james_and_his_powersuit

Marketsaw, the number one Avatar obsessives to hold a blogspot account in all of this world, have posted an image of what to my eye appears to be a Powersuit from James Cameron’s upcoming epic. You can see part of the picture up above and the whole thing is below the break. Jim at Marketsaw was asking for somebody to comment and name the image, so I thought I’d oblige. What jolly japes.

Previously, Marketsaw received and published what ultimately turned out to be the very first confirmed image of the Na’vi, the alien species at the heart of the movie’s storyline. I think Marketsaw have got a really good track record with this film and as such, I trust the image is one hundred percent real.

Apparently, these 14-feet tall Powersuits are worn by human troopers on the surface of alien planet Pandora. One sequence is going to show a group of Powersuited troopers, led by Matt Gerald’s Corporal Lyle Waynefleet, laying waste to a Na’vi village, torching it with flamethrowers and even causing civilian casualties.

I’m utterly convinced that Avatar is going to deliver an incredible experience to audiences, even in 2D but particularly in 3d. And it should be a unique experience too, so if I were to compare certain elements of the film to Cameron’s own Aliens it definitely wouldn’t be to criticise it. You have to admit, though, these Powersuits are mighty reminiscent of the loader device Ripley used to take care of the queen in the airlock sequence.

Who knows when we’re going to see a trailer for this film? The rumours of an early teaser coming with Transformers 2 have been refuted, and seem to have originated in a simple misunderstanding over the Last Airbender teaser which will make its debut in that slot.

  • This film will be freaking Awesome. This looks gritty, powerful and yet strangely...graceful? Maybe its the curved feet and finger like gripping claws. Cannot wait for this.

The sequence described above about powersuited troopers laying waste to an alien village sounds nearly identical to the opening scene in Starship Troopers (the book, not the film)
  • I didn't read the book what is the difference between the book and the movie? more humanoid aliens?
  • The book is right wing propoganda, the film is ABOUT right wing propoganda and is, at the end of the day, fairly liberal satire.
  • The book is right wing propaganda, the film is ABOUT right wing propaganda and is, at the end of the day, fairly liberal satire.
  • A book that depicts devotion, honor and duty to your country...."Right wing propaganda".

How dare you say this, on Memorial Day, no less. You should be ashamed of yourself. This dirt that you're throwing is from a hole that you're only digging yourself deeper into.

    Sounds like left wing vitriol.

Pretty much the entire film creates it's own relationships and narrative. It's definitely inspired by the novel, but Verhoeven (sp) made his own thing. Yes, that powersuit scene is missing (think Star Trek's space jump done in those bigass suits), and if I recall correctly, the ST suits had a bit of jetpack to them that allowed the troops to jump buildings and such. THey were loaded with every weapon that a good human tank might need.

Also, Rico's father plays a much bigger role, condemning his choice to join the military, and later, joining himself to serve with Rico.

Heinlein's novel is overrated. It has extended excerpts of politicizing that take most of the fun out of experience. Perhaps, that was my mindframe while reading, but I'll take the over-the-top camp of the film if given a choice. That isn't to say that the book shouldn't inspire other things, because it has that energy, but it doesn't really have a strong enough narrative to be filmed faithfully.

If anyone is curious about Heinlein, I highly recommend reading The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Brilliant novel that holds up very well over the time since written. Mycroft Holmes is one of the best AI characters you will ever find. I don't doubt that this story will someday find its way to film.

    yes
  • "...laying waste to a Na’vi village, torching it with flamethrowers and even causing civilian casualties."

    O.o

Yeah, cause those 'non-civilian casualties' are so much better. :p
  • it's a movie with factious creatures and characters getting killed... I mean nobody shed a tear for all the orcs who died in the Lord of The Rings trilogy...lol..it's make believe it's where we should be able to enjoy violence...
  • I love how they both missed your point.
  • I know.

Can you hear that? That's the sound of it going over their heads at super sonic speed!

    vvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

"We pose no threat to them. It would like us going out of our way to destroy a few microbes on some ant hill in Africa.
Interesting analogy. And how guilty would we feel if we went and destroyed a few microbes on an ant hill in Africa?"
  • +1 for the 'Contact' quote. B)
  • Listen, I'm the biggest pacifist you will ever meet but the point is here's a sequence of civillian slaughter in a mainstream US action film. This is going to be powerful and striking stuff.
  • Anxiously waiting for the trailer!

All I know is that CGI is progressing in terms of being an inch close to "the uncanny valley". The rate of advancement has been incredible in my opinion. This even feels more eminent with the impending release of Cameron's "Avatar".

You guy's should check out the sfx companies working together on this project. Its a dream team. With the brilliant technical innovation and directing chops that Cameron brings on to the project working with the likes of Gentle Giant Studios, Halon Entertainment, Hydraulx, Industrial Light & Magic, Stan Winston Studio, Weta Digital will make this the "big" deal that everyone who's seen the movie has stated.

Again I'm not trying to completely fall into the hype spiral but with a team like that, I wouldn't expect them to deliver anything less than a visually stunning piece of work .

    Here's hoping for the best.
  • luckly we have a site like MarketSaw dedicated to Avatar... since 20th Century Fox doesn't believe in advertising or marketing this film....we can't just assume this thing is going to be amazing they need to show us stills from the actual film or a teaser trailer....there should be at least 2mins of footage ready to be shown at this point...I know they want to create buzz at Comic-Con but what about the rest of us? they'll show footage to the people there and then what? I don't want have to resort to watching grainy bootlegged footage on youtube like I did for Wolf Man and Watchmen....

the above image is interesting and I keep getting an Aliens vibe from what has been pieced together....I loved the world he created with that film
  • Aaron
From what I've heard the guys at Weta are behind schedule. Believe me, Fox would market the movie now if they had enough material for a trailer. And in any case the lack of footage doesn't seem to be hurting the anticipation much.
  • it's just pissing off the only people who know about the film..I mean I've been wondering why they can't release stills from the human scenes with the non-green screen...all the live action stuff wrapped back in 2007...why only behind the scenes pictures? it's so dull and doesn't get me the least bit excited about the movie, if anything it's annoying/disappointing...it wouldn't be hard to release images of the human actors like Sam Worthington or Weaver in costume during a scene...without Cameron in the shot of course...
  • Need trailer noooowww
  • Weyland_Yutani
A new James Cameron film. That is really all I need to be excited for Avitar. I can't wait.

I love that they have been able to hold off the prying eyes of the internet. If I had my way, which is nearly impossible, I'd know next to nothing going in.
  • Everyone is speaking so highly of this movie and I want a trailer, heck even a 10 second teaser. I'm really interested in seeing this movie but if I don't see something soon other then these pictures, I'll go mad.
  • is this just another post that just asks another question about avatar? why yes, yes it is ...(sigh)
  • With a picture that MIGHT be an answer?
  • With a picture that MIGHT (read: IS, I think, but I'm being 1% cautious) be an answer?
  • Drbendy
I really wouldn't get your hopes up. The way this film has been hyped, we all expect to fire a concentrated ray straight into our third eye. Just think of Zemekis, If anyone knew the magnitude of this new cinema Cameron would understand it. However i just think we expect this film to be as vivid as dreams, while the reality will be like everything else of the past ten years, a graphic demo with a story that makes milk sour. I'm so excited by the possibilities this film promises, it's only going to be a disappointment. I just proof read this post and it might as well be written by a drunk ape. Apologies bandwidth.
  • Holy fucking shit I love the makeover slashfilm. Plus I'm psyched for Avatar.
  • ziggi
im just interested in seeing what kind of film cameron can make
after not doing a scripted piece for such a long while.
  • CyT
I think we can all rely on James Cameron. The hype is starting to border on the ridiculous, but when you think of Terminator 2 and Aliens and, *whispers* Titanic, you do kind of feel a bubble of butterflies start in your stomach. Could this really be that next time your sitting in the cinema with your mouth slackly fallen open as you live in a completely different world for an hour or two? I really, really hope so.
  • Cat
I loved the machine ripley was using aliens and it doeslook like it but that's all we get? Cameron is holding out.
  • Hype bordering on the ridiculous when it comes to AVATAR? Really? You know this film will jump off the screen and kill you if you don't like it right? Well, so be it. Two weekends a go a friend of mine was shown footage from the film showing some soldiers with big guns destroying something on Pandora as well as scenes showing Pandora's vistas. His response was that it just looked "okay" and ultimately he felt that a lot of what he saw looked like the visuals in the Japanese film, Casshern. He was left feeling that this film will not be the be all end all that it has been hyped to be. However, that doesn't mean, he said, it won't be a great film. He said he was only shown FX footage, some it still incomplete, and nothing about the plot or characters. We'll see...
  • sunshine
    when does it come out
  • alwayssts
I thought Casshern was pretty cool, and it was made for only $6M. This has roughly 32x the budget, with (then) no-name actors, meaning the money on the effects is going to be enormous. If we get that style through the screen of ILM/Legacy Studios etc., with this story, I can see it being THE next big great epic experience. If it's a trilogy, it could be career defining,as it will be completely his. Not a sequel, not a dramatic take on a historical occurrence, his.

Not to mention, Sam Worthington is going places. Very psyched.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Well, there is this thing called Terminator (and T2) that is pretty much his. I'd say he has plenty to hang his hat on already.
Leave the sequels and trilogies to other people. I'd like to see Cameron just move forward to his next thing. Perhaps, if something like Avitar is a good film, it will demand a sequel and, if he has more to say, Cameron will come back to it when he is ready. Meanwhile, on to something new.

I'm glad we have a few very competent directors out there that aren't sucked into the trilogy culture that has spawned in Hollywood.
  • Dan W
Looks like what we are mostly seeing is the "hip" and left leg and most of the left arm of the suit.

I need some moving footage NOW!!!
  • Johan
Yeah, and that´s why I think they are hiding something too spoilerish to be shown right now. I think that source is quite close to Cameron himself and that the image has been aproved of somehow.
  • I want to see a damn trailer already. Cannot wait to see this film.

Kind of reminds me of the powersuits found in the animated movie Appleseed and Appleseed Saga: Ex Machina.
  • I say that such a life that 'speed is your life what would you do ahaha cooL
  • Simon
I don't want to see the trailer, I want to see that film.
  • Johan
Pure Jim Cameron! More excited than ever. Love the gritty "hard scifi" look of that thing. I´m starting to form an image of what to expect from Avatar. It is true that the design of the military hardware seem similar to Aliens, which isn´t bad at all, but I guess that the Pandora parts of the movie and all the exotic creatures and the Navis themselves will be totally original and as mind blowing as they say.
  • Dan W
Yes I love the gritty and non flashy sci fi that cameron likes to bring out. I feel that it is more realistic than super flashy beautiful looking ships
  • Alright already. Enough pics and second-hand accounts.....it's high time we got a friggin' trailer already...
  • Amit
wow its a machine that looks like one quarter the size of the other machine movie due to be released in july.....HAS to be the best movie everrrrr......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • RPK
This movie's hype will devour all in it's wake!!@#@$#
  • I am holding my enthusiasm until I see a trailer. That is final.
  • Chris

Righhttttt and a friend of mine has seen some footage of Iron Man 2 and given a sneak peek at the next Batman film too!

These "my friend saw some footage" type of posts when no one has seen a damn thing yet, are truly fucking hysterical.
  • I can't wait for this. It's been a great sci-fi year so far, with the new Trek and Terminator, and even online. The guys at Pryamids of Mars finally got around to posting the last chapter of their awesome web comic. That will have to hold me until Mr. C unleashes his latest (and I hope Greatest).
  • John Hansen
Hey, I thought he was making Titanic 2 - Back to the surface!
