5 New Photos from The Book of Eli

The Book of Eli

Warner Bros has released five new photos from The Hughes BrothersThe Book of Eli in Wednesday’s edition of USA Today. Described as a post-apocalyptic western, the film tells the story of a lone man (Denzel Washington) who fights his way across America in order to protect a mysterious sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. The film is set in the future after the sun has exploded, leaving earth to rot.

The photo above is from a scene where Eli comes upon a fork in the road. He decides to turn right towards a town to power up his iPod and refill his canteen. The article reveals that Washington shed 55 pounds for the role. Gary Oldman plays Carnegie, a town leader who runs the town and wants Eli’s book. Four more photos after the jump.

The Book of Eli

Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson and Jennifer Beals co-star. The Book of Eli will hit theaters on January 15th 2010.

  • Alright, the sun going supernova and Earth still being around is already stretching it, but WHY THE FUCK IS THERE SUNLIGHT IN THESE PHOTOS?!?!?!
  • WTF???? The sun exploding would take out the entire fucking solar system. Oh, yeah I better recharge my IPOD before that happens. And fill my canteen... Hell, might as well eat a Big Mac while I'm at it. Shit, the sun going nova is the least of my problems.
  • Maybe the sun exploded in a way some of you morons aren't seeing.
It's just a description, wait until the movie.
  • rcesm
Maybe the movie takes place in the 8-10 minutes it'd take for the nova'ing Sun to destroy Earth? Really... VERY... loooooooong minutes. Enough to fill 2 hours...
  • if the sun explodes, it probably won't impact us for years. Does that makes sense?

The rays of light that comes from the SUN takes XXXX of years to get here right? So the light that we see NOW is actually from a XXXX years ago.

So if the sun dies, we probably won't see the affect of it's death until later.
  • hoho
The mean distance of the Sun from the Earth is approximately 149,600,000 kilometers, or 92,960,000 miles, and its light travels this distance in 8 minutes and 19 seconds.
  • @ Octoberist69p

hoho is right. Not only would we not survive the shockwave from the explosion of an exploding star, but even IF by some odd plot point the planet did, we wouldn't. All life on the surface would be either blasted or roasted. The earth would then freeze extremely rapidly. The oceans would either evaporate from the explosion, or slowly turn to blocks of ice.

And those pictures of Denzel outside... in the um, sunlight... yeah. Unless, another sun came flying in to replace the original.... maybe it was the aliens? :p

Either way, it makes no sense whatsoever.

When the sun's hydrogen supply runs out, it will start burning off its helium. That means the sun will cool down a bit and expand into a type of star called a "Red Giant". When that happens, its growth will envelope Earth and likely Mars as well.

Not to worry, we have a good 5 billion years of our Sun left, and by that time frame, Earth will have undergone multiple ice ages as well as hundreds to thousands of cataclysmic asteroid impacts.
  • Sounds very Interesting and I'll probably watch it on opening day, but come on The Sun Exploding???? They need to fix that concept lol, ha, ha

I hope they make it make sense....
  • darkside
your everywhere you are that Dragonball Evolution fan LMAO
  • Who in this economy wants to spend $8-12 to view a depressing movie? The big money makers are those that take the audience away from the harsh reality outside of the theater for two hours. The same applies to the movies "9" and "The Road". I'm not trying to say these won't be good films, but they would all be better received in a year when the economy is doing well.
  • Wouldn't Earth be obliterated if the sun were to ever explode?

It still looks interesting. Need to see the trailer to see if this will be worth watching.
  • Looks to be a very apocalyptic year with T4, Book of Eli, and The Road. They all kind of look like they were shot with the same light kit too. I'll still see all three for sure.
  • Konrad
I'm going to guess that the sun is EXPANDING which is why everyone outside is wearing sunglasses, and the sun "exploding" part is just incorrect conjecture about the story.

Either that, or someone is pants on head retarded.
  • You could be right dude!!
  • jank
    i agree.
  • LiquidSpark
The premise is absurd but the movie still sounds really cool. I'm looking forward to it.
  • Cannot wait for this movie.
  • dannyboy
if the sun explode how comes the Earth dont be destroyed plus how comes these pics got sunlight ifs there is no more sun
  • helicopters
peter's just basing the sun-explosion thing off of an interview with mila kunis -- and she's a retard.
  • Tazer
Well its gotta be better than Costners The Postman I hope...
  • Gary Oldman as a villain again? Sign me the fuck up!
  • MTurjam
WHAT? if machines would turn against us and meant to destroy us, wouldnt it be too easy for them, really? but yeah...terminator is ok, transformers is ok, but sun explodes, turns into red star (acutally producing much more heat...and then supernova and then black hole....but later) is not ok?
  • Looks cool, I can get past the stupid sun premise if that's what it takes to get into the story.

Had to do some research on this but this is what I came up with:

Distance between the sun and the earth
    = 15 x 10^7 km
    Speed of light
    = 3 x 10^5 km/s
Time taken by light to reach the earth
    = (15 x 10^7) / (3 x 10^5) s
    = 500 s
    = 8 minutes 20 seconds.

    NASA article: http://sunearthday.nasa.gov/2007/locations/ttt_su...

So sun exploding? Makes no sense what so ever.
  • peajay
your genius ... and ... booring. no need for explainations bro. lets just say its a "SOLAR FLARE"
  • Looks stupid if the sun exploded really can't understand how everything can exist. Plus how can their be so much lighting if there is no sun? Shouldn't they be filming at night or creating more darkness?

Still might be interesting, but at the moment I look more forward to seeing The Road.
  • Nice photos. Can't wait for a trailer. I've gotta read the book soon!

    Hey nice Share link!!!! :D
  • JedK
    Is there a book?
    I don't think so.

    "Sun explodes"

Stupid. Honestly out of all the apocalyptic scenarios to choose from, the pick the one that MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE CAUSE THERE WOULD BE NOTHING LEFT OF EARTH!!!!

That being said, this could be good. It has a very strong Fallout vibe to it.
  • These look good. I hope I end up liking this. It's been too long since From Hell, and these guys need another good movie.
  • Ok...I've been thinking about this ever since I read the movie description.

How can life exist on the planet earth when our sun, yes our sun has indeed blown up???

Literally deathstar and alderaan blown the hell up...

I don't get it, but I'm sure the movie has some explanation. But I'm glad to see that Ipods have a safe place in a post apocalypic world :D
  • edc2
    solar flare.
  • "Sun Exploded"
Okay, so how is anything still alive....
Seems well lit for the sun exploding...
    "Power up his iPod"
No one would waste electricity doing that.
  • helicopters
the sun did not effing explode
  • I'm thinking Solar Flare. I mean a solar flare would make sense (although its still a huge stretch Re: Knowing). It explains the "roasted" earth etc.
  • Peter
It's true. To think that there are so few ideas left that now we have to stretch our imaginations this wide for a PREMISE, not even plot, is absurd. Anyone outside of 9th grade realizes this concept is dumb. I could get past it, but I won't just because it's so lazy and ridiculous that I won't give the writers that satisfaction. Could they not have gone with "the sun is growing into a supernova"? It would have given the same sense of doom...

And then Denzel is walking around with SUNGLASSES on?? Seriously? This is just bizarre. To think that tons of writers pitch their ideas and get rejected on a daily basis and THIS gets a green light and AAA stars. There better be some twist to this to justify the idiocy.
