Anchorman

We’ve been hearing about a possible Anchorman sequel for the last year. Most of the original cast members and creative team have expressed interest in making a sequel, but with the popularity of the film’s three main stars on the rise, I’ve pessimistically ruled it off as a possibility.

Will Ferrell is making the rounds doing publicity for Land of the Lost and was asked for an update while appearing on an Australian radio show Jono & Dano. According to Moviehole, Ferrell told the hosts that “everyone is meeting next week” to discuss a possible sequel. Ferrell went on to joke that the meeting is really to see whether or not Paul Rudd and Steve Carell are willing to take pay cuts, as he wouldn’t be.

In May of last year, director Adam McKay said he wanted to return to Anchorman after his next film, which never ended up going into production. Paul Rudd later revealed that they were considering setting the film in the 1980’s, or maybe even on the moon. I’m not sure I’m interested in an Anchormen in Space movie, but a film set in the 80’s would allow for all kinds of fun pop culture jokes.

But with all the parties coming together for a discussion about a sequel, things are begining to sound a lot more serious. Could we see a Anchorman 2 in 2010?

I consider Anchorman to be one of the few sacred comedies of my generation and Ferrell has been putting out a lot of stinkers lately . A sequel to this could easily go the way of Caddyshack 2. I'm not sure if I like this.

Please leave it be. I just don't think it's possible to make a good sequel to Anchorman.
  • I agree, I loved the first anchorman, but sometimes things are only really great the first time around.

However, with sequels 60 percent of the time they work, all the time. :P

No, just no. Anchorman was great and had its memorable moments, but IMO it's just not possible for a sequel to match that. Plus Ferrell has constantly decreased in hilarity for me with every movie he comes out in lately.

Can we all admit that Anchorman simply wasn't funny? It should have been. The concept is funny (stolen from The Mary Tyler Moore Show), but the film sucks. I wanted to like it but I didn't crack a smile once. Too forced.

no we can't... and you're obviously in the minority you old cantankerous killjoy.
  • Yes we can all agree that humour is subjective and no will will ever all admit to anything. Oh and Anchorman is fantastic.
  • On Rove, an Australian TV Show recently, Will Ferrel was asked by Rove (the host) about Anchorman 2, and he said that he's definitely interested...

I didn't think Anchorman was funny either.
  • Ferrell, Rudd and Carrell reuniting would be the best comedy of next year easily. Anchorman is a perfect blend of character comedy work and improvisation that hit all the markers for me personally. Also as a collector of all things Anchorman a new film would certainly give me more stuff to spend money on. Anyone else got some Anchorman merchandise?
  • I have Will Ferrell's moustache. Want to buy that?
  • It would go well with the rest of my shrine haha
  • It could be good. Will Ferrel's movies haven't been too funny since Anchorman, and the whole cast really contributed there. Also, most of his movies require a second viewing. I watched Anchorman the first time, and thought it was okay. Then I watched it on DVD when it came out, laughed my ass off, and watched it four more times that week.
  • Shouldn't Brick being serving a life sentence for killing that guy with a trident?

    lol yeah!
and i wonder if they'll find out that hes mentally retarded in this movie!
  • Anchorman was decent, but not sequel worthy, IMHO.
  • A sequel to Anchorman is a horrible idea. Anchorman is considered to be one of the most successful comedies of the past years, just ask anyone who was teenager at the time and they will quote 80% of the movie for you. However, it is the kind of movie that will only bring a horrible sequel. But, with everything in Hollywood these days being sequels, prequels, and anything else that doesn't require originality in any way, it is inevitable that we will see a sequel to Anchorman, only proving, once again, that Hollywood has the power to ruin anything.
  • Peter, how could you NOT be interested in Anchorman in Space?
  • Fir3Wolf
Everyone I've talked to kept telling me that Anchorman was so funny and why haven't I seen it. So I watched it recently and well didn't find it that funny at all. I like the directors other movies that hes made recently and like them all. Anchorman however just in my opinion wasn't that funny or good. Who knows perhaps a second movie will be better.
  • I, too, am in the minority that Anchorman wasn't all that funny. Sure, it had some good moments, but it wasn't anything special. Now, Talladega Nights, McKay's sophomore effort, was brilliant and a bit unappreciated.
  • Anchorman is the high point of Ferrell's career and I doubt a sequel could meet that. In fact the only comedy I can think of that would make a worse sequel is Napoleon Dynamite.

Misogynistic Pigs in Space! *echo echo echo*

I just received word from an inside source that the reason Anchorman 2 is being held up is because Baxter wants a large pay raise.
  • Balllllllllssss
Yes, but it could be made of real Panther... so you know it's good!!
