Speaking to the Guardian Guide, a pull out supplement that comes with every Saturday’s issue of The Guardian newspaper here in the UK, Dan Aykroyd has revealed even more details of the upcoming third Ghostbusters film.

Here’s the big quote from the man himself, detailing some of the new ideas we can look forward to:

There’ll be a whole new generation that has to be trained and a leader that you’ll all love when you meet her. There’ll be lots of cadets, boys and girls who’ll be learning how to use the neuron splitter and the inter-planet interceptor - new tools to enable them to slip from dimension to dimension.

I’d imagine this female leader would be the role Aykroyd has previously expressed (a personal) interest in the casting of Eliza Dushku and Alyssa Milano for. You can infer from the comment that we’ll “all” love her that she’s probably not going to be a shrinking violet.

As for the gadget, to me this inter-planet interceptor brings back memories of Aykroyd’s own attempt, a few years back, to mount a third Ghostbusters film. Here’s Aykroyd’s own explanation of that old idea, as reported by Peter in February 2007:

I wrote a script called Hell Bent, Ghostbusters go to hell basically. The premise is that it’s Manhellton. There’s Manhattan and ManHELLton. And if you can build an inter-dimensional phase system so that you can go from one dimension to another. We’ve succeeded doing that and we go to the hell side.

Back to the new approach, and Aykroyd also mentions that Bill Murray’s condition for returning was that Ernie Hudson’s previously underwritten role as Winston Zeddemore would be beefed up to put him on equal footing with the others. A class move, Mr. Murray.

Aykroyd also notes to the Guide reporter that he has two new big ideas of his own:

I have what I think are two great cool science fiction stories myself right now and I think I’m gonna skip the movies altogether and find some gamers, maybe go with these guys again. I’ll just give them the scripts and say, ‘pretend this movie got made’.

Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky have been writing the new film - and judging from his comments, sharing every draft with Aykroyd. Production is apparently possible for the end of the year, so a Summer 2011 launch isn’t too unlikely.

  • He goes into this in a bit more depth in the soon to hit newsstands issue of Empire.
  • rnl
    that sounds f-ing awful
  • Solid
I'm waiting for them to announce shia labeof as a new gb... But I liked blues brothers 2000 so maybe I'll like this too. *shrugs*
  • Marko
I'm confused. This quote is the EXACT same quote we had from Dan Akroyd reported here back on April 14th except replacing "meet him" with "meet her".
  • This is WORD FOR WORD what The Guide reported. So... either Aykroyd is very good at repeating himself, or he's issuing press releases that he tweeks instead of doing interviews.

Or there's been a weird coincidence...?
  • makes me happy to hear what Bill Murray did for Ernie Hudson
  • Biggles12
Sounds bad. No need for another film. Keep it in the gaming world and come up with a totally new idea besides flogging Ghostbuters.
  • if eliza dushku is the leader of the ghostbusters, i'm going to hurt myself and anyone standing near me when i find out. i hate how this movie sounds already, leave it alone.
  • Edward
ditto. honestly, I know this francise is aykroyd's baby and all but he's really gotta take a step back for a moment. he knows just how beloved the franchise is but he's totally failing to see that everyone(and I mean everyone) thinks dushku/milano is an awful idea. the ghostbusters always had a great comidic, childlike innocence about themselves, huson being the straight man. throwing in some hardass(which is all dushku can play) will throw it all off completely.
atleast in the past ramis/ reitman have be able to talk him out of crazier things so maybe theres hope?
  • Edward
see? it sucks so bad that I cant even type correctly.
  • REAL6
Samboni, i feel the same and Murray gets loads of more respect for that!!!
  • Edward
tina fey is the only woman that could ever pull off being a ghostbuster
  • vva
The whole crew of Ghostbusting, like the fire department, was the original idea that Aykroyd wrote for the first Ghostbusters movie. The script started with Ghostbusters already established as a full blown corporation training new Ghostbusters everyday. Ultimately, it cost too much at the time. Sounds like they're using some of those ideas.
  • bigal
actually dude the origanl script that aykrod wrote was them being in space but rietman had them change the script because he wanted a more earthly feel
  • Moviola
I'd like to see something of Ghostbusters pushing the comedy more and less action and gadgets. For some reason, the idea of mixing Reno 911 and Ghostbusters sounds appealing to me. Not a movie about training Ghostbusters so much as ordinary people working the job day to day. This may be counter to the original film, but I don't think that level of comedy mixed with action can be repeated. A new direction would be more interesting.
  • moranis
The 'beef up Ernie Hudson's role' bit is being misreported; that is a reference to the video game not the movie.

Also as much as I like Eliza Dushku for a bit of television eye candy she is TOTALLY WRONG for the Ghostbusters universe.

If they wanna bring in a girl GB that can throw verbal zingers as well as proton beams may I suggest LIZZY CAPLAN from Cloverfield, Freaks & Geeks and the exceptional Party Down.
  • It sounds like they have forgotten who the real fans are. That's alright... I can skip this movie and be happy with the ending of 2. I don't need another sequel. I hope it works out for them, I think the original cast is great and I have a lot of respect for them.
  • Am I the only one who completely hated Ghostbusters? Not even for it's time. It was terrible.

Mind you, you are entitled to like it and I respect that. Go ahead, we all have different opinions but UGH.
  • drbenway
Yes. You are the only one.
  • Agreed, definitely the only one. Even if you don't like it, how can you claim it's terrible?
  • Jared
for a new ghostbuster period all I'm gonna say is JEMAINE CLEMENT!!!!
  • That's a really interesting idea.
  • It would no doubt be funny but I'd much rather get a Flight of the Conchords film.
  • Merciful_budah
I'm just imagining Aykroyd trying to teach him how to use the particle accelerator. There's no way that scene wouldn't be funny. Don't know how well he would work for the whole movie, but you never know.
  • sdfsdaf
Why can't this movie just be about four old guys who have to kill a really bad ass ghost. I don't need Eleiza Duckscccu and Alissa Milano doing backflips and saying cool one-liners to make me happy.
  • Bryan
I'll be honest...that just sounds terrible.
  • Enthropii
Awesome. I'm prayin for Eliza. I can't tstand Alyssa Milano for more than 42 minutes at a time.

And cool one by Murray. Ernie Hudson deserves a starring role/
  • Aykroyd does a lot of talking here as someone not Harold Ramis or the screenwriters...I take what he says with a grain of salt...from what I gather he's talking to news outlets to gather more interest in the project and his alcohol labels...so the studio moves up the production start date...the end of the year sounds like a hopeful thing they don't have a cast or even a director at this point...I'll believe this when they start making official announcements..summer 2011 sounds about right, I just hope it's not a Christmas themed sequel that would more than likely ruin it....when Aykroyd mentions a winter shoot it's the first thing I thought of...
  • Well as I mentioned this is similar to whats in Empire except with the addition of Ramis who discusses directing.
  • SOS
"There’ll be lots of cadets, boys and girls"

    ...like Police Academy?!?!?! *shivers*
  • Merciful_budah
That was what came to my mind too.
  • Dannymanners
I was so excited when I heard Ghostbusters III was happening. But I imagined a Rocky Balboa type movie - involving aging ghostbusters and a final showdown type thing. This new idea sounds TERRIBLE. It sounds more like Men in Black 2 than anything else. It is being made to make toys by the sound of it.

....dont get me wrong - the ghostbusters in hell idea sounds terrible too. But if I had to choose ....
  • Both Eliza and Milano are complete talent vacuums. This would be a great opportunity to give Kristin Wiig that big role she has coming to her.
  • Cabbausio
Elizabeth Banks would be a great Ghostbuster.
  • Branden
I don't know. I would love another GB, but I hope they won't eff it up.
  • Merciful_budah
I think the thing that works most against this movie is the fact that so many people have different ideas of what it should be like. Aykroyd wants to go to the next level (or a couple levels above it) scientifically. The executives are going to want simple and bankable (hell they'd probably just prefer a remake of the first one) that they can reinvigorate the property with. Sigourney Weaver wants Oscar to be in it and Bill Murray kind of seems to not even want to do it (I guess money fixed that though).

I have high hopes that this can be good, I'm not gonna discount it based on any casting quite yet because you never know when an actor or actress is going to surprise you, although as soon as I hear that Lil Wayne or Ludarcis was cat in this I am so gone. I hope Ivan Reitman comes back to direct it. His track record has severely declined since the 80's (Evolution being the best thing he's directed since Kindergarten Cop) but I would rather have him direct it and do a bad job then see a ghostbusters film through some new director's eyes. At least if Reitman does it, it will still be a ghostbusters film (sort of like how the second one went. By the end of it you're like "What the hell was that?" but you're still chuckling at some of the Bill Murray bits).

  • Just make it good. That's all I ask.
  • Moranis above was spot on with the reference about Aykroyd talking about the upcoming GB video game...

All of this talk is about the video game and not the third film. It's confusing because Aykroyd sees the video game as the third film but the game is actually a lead in of sorts to the third film...

Take a look at this article from CHUD in April. It should clear everything up:
    http://www.chud.com/articles/articles/18933/1/AYK...

I could be wrong though. I think the key here is that we won't know what the truth is until the game is launched and the script is done.

IMO, they aren't going to mess up the third film with any of the rumers that are circling aroudn now...
  • I really hope this film is great, but it sounds terrible so far. The original outline for the Ghostbusters Go To Hell film, which was originally set to be part 3, sounded like a bad idea. And from what I'm hearing so far this doesn't sound any better.

Still, maybe a half decent Ghostbusters film is better than none at all? And at least we get to hear that theme tune again. :)
  • I'm optimistic with the writers from the Office working on the script. As for new female Ghostbusters, how about Amy Poehler along with the previously mentioned Tina Fey. These are two of our outstanding female comedy talents who can play both smart and goofy. Jeannine Garafalo would also be a great choice - she played a similar type role (as part of a crime fighting team) in Mystery Men and was amusing.

could it be Akyroyd is just using diversionary talk? He probably knows how GB fans would salivating at the prospect of a third movie and is probably throwing everybody off by speaking doublespeak. Afterall, he and his producers probably want to keep the plot development super top secret. I truly believe he will bring the whole gang back with Weaver and the Oscar character grown up. I envision Oscar and Dana going through the typical teen angst driven mom-child relationship issues and as a result the stress and tension thereby creates "side effects" such as Oscar getting stuck in a different realm and Dana running to the gang for help. A new female GB character could be ( Ray as recently widowered and still grieving ) Ray's teenage daughter (Amanda Bynes or someone with her comedic timing) along for the ride who eventually gets sucked in the realm and runs into Oscar...and well...you can pretty much figure out the rest..
