,

Lemony Snicket was a psuedonym for the author of the book (Daniel Handler).

Jim carey played Count Olaf, not Lemony Snicket.

The first one was an excellent adaptation of a fantastic series. Id love a sequel, but i just don't think it'd be possible without a recast, which would be weird and jarring.

It's a shame it didn't do well. i liked it alot better than some of the Harry Potter films.

They definitly have to make a sequel!
Emily is 20 and Liam 19 but they still look young. Plus, they could change a little the script, I mean, changing the Baudelaire ages, for example, or not giving too much importance to it. Silberling said "Yes, yes we know. Both of the kids are growing up but we are willing to make an EXCEPTION. Honestly these kids are unquestionably the perfect choice for the roles and we couldn’t afford to lose our audience just because of casting tribulations”

The film was one of the few adaptations that I can literally say ruined the books for me. I loved the series, but when the film came out, the story felt rushed from cramming three books in there. A little while later, when part 12 of the series came out (I think? The one with the submarine) I couldn't push myself through it, because by comparison to the movie, everything moved too slow. I'm not exactly calling the film or books bad by any means, but I just can't have them co-exist in my head without one tainting the other, and it's kind of upsetting, actually. I really loved those books once.

But I could probably give another two hours to a movie sequel and hope they slow down a bit, at least in pacing (and books 4-6 were my favorites at the time).
  • "And heck, its not like Jim Carrey has anything better to do."

    Yes Man 2: Heck Yea

I met Liam Aiken (Klaus) while visiting a friend at NYU. He looks exactly the same as he did in the movie only slightly taller. Also my friends told me that I couldnt mention anything about Unfortunate Events, because apparently he hates talking about it, because he had a really bad experience making the movie. I did manage to ask him a little about it, but what i got out of him was that he would never do a sequel. So much for that I guess.

by the time they get around to it, they won't need makeup for Jim Carey to look like that!!
    LOL

To Be Honest, ive read the books, ive got them all, and i was a really big fan, and when i heard they were doing a movie i was sooo stoked, and then this came out and i was a bit like wtffff.
the books are more dark and scary, and no offence to Jim Carey because i do love him, but he really werent the right person for Olaf, it shouldnt have been comical.
  • I loved the first one and thought it was probably the best Carey movie in years. Funny, good antics and the works what you expect out of him. Would like to see another since it is a series of stories anyways.
