zuko_comparison

The first official images from M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender appeared yesterday when US Today presented stills of Noah Ringer as Aang and Dev Patel as the ‘evil’ Zuko . I think that the first unofficial image of Zuko is much better however. I’ve presented a little of it above, with the whole thing lurking below the break.

I had the picture e-mailed to me overnight, without any explanation or fanfare. I’d reckon that it’s a screen capture from the teaser trailer. That teaser is due to unspool before Transformers 2 so the encode for online has doubtlessly already been done and I’d eat my shoe if that wasn’t the source of this image.

Comparing live action Zuko to animated Zuko, as I have attempted to facilitate in the image at the top of the post, you will spot a couple of immediate differences: the top knot is gone and the scar seems less pronounced, more realistic.

That the scar has been scaled back seems reasonable and fair and shouldn’t cause too much contrvoersy. I bet the top knot will be subject to more consternation however. Seeing as there’s little reason to avoid the hairstyle other than simple, aesthetic preference, the purists might find it hard to swallow.

The full image, seen here, not only gives you a look at Zuko’s costume and posture, it reveals all of those out of focus characters in the background. It also seems to promise that the teaser is going to feature some nice, strong shots from the film and not just graphics, title cards or silhouetted close-ups. Some teasers really do tease too much, I feel.

zuko

Is Zuko named after Danny in Grease? That’d be amusing (well, to me at least). The character has a really great arc on the TV show and I think Dev Patel will have a lot of fun should this run to a full trilogy. Heck - I think I’ll have a lot of fun if this runs to a trilogy. Keep your Shyamalan hate, haters. I think he’s one of the best working filmmakers in the US, if not the world.

Got any more Airbender pictures? I’d love to see them.

Update: Thanks to Keisha at Avatar Destiny Portal [http://avatardestinyportal.com] the full size picture of Dev as Zuko is now even more full sized.

Hey Brendon, what would you do for a Klondike bar?
  • Flaco
I with you, M.Night is one of the best directors, I've loved all of his movies. Even lady in the water and The Happening.

Thing is, he is original. i wish i could say the same for many other directors out there.

Oh, and I care not for what anyone has to say against my opinion.
  • andrew
yes he is original, but he is taking it to the point of stupidity. he can be good. i loved signs. he's using his talents less than he used to.
  • Birch
His first three films were great. His last 3 were terrible (each was worse than the last).

This seems to be a drastic change for him and it's well overdue.

"oh I care not for what anyone has to say against my opinion."

Way to be open to criticism. He is not one of the best all be it that he is a very innovative director but he has lost the ability to deliver a good story since the 6th sense. And so far every picture I see from this movie makes me want to cry. I fear he is going to ruin Avatar like other directors have ruined other live action renditions of cartoons....*cough* Dragonball *cough*

I can barely see the scar, but I guess that way it IS more realistic. But the topknot in the show is a symbol of them being part of the Fire Nation. Although through most of the 2nd and 3rd season he doesn't have it, that's because he was a fugitive. So the topknot, while seeming to be for pure aesthetic reasons, is actually a major point in the character's development. But I'm interested to see how they pull of the movie. At least they don't have Jesse McCartney anymore.
  • hmm...makes sense he doen't have the topnot because his ethnicity and culture is completely different, but the scar isn't more realistic because it's less severe. burn victims don't all look that pretty. plus he has a left eyebrow! one eyebrow for zuko, dammit :P
  • Tollivandi
I agree with you COMPLETELY. Zuko's scar is a very important part of his character, much more so than his topknot! That picture makes it kinda look...I dunno, like he's been rubbing at it too much, not like he's been through an emotionally and physically traumatizing experience.

"That the scar has been scaled back seems reasonable and fair and shouldn’t cause too much contrvoersy."

How little he knows the Avatar fandom (and nice typo).
  • tom.
Yea, it looks like his father just held a candle under his eye for a couple of seconds.
  • I guess Dev didn't want to shave his hair? Teaser will be out shortly so I'll reserve ranting til then.

"I think he’s one of the best working filmmakers in the US, if not the world."
    You're a funny guy, Brendon!
  • first impression is he looks silly to someone who hasnt seen the source material (that would be me)...
But I am guessing it will work fine in context of the movie
  • Yeah, same here. I'm also wondering if the alien that took over Shyamalan during The Happening has now found another host.
  • The Fire Nation is using the battle Helmets from Gladiator, Sweet. They should make Zuko kinda like Two-Face. It looks like he has sunburn rather then a scar. Dev probably didn't want to shave his head. Remember he was a Slumdog that became a millionaire. So he too good to shave his head.
  • "I think he’s one of the best working filmmakers in the US, if not the world."
why do you always make these bold claims but never back them up?
shyamalan is getting worse and worse with every film he does. lady in the water and the happening are fucking trash. i'm just out of film school and i swear to god i could direct both of those better then he did. he is a joke.. not one of the best directors in the world. give me a fucking break. he's somewhat original but mediocre at very best.
  • Andrew
They're not making any sequels, it's only going to be one movie.

Yeah, I have a feeling this won't turn out great.
  • they are planning sequels
  • Ezekial
I'm actually okay with this ;P
  • All I have to say is: "Why Dev? WHY?!"
  • Tercotta
    Ca-Ching!!!
  • MarkTheseWords
everyone should remember that M. Night's Directing always has been and always will be strong, where he faltered is in his writing. Thank god he's not writing this one, I've always thought he should have stopped writing after The Village and put his strong directing skills into other peoples ideas, cuz his ideas have gone down the pipes....yay for M.Night not writing his own stuff anymore!!!
  • If I had any complaints against his looks in this movie, they have been blown away with this pic, he looks quite mean as well...I'll give him a chance, I think he did great in Slumdog and he should do well in this movie.
  • Alright, now everybody's thinking 'You know, Shymalan isn't so bad'. The trailer might appeal to everyone. Set reports will sound promising. Then the movie will come out, people will lash out and all of a sudden Shymalan isn't such a swell guy.

Don't worry M. Night, McG knows exactly how to deal with this.
  • Love the the design of his armor. Its an awesome mix of various Eastern style armors and those of the Roman Empire.

This picture looks pretty good. I'm guessing this is near the beginning while Zuko infiltrates a Water Tribe camp.
  • The guys behind Dev kinda remind me of Russians. I do like the armor but the cartoon kinda made it like the fire nation armors were Samurais. I like the design of these one better.

I still think that his face should look alittle like Two-Face, but this hasn't had the FX put into it yet. I'll leave the rest of my judgement for the Teaser.
  • Alex
The problem with looking like Roman Empire armor is it doesn't fit within the world of Avatar.

East and South Asian and indigenous cultures gave the world its beautiful diversity. It should have translated into this movie without any changes.
  • Kartos
Yeah, who cares about the source material, or colors for the costumes.
  • Dev Patel is the only one who gives me hope for this project, especially after seeing thier choice for Aang.
  • endorian
First impression - why is this looking more like "King Arthur" (2004) sequel than an Avatar movie ?!?!?!?!!?!?!??!
It has nothing to do with the original... the colors, the style of the clothes, helmets, hair.... everything is f.... ing wrong!
  • I think the scar looks like lazy make-up and it definitely should be more pronounced. I can forgive the top knot, but the scar is a big part of Zuko's past. Aside from that the picture above is not terrible in fact it kind of makes me feel like maybe this won't turn out to be a horrible cheesy affair. I would love to be wrong and have this film turn out to be a good adaptation of the animated series.
  • "I think he’s one of the best working filmmakers in the US, if not the world."

seriously? I really don't see it. what's you rationale? 6th sense (and maybe signs) is the only good movie he's made.
  • Bull
Haha, I agree. I know he has talent but holy shit, I can think of 20 better directors just off the top of my head. His new stuff has absolutely sucked.
  • shadow
I love the boom mic in the shot on the bottom image. It's on a white background guys, open photoshop, select it, and hit delete. Problem solved.
  • CoShef
It really amazes me that they couldn't find a single Chinese person to play Zuko or Aang, or a single Inuit actor to play Sokka or Ktara. Seriously. Cultural elements like that were fundamental to the show.

Plus, what was up with Aang's tattoos in the earlier photo? They're barely visible!
  • ? whats that?
  • mixmasterangel
lets put mr shamalamayan and mr eli roth on a boat trip to somalia pleaseee XD
  • I think Patel would have looked ridiculous with the topknot.

First McCartney and now Patel. Both wrong
They could have found an East Asian to play Zuko rather than cast a British Indian.
  • dee
I don't know, I get a dragonball Evolution vibe from looking at that pic.
  • mr. shoe-eater
    time to eat your shoe.
