Star Wars Turns 32 Years Old

Star Wars

32 years ago today, on May 25th 1977,  George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was released in movie theaters. The amazing thing is that most people consider Star Wars to be one of the first huge blockbusters, but it was only initially released in 32 movie theaters. In contrast, The Exorcist II was released on over 700 screens. Of course, the film had incredible per-screen averages and broke numerous box office and attendance records at the few locations playing the movie. And the film eventually expanded to more and more screens.

The film became a huge success, spawning 5 additional live-action films, countless merchandise, theme park rides and even a few television shows. But lets forget for a minute about the prequels and everything since, and go back to the film that started it all. Share your thoughts about A New Hope in the comments below.

    first!
  • Aaaahhhh 'first' an example of being a winner and a loser all at once haha
  • Goobity
    Nobody cares!
  • awesome-o
@joe youre right, it was the first movie, want a medal? sheet i dont have one, how about this half-eaten sandwich?
  • Erik Fong
I think Joe was making a remark about being the first person to leave a comment, not that it was the first movie. Next time, think before you post.

Oh dear Erik....I found a funny bone under my desk, think it must belong to you! *poke with a lightsaber*
  • please, i don't like those 'first' posts, but they can be easily ignored. I actually get upset that so many people would 'complain' about the first post and it's get to the point where that gets repetitive.
  • And now your complaining about complaining about first posts. And I in turn are commenting on you complaining about complaining about first posts. I agree it gets repetitive lol
  • I hate people who complain about complaining about complaining. That means you, Davebaxter
  • Dooooooooooh! (shakes fist emphatically)
  • Jack
It's even more annoying to hear someone complaining about someone complaining about the 'first' post.
  • If I were to cover Bicycle Race by Queen I'd have to change the lyrics slightly so that they end up:

Jaws was never my scene and I don't like Star Wars (as much as most other folk)

I sure like The Empire Strikes Back though. And the odd bit of Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith stand up to some stuff in the original.
  • CyT
Totally not picking a fight ... but for me Empire is my least favourite of the original 3. Can people please explain why everyone reckons its the best? I know it has the Hoth fight and the big reveal of Vader/Luke, but overall I dont feel its a very full story and more of a bridge story which isnt so much fun to re-watch a hundred times (unlike the other two).
  • Merchandising! Merchandising! Where the real money from the movie is made!
  • A New Hope never gets old. But damn it, George, damn it.
  • starscream9289
I can never get tired of watching A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back.
  • Back in the 70's and 80's you had to wait on long lines to see a film like Star Wars, Jaws and The Poseidon Adventure. It was fun to do so. The game has changed and not for the better. Almost all films now are one or two week wonders and they never really really have a chance to become a true legend as there gone to fast from theaters. Titanic's and Dark Knight are few and far between. Just WAY too many screens.
Tim Burtons 1989 Batman changed the way films are marketed as Studios put all there bullets into the opening weekend. The business had never been the same since!

  • I just don't see how waiting in a line for a movie helps when you are competing with readily available downloads. Honestly, I hate having to sit in a theater with 14 year old kids. They are only watching half of the movie... the other half of the time, they have their cell phone open. Its blinding light blinds my eyes. I get it, I'm old and it sounds like you're even older and I hate to sound like one of my parents but that's the way it is. I just don't get these kids today.
  • Are you obligated to call it Star Wars IV: A New Hope? I'd think when celebrating the aniversary you'd just call it its original name, Star Wars.
  • bobdisgea
    damn...its a good day.
  • One of the Greatest Film ever made and changed the way films were made. It was a mordern day epic. I always say that Star Wars was the greatest Movie of the 70's. And then Empire Strikes Back changed the way Sequels were made by making them Darking then the first film.
  • Yes, true. Some of my favourite sequels (empire, dark knight, godfather 2) force the story to go through a dark trough. Which I always dig (for some fucked up reason).
  • Bigzilla
Come on, Pete. 32? Not exactly an milestone anniversary.
  • Solid
Oh whatever. It's Star Wars for God's sake. Let the man celebrate its birthday if he wants. I will die loving star wars. It's not only notable for its cinematic success and influence, which is truly amazing, but for igniting the imagination of millions of future film makers that we see delivering movies these days that in my mind wouldn't have happened if not for Star Wars lighting the way. unfortunately all good things come to an end and now I feel like I did back before the prequels came out, back when star wars was just this ancient greek god people used to worship back before i was born... oh well, have fun with the series, next generation...
  • Traie
´The film became a huge success´ is the understatement of all understatements...
  • Just watched A New Hope today and buy coincidence at that.
  • I don't like to buy coincidence. I prefer to rent.

    ^_^
  • I might just watch it tonight in celebration! </wonderingwhyIdonthaveagirlfriend>
  • Wow.. it's been 32 years? Star Wars is such an awesome film.. timeless classic... great characters... good storytelling... I wonder if it'll still hold up in 100 years?
  • CyT
Yeah, if i live to be 125 or so, I guarantee you ill still be 'watching it' whilst connecting my brain into the the 'TV' with full realtime interaction with all of the characters so you feel like you are actually one of the Stormtroopers or Luke himself. Its gonna be awesome.
  • Exactly how I see it. LOL.
  • Gopher
Remember when George Lucas was sane? Those were the days...
  • Calling Star Wars "A New Hope" makes me want to puke.
  • almostinfocus
I would nominate "Jaws" as the first blockbuster. "Star Wars" went on to be bigger in many ways, including total box office and per screen if you want to do the math. But "Jaws" was the first film that took in millions week after week until its total was in the hundreds of millions. Another possible first blockbuster is "The Godfather". I believe it was the first film to cross $100 million at the box office. But "Jaws" was that first summer film that everyone lined up around the block to see and attracted repeat viewings. The "Star Wars" become a merchandising phenomenon and franchise and showed where the real money is.

Let's not forget all those movies that sold quite a few tickets well before the 70's and terms like blockbuster were coined.

But yeah, Star Wars definitely put the whole merchandising thing on the map. For better or worse ...

    What's Star Wars?
  • I was 4 years old when I saw STAR WARS (we were still a couple of years away from A NEW HOPE) in the summer of 1977. I lived in rural Missouri, and the nearest theatre showing it was in St. Louis, nearly an hour and a half away. The two local theatres of course were not showing it. I believe this was several weeks after STAR WARS had originally opened, and lo and behold my family and I didn't have to wait very long after that to see it. Strangely, my two local theatres did not get it. Instead it opened at a theatre which was still about 35 minutes away from where we lived. We went opening night and actually arrived late just as the Star Destroyer flew over chasing the Blockade Runner. We had missed the opening crawl but that didn't matter at the time. For the next two hours I sat and watched without moving, utterly enthralled by what I was seeing. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE has become one of my all time favorite films and I watch at least a couple or more times a year. As better a film as EMPIRE is, A NEW HOPE is just where its at for me. I love it and I always will... Even after the prequels, I have to give George Lucas a big thanks for turning me into a SW fan and also into a fan of great films...

Without A New Hope, there is no Empire. I am a huge, uber fan. In fact as I type this, I'm looking at my framed Polish limited release poster of 'Imperium Kontratajue' or 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Behind me I have a 15 inch voice recognition R2D2, and beside that I have a sculpture of Ralph Mcquarries concept art depicting Vader vs. Luke at Cloud City. It's the one where Luke is wearing an oxygen mask. My screen saver on my computer is a 3D rotating AT-AT...yeh i'm a fan.
I am so disappointed in the direction Star Wars went, but it forever reigns as the supreme being in opening up my imagination. When a movie made 32 years ago, well before the invention of green screen can still set the standard and draw comparisons to current films like Star Trek, then you know it did something right. Thanks for paying homage Peter, just don't do this when the anniversary of the Christmas Special comes around..=)

It's not 'A New Hope'; it's not 'Episode IV'; the title is Star Wars.
