500 Days of Summer Clip: IKEA Trip

500 days of summer

Fox Searchlight has released a new clip from 500 Days of Summer. This is the film I really fell in love with this year at Sundance. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom, a hapless greeting card copywriter and hopeless romantic, who is blindsided after his girlfriend Summer (Zooey Deschanel) dumps him, he shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days “together” to try to figure out where things went wrong.  This clip is from a sequence early on in their relationship as they visit an IKEA furniture store. Watch the clip after the jump.

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER Opens July 17th

"hahah asian people sure do loe to stare at shit." FUCK YOU, you racist asshole, don't u think any other person would be looking at a couple lying in bed at a furniture store???
  • I dunno man. That was such a bizarre comment kind of transcends racism.
  • I dunno man. That was such a bizarre comment it kind of transcends racism.
  • Racist? Whatever. Fact of the matter is that's how people would talk. Not everything has to be PC. Geez.

    I'm Asian, by the way.

You should see the kind of racist remarks the Chinese put into their films about Americans. But it's great if a nation can laugh at themselves. And America should really laugh...real hard at themselves.
  • wendy
He wouldn't specify the family's ethnicity if they were any other race. As if "Chinese" is an attribute that automatically equates to humorous. :(
  • I really, really want to see this movie but it looks like it wont be coming out where I live.
  • I'm not gonna lie, I'm excited for Garden State 2 - it looks great! So bummed I missed it at Sundance :(
  • Jenn
EXACTLY, why did he have to specifically call out that it was a Chinese family? What if he said "there's a BLACK family in our Bathroom" wouldn't that sound racist? Exact same thing.

I'm dissapointed, this thing had a cool teaser trailer, but as soon as I hear any dialoge all that interest went out the window. Any movie that uses people's race as a cheap joke like that does not deserve anything.
  • Jamie
Simply identifying anyone as any particular race is racist.

From henceforth, refer to other people only as "humans."

It's like "hahaha Mexicans sure do like to look at things!" or "blacks do sure love breathing them some air".

But seriously. I lived in Taiwan for two years and from experience, I can tell you they sure do love them some staring.
  • Victoria
I completely agree with Wendy!: "He wouldn't specify the family's ethnicity if they were any other race. As if "Chinese" is an attribute that automatically equates to humorous. :( "

It is easy to just laugh it off and say not everything has to be PC all the time, especially for Chinese people and other Asians. We are the race that is poked fun at the most often without people doing anything about it. But if you position it with black people or mexicans or whatever other race you will see that it's the SAME EXACT THING. Or think of it this way. The fact that they have to mention the race "hey there's a CHINESE family" instead of just saying "hey there's a strange family in our bathroom" is racist. To point out the fact that we are Chinese is just another way of exotifying Asians as if we are not equal and normal Americans just like any other white American. And not only is this a racist remark but it is exactly stuff like this that we let go by in movies that contributes to marginalizing Asian Americans in mainstream movies, media, and other entertainment. I understand how a lot of people think we just "need to laugh at ourselves" and "this is not a big deal", but it IS A BIG DEAL. If we continue to allow these stereotypes and racist remarks go on in mainstream media we are not doing justice to ourselves as Asians and the Asian American community and we are not helping to advance Asians in mainstream media or in other field or industry for that matter.
