Terminator Salvation - What Did You Think?

terminator salvation tunnel

McG’s Terminator Salvation hits theaters tomorrow, and so far it seems like the reaction is violently mixed. I screened the film earlier this week, and hope to write a review over the weekend, or maybe even appear on the /Filmcast, but here are my quick thoughts. If you’re expecting the movie to reach the bar set by Terminator and T2, you need to lower your expectations. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed this movie. The franchise does get Salvation, as the title implies, and the film is a HUGE improvement over Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

The action scenes are pretty damn cool, with McG paying homage to Children of Men/Alfonso Curon with a series of one-shot single camera sequences (which obviously aren’t one-shot, but stitched together in post) that will have you drooling. That said, the character development is almost non existent, the pacing is a mess and the dialogue could’ve been written by a 10-year-old. Overall, I enjoyed the film.

I know I might be in the minority. I understand how people might not think this is a good movie, but I’m surprised at some of the violently negative reaction the film has gotten in some of the early reviews. I think general audiences will like this film a lot more than critics. The film is getting an 8.4 out of 10 on IMDb with over 2000 votes (I expect this to go  down to the 6.5-7.5 range) but only 34% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. I have compiled a bunch of excerpts from the early reviews after the jump.

Seven Movie Review Excerpts:

Screenrant: “Terminator Salvation is great for the don’t-expect-much-except-action-out-of-a-summer-movie crowd, not so great if you’re looking for a worthy successor to the first two films.”

InContention: “The film sucks inspiration out of the viewer in a staggering fashion.  It disavows intriguing ideas explored in the franchise to date and renders a potentially exciting re-launch of the material impotent and meaningless.  It is frankly difficult to give the film a whole lot of thought.

Cinematical: “McG proves that he’s more than a punchline for online jokes — his action scenes are fierce and eye-popping; he gives us the post-apocalyptic Skynet world we’ve always wanted to see and then asks if we want seconds or thirds. This is the Terminator film for a generation that expects over-the-top; an audience who likes it rough, but still PG-13, so we don’t get carded at the door.”

SciFi: “If you’re an action junkie, it’s easy to like a lot of what happens in Terminator: Salvation. Director McG engineers one set piece after another with style and expertise, and generally keeps the story moving along at a brisk enough pace that you’re seldom bored or confused.” … “Not unlike Gavin Hood’s Wolverine, however, there seems to be a certain sense of obligation, rather than true inspiration, that drives this film, even if it (also like Wolverine) nevertheless manages to accomplish most of its modest goals. ”

Harry Knowels: “This feels like ALIEN RESURRECTION to me. Something that kills something wonderful for me. I’m no longer interested in Terminator. McG terminated my enthusiasm. I love the first two films. At least I’ll always have that. Fuck this movie.”

AICN : “I LOVE LOVE LOVE the action here. McG does a great job of putting you in the middle of some crazy, awesome battles against the machines.” … “The film is a lot of fun. An explosive, thrilling series of gritty action sequences that makes for a good, but not great, film.”

CinemaBlend : “Terminator Salvation is pretty good. As a summer blockbuster experience it falls squarely in the middle, never reaching any emotional or technical heights but never devolving into self-parody, either. That’s a higher compliment than it sounds, given how badly the franchise stumbled with T3: Rise of the Machines, and how few people saw any reason to revisit John Connor and his fight to save the future.” … “Terminator: Salvation is a solid and well-paced bit of entertainment”

this is getting a 34%? even T3 managed to get a 70% on RT... and that was T3!
  • tom.
How does T3 get 70% ? I usually think RT is pretty accurate, but something is wrong there.
  • The
RT is not accurate at all. The whole premise of the site is that some critics will like a film and others will dislike a film, but now that they've become a hive mind...
  • The Terminator
    Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
    Terminator 3: Lower Your Expectations

    O.o

I'm sorry, but I don't pay good money to go to a theater to have my expectations lowered. If McG was unwilling or unable to produce a better quality film than the originals, then they (studio) should have found someone who could have or the film should not have been made in the first place.
  • Well RT is not the litmus test for which all cinema is to be judged. ;) And it and it's reviews is just a product of it's time. But something really bugged me about the journal above: Lower your expectations.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
    Terminator 4: Lower Your Expectations

    O.o

I'm sorry, but I don't pay good money to go to a theater to have my expectations lowered. If McG was unwilling or unable to produce a better quality film than the originals, then they (the studio) should have found someone who could have or the film should not have been made in the first place.
  • So let me get this straight...unless they can find a director as good as James Cameron, they shouldn't make it?

    Wow...good luck.
  • Damn straight. Otherwise, what's the point?

If you can't make one as good as, or even improve on the original, then it's just a search for more money based on already established IP.

And for your information, there are plenty of directors today capable of producing films the same, if not of a better caliber than James Cameron's.

    Luck is not a factor.

Better than T3 (not that difficult), but this is not the future James Cameron warned me about.

Worth a matinee, but not much else.

I think it rocked. The call-backs weren't completely gratuitous, and Sam Worthington's character made a great addition to the Terminator universe. I'm sure one could go out of their way to nitpick it into a poor film, but for a summer movie set in the Terminator universe it hits the spot.
  • IronJ146
Sorry, that was meant to be a new comment, not a reply. My bad...

wasn't moo blood god supposed to be nude?? damn this pg-13 rating.

  • It's hard to do better than Moo Blood God.

But I'll go with Moo Goo Gai Pan.
  • Mitcell
i enjoyed it, no where as good as T1/T2 but had some really good JUMP moments throughout the film
  • imagine how good the movie would have been if you slapped an r rating on it, you would have had so much swearing because in real life here would be, and the gore would be sick, if people limbs were getting shot off and bullets going through people's heads with blood like the departed or saving private ryan. imagine a terminator movie with saving private ryan action would have made up for the bad dialogue
  • MikeMoote
Salvation was stunningly bad. The only thing enjoyable was the long children of men like take of the helicopter crash. Aside from that... this makes T3 look like a decent film.

I saw the movie also. I thought it was beyond terrible. Christian Bale truly sucked. He spoke in a monotone the entire time-Gesh, he actually appeared to be bored to me! He was so upstaged by Sam Worthington! Actually Sam had all the more dramatic scenes and lines in the movie. I guess Bale was there for ? Oh, I'm not sure why Bale was there-because he looks good in a black suit? (Batman in a Terminator flick?) Mike I also thought the crash scene was fantastic. God! The motorcycle scenes were so fake, the CGI wasn't good there. It wasn't good in alot of areas. Hey I thought this movie was going to have a plot or decent story line too? Did they jump over that or just give it 2 minutes? This movie was only appealing if you are into blowing up things, etc. However, I thought it blew in alot of other ways. I am sure Christian Bales' ego will take a huge hit by this one - an unknown Australian actor (Sam) and a teenage boy (Anton) both acted circles around him!!!!!! Where's Arnold when you need him? I definitly agree with your observations Mike!!! But I also had to add some of my own. Thanks!
  • MikeMoote
I blame McG's lack of any real direction, we all know Christian Bale can act. I was with the movie until people started speaking, the script was just painful... I felt embarrassed watching it. I dont understand how anyone could really like this movie. Someone explain it to me.
  • MarkTheseWords
the CGI i was far better than the wolverine....i think ur looking in all the wrong places

this movie is far better than rise of the machines
  • MarkTheseWords
no way man, it was FAR better than the 3rd...the 3rd is a giant turd sandwich put on 35mm film. id see this one 10,000 more times just to avoid seeing the 3rd ever again
  • Mike
I just cam back from the midnight show!!!! Awesome freaking movie!! I'm a huge fan to the original films..and they did do it justice by adding a lot of the original things as tie in..and i agree about the dialogue and the pace but overall a well done movie by MCG....deffintily will go back and see it again this weekend
  • Zeek
An utter embarrassment on nearly every conceivable level.
  • roger
    i totally agree
  • starscream9289
    The lighting made this movie.
  • Cam
    SO FKN AMATEUR
  • Justin Craig
That just proves the fact that Christian Bale should have been nicer to that poor DP.
  • I see what you did there
  • my favorite part was figuring out when he went off on him. id like to think during the kiss scene with his wife, he just looked over and went of on him
  • I really liked it...don't understand the bad reviews. Way better than T3.
  • I liked Terminator Salvation and it is indeed better then it's predecessor... That said it's not a great film and it has it's moments when you face palm yourself because of the direction it went. McG thought this movie would be his "Aliens" compared to James Cameron... It isn't. Also the movie felt as if it was a rough cut. Certain scenes would jump for example Moonblood Good and when she meets Sam Worthington the scene after that just jumps out of order also I was looking forward to the T-1 underwater popping up behind Christian Bale but that scene was cut also. I can tell that if we get the director's cut or unrated version this movie would be much more appreciated since the PG-13 rating seem to have taken a toll on the film.
  • I think you mean Good Mon Blue Boob.

Or maybe Blew Moon God Blood.

Let me be the first to say...Disappointed.

Solid Action movie, yes. This film was an opportunity for the Terminator to be refreshed, and McG did it in an ordinary fashion. Yeah, it looked cool and the action was bad-ass, but a post apocalyptic movie should be terrifying and in that sense Salvation failed.

There were so many ways to make this movie amazing, outstanding, extraordinary; It's a shame it was only good. The characters were interesting but underdeveloped. Marcus Wright was the only character who held a torch. Tin Man Cometh.

Hopefully, Terminator 5 will salvage the franchise ... oh wait, wasn't that this movie's mission?

Just got back from a midnight showing myself and i enjoyed the movie a lot, it left me with just so much more to expect out of the next movies that will come out but it is true the dialog suffered and the "special guest" in the film, let me just say that i went crazy when it happen ... i will watch the film again
  • dream
i thought this was a very good movie, i went in with high expectations and was not let down, i loved the original 2, and i loved this one, i excluded the third film on purpose lol
  • Just got back from a midnight showing, I enjoyed it a lot. Can't understand the severe mix here, but to each their own. This film should be easy to enjoy as far as summer blockbusters and the Terminator mythos go.
  • Pussy galore
I'm sorry but this movie blew....the only thing good about it was Marcus, Kyle Reese (which again i was surprised by Yelchin. I thought that he'd suck in Trek and T4 and he rocked) and Arnold's cameo...oh and the guns and roses song which was a nice tribute to T2...other than that...epic fail...McG has once again showed me that he is a less than stellar director...
  • Mmm Hmm
And what magical productions have you put on? Maybe you directed a middle school play where you put your fat ugly kid in as the lead? Who knows...but what I find funny are all the people that talk **** about directors like they know something about film. Most of you probably don't even know how to story board a scene let alone direct an A list actor and crew with a huge budget. Do us a favor...write us a script where you off yourself at the end.
  • Guy
that was Alice and Chains man...
  • Check out the movie Charlie Bartlett. A small indie film but he is very good and funny in it.
  • poor mans ferris bueller.......
  • If you consider Arnold's brief appearance as him returning as a star... then you're nuts.
  • SNAP!!!

but didnt u just cosider that???-

"especially if it reunites the same creative team and stars"
  • I was referring to T3. Not Salvation's CGI insert of Arnold's likeness.
  • Chris
I thought that was really well done even if it lasted a grand total of 4 seconds. Seriously, stop cutting back to Marcus. Nobody cares about Marcus. John Connor and the 101 are the central characters of Terminator. Keep it focused on them.
  • I just got back from my midnight screening and I have to say this is by far my favorite Terminator Movie. I really really enjoyed it there's really nothing bad I can say about it I LOVED this movie.

I don't think anything else this summer will top it for me.
  • Really? I mean, the action was cool and all, but the story literally went nowhere. The only two developments in the entire movie were that Bale's wife is preggo and Kyle Reese and John Connor are now together. That's it. Everything with Wright was just fluff, a distraction. He's gone now, leaving everything roughly where it started.
  • The movie gave me what I wanted.

Humans fighting robots so it was good enough for me.
The story was enough for me to enjoy it.

For whoever gave me a thumbs down sorry I liked the movie :/
  • I respect your opinion and all--I feel very differently, as noted in my review below--but you're entirely entitled to your viewpoint.

That said, you HAVE seen the first two movies, right? Two of the best action/sci-fi/thrillers of all time?

And Salvation is "by far" your favorite?

That's cool. I guess everyone has their own particular thing... and maybe there's someone out there who liked "Son of the Mask" much better than "The Mask..."
