plummer_parnassus

Three new video clips from Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus have appeared on the Comme Au Cinema site and have also been embedded below the break in this story. One of them features a scene we’ve seen already - twice before, in fact - but now finally in what would appear to be the correct aspect ratio. The others are new, however, and show us both storylines and special effects that the first clip didn’t even hint at.

As well as showcasing Heath Ledger as Tony, the clips give us a very good look at Andrew Garfield as Anton, Lily Cole as Valentina and - best of all - Christopher Plummer as the titular doctor.

Here’s that first clip, once more. This sequence was filmed in the Leadenhall Market in London, another shopping mall movie pilgrimage I can make after I’ve finally managed to see the Monroeville zombie nexus.

In this second clip, Anton and Valentina take centre stage. Verne Troyer gets a line as Percy, but I think we’ve yet to see a real indication of how he’s going to come over in the film. From the screenplay he seems to have a small but key role as a kind of holy fool, for the most part commenting on the action rather than driving it forward.

This final clip centres on the doctor. My favourite of the three, it also shows the impressively conceived FX work of a key flashback scene. There’s something of the Peter Jackson about the final swooping “crane shot”, but it is brilliantly choreographed storytelling in its own right. Much of the FX work was carried out by Peerless, the company Gilliam originally set up with supervisor Kent Houston to supply shots for Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The shots you see inside the travelling Imaginarium wagon were reportedly filmed in an actual, working prop-set at actual scale. Without the really rather wide lenses that Gilliam favours it would have been impossible.

All looks great, I think you’ll agree.

  • whoaaaa....this looks soooo coool!!!
  • D-Dumbledore?

Yeah, hahaha. S'what I thought too. Anyways, looks to be a good film.

That's the first thing I thought when I saw that picture!

    Great clips btw!
  • stz
    looks excellent !
  • Oh so very Münchhausen. All hail the return of Sir Gilliam Fantastique!
  • Ryan McCarthy
Fingers are crossed that this makes a domestic release and... WITHOUT BACKLASH FROM ANY CRITIC. Every shot so far has Gilliam tone written all over it

First, if your familiar with Gilliam and his work then you wont be surprised with his films and sense of vision and mood. Second, the main actor died and the film still has a pulse, due to being a Gilliam film.
Finally, Gilliam gets him film released at Cannes and with some lackluster reviews..
We shall see what happens to another Gilliam Film.
    Thanks /film

I Gilliam take it you Gilliam like Gilliam? Gilliam-Gilliam.
  • Looks good, but the reviews have been mixed so we'll see. Have faith in ye Gilliam.
  • Brendon is right, last clip is the best. Thanks for these! They all look great. Only thing even slightly underwhelming? Lily Cole. But it's not much to judge from, and honestly she seemed alright, just not great.
  • not so sure about the 2nd or 3rd clips.. but i love the first one. the handheld wide shots are perfect.. it actually feels like a real show being put on in the middle of this town. i also like how its not some dude standing center stage shouting 'step right up!!! bla bla'.. it opens with him chillin on the side of the stage playing a flute like this is just another day at work. sooo good.
i still dont have a clue what the plot is, but i'm excited for it.
  • It very much feels like a classic gilliam film. I see bits from 12 monkey's, munchhausen, brazil. It will be interesting how smoothly the difficulty's of making this film translate into a compelling movie that we all know gilliam is very capable of pulling off.
  • This movie looks so damn beautiful. I absolutely loved "Twelve Monkeys" I think its one of Gilliam's best. Truly an underrated film imo.

Anyway this movie looks awesome. Definitely watching this one.

  • Man, Heath Ledger was becoming a really good actor. I always wondered if his performance as The Joker was a fluke, but this proves it wasn't. :(

This is looking great. I might be alone, but think that it will be very cool to see all of the actors portray the character. It's something that Gilliam would probably try on his own volition if he ever thought he could ever get away with it. We know that wasn't his choice here, but I have a feeling it is going to work.

I'd believe Lily Cole is only 12...or even 16. It's hard to believe by looking at her here that she is 21. Personally, I like what I'm seeing from her.

  • "16, the age of consent" you little slut.

I hate this website. You distill something that takes so much effort down to comments like "this sucks" and "this is going to be so cool!" Wow. It's good to know the integrity of /Film is based on what a bunch of children think.
Start the negative thumbs. Doesn't matter; I'm done reading this site.
    Sheep.
  • You're right, we should all be beret-wearing cineastes who love Francois Truffaut and are all about nonconformism. Congratulations, you're an angsty twelfth grader who's trying to sound smart!

I get congratulations for being "an angsty twelfth grader who's trying to sound smart?" Well, thanks!
And you totally nailed what I was really getting at! I expect /Film to be "all about" Francois Truffaut! Gosh, I sure am glad you were here to reinterpret my initial comments.
The flock has found its shepherd! Hooray!

    "...impressively concieved FX..."

    '''...brilliantly choreographed storytelling..."

Doesn't sound like "sucks!" or "this looks cool!" to me. Sounds like one of /film's journalists providing his well-written, well-thought out opinion of a film that you obviously care about enough to check out. In case you aren't intelligent enough to understand what I jst said, let me rephrase it for you: Shut the fuck up.

I never said I have a problem with the editorials.
My gripe is the message boards.
But I'll shut the fuck up now.

welcome to the internet. is this your first visit? perhaps you'd prefer browsing AICNs talk back. they're really polite and intellectual over there....

    From GlenGary Glen Ross:
Tony Roma: "Is this your farewell to the troops?"

Hopefully you're done writing on this site too!
  • This looks like vintage Gilliam. I may have just jizzed in my pants.
  • GregoryV
Did I just noticed product placement from Prada? Sorry, I had to throw that in there. lol. It's like one of those close up cell phone shot in films.
  • whsmith
Siskel and Ebert both gave Brazil thumbs down back in the day - I never trust critics take on Gilliam
  • Frank
The first clip seems to be paying homage to Kubrick.
  • Lisa
i don't know that it looks to good and i soo wanted it to be an oscar winner for heath's last performance
  • Lisa
I am sooooo sad hat Heath is gone, i adored him heaps!! But you can't be sad that he's gone you have to be happy that he was alive at all. He's probably in heaven feeling proud, watching down with a smile that he isn't forgotten.
  • Those clips are such a tease! I cannot wait to see this film and hope that we all get a chance to see it on the big screen.
  • Gilliam the madman of the fantastica is back! The Dream merchant! The original dreamer against all odds, finally rises above all gravity!
