President Obama Reviews Star Trek

obama trek

Over the last couple weeks there have been a bunch of articles comparing U.S. President Barack Obama to the Star Trek character Spock. I remember reading once that Obama was a Trekkie, and have wondered if Obama had seen Trek yet, and if so, what he thought.  Obama screened JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek reboot over the weekend, and it turns out that he liked it.

“Star Trek, we saw this weekend, which I thought was good. Everybody was saying I was Spock, so I figured I should check it out and,” Obama tells Newsweek before givng the Vulcan salute. “I used to love Star Trek. You know, Star Trek was ahead of its time. There was a whole—the special effects weren’t real good, but the storylines were always evocative, you know, there was a little commentary and a little pop philosophy for a 10-year-old to absorb.”

The photo above comes from Maureen Dowd’s New York Times article titled “Put Aside Logic”

  • If Obama is Spock...who is Kirk?

    http://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/wp-c...

He has the smile for it, but thats where the similarities end.
  • The
    Nah man... he's Bones. Definately.

What the Hell is Obama doing watching movies!?!?!?! He should be fixing the ecomony and the dust storms and shit!
  • He gets some time off on the weekends... :)
  • freemachine
Looks like none of you have ever seen Idiocracy. :S
  • idiocracy is the shit!!!!
yo peter why havent u guys put up a terminator salvation "early buzz reviews" thing up ??? (i heard its pure shite!)...but ill still watch it
  • I think the guy works hard enough to take an hour and a half break. Actually, most Presidents have special movie screenings. Often the filmmaker gets to personally take the film to the White House and present the film.
  • gah
Are you seriously naive enough to think that they get zero time off? That would drive a man mad. Im glad he gets a few hours to unwind, get his mind off of things. I dont think you can comprehend the amount of stress and pressure that job requires.
  • gah_the_retard
You, my friend, are the naive one. In fact, you are an idiot. The OP was making a joke.
  • Cool, but does this mean that Biden is Kirk?
  • Reagan was Kirk... Cool, classy.. Eisenhower was Picard
  • Thrillhouse
Biden is Riker. Think about it.
  • ide say hilary clinton is kirk
  • Suck my Spock
    Biden would be a Bones
  • So when can we expect Obama/Spock slash fiction?
  • gah
speaking of Barack fan fic, someone actually published a comic book called Barack the Barbarian. No joke. Google it. Only in America.
  • StanLee
This comment will only help the box office of the film going into weekend 3
  • Kirks better
Makes me dislike Spock, thanks a lot.
  • Zach
Politicians aren't cool enough to be compared to anybody from Star Trek. Unless the character is a prick. Just my opinion.
  • Palmer
He made a wise choice not seeing X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
  • freemachine
    LOL!
  • DHyra
Obama is still human, he can watch movies when he has some time off. But who cares about what Obama thinks of Star Trek.
  • Nobody else is gonna say it?

"You know, Star Trek was ahead of its time."

Really? Mr President, you sure are one observant bitch.
  • oats
    haha
  • starscream9289
How in the blue hell does this qualify as a movie review?
  • Guest
    it does not
Peter just likes to catch reader's attention sometimes with exaggerated post titles
  • Fat Tony
It started out as one, but his teleprompter broke.
  • was created a very interesting couple people could not believe I got something right, but the real
  • Jazz
Spock and Uhura in J. J. Abrams version of Star Trek will have their own Obama soon
  • The fact that articles like this even exist is proof of how the media plays teacher's pet. If you want an archetypal character to compare Obama too, don't forget he loves the murderous Communist revolutionary "Che Guevara," and had posters of him in his campaign rooms. I'm not projecting anything, just stating facts.

It's only been a few months and I'm already so sick of the glib, fawning treatment of this President, especially since the years of our last President were stuffed with incessant libel and slander from the same people who are bowing and kissing the ground Obama walks on.

Even an ultra-elite leftist would have to admit the ridiculous bias if they were honest for just a few seconds.
  • gastrotect
I sense much anger in you. I also sense that you don't really understand the word archetypal, but that's okay. Oh, and this is a crock:

"I'm not projecting anything, just stating facts."

You ask us to compare Obama to Che, say that he loves him (has he ever stated this or are you simply deducing) and then claim that you aren't projecting? Bullshit. Of course you're projecting. You do it almost right away. If you don't like lying, try not doing it yourself.

And for the record, these kinds of things were done with Bush too, so it's not that abnormal. There was just as much fawning over Bush, it just happened in different spots, namely radio and Fox News. The pendulum has swung the other way now.
  • Michael
    Maybe he's just that good?
  • Thrillhouse
Not yet he's not. I put a lot of hope in him, but let's be honest - he hasn't done much yet.
  • Lawdog
Spockama is awesome! I need more Spockama!
  • Ezra
You know, the guy hasn't fully staffed the Treasury yet in what he's called the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. Doesn't he have anything more important to do than ponder how Spock-like he is?
  • That Obama Spock photo is so awesome.
  • gastrotect
Because lord knows human beings can't do more than one thing at once, let alone think about more than one thing at once. Give me a break.
  • Ricky
Yea so two hours is going to save the economy. He has to take breaks, what are your asses doing to save it. The man is human and has the worst job right now, let him enjoy two hours of a great movie. How is this bias by the way? If Bush was president and said this about Trek Slashfilm would post it. If you don't like the site go somewhere else.
  • Lawdog
I personally have increased my impulse spending 20% over 2Q08. I am also pumping money into my local economy by spending as much as I can afford on the small, independent contractors who work at my local nudie bar. I don't do it for me. I do it for my country.
  • The real question is...how does he get to watch the movie? Does he go to a private screen somewhere or he just watches a DVD copy of it?
  • Thrillhouse
    I heard he torrented it.
  • HollywoodHills
Obama is like Spock. He is just standing by while the planet is being destroyed...
  • fex
“Star Trek, we saw this weekend, which I thought was good."

Seriously. Who talks like that? Yoda? Take the stick out your a$$, Mr. President(all do respect)
  • Krazy Joe
    Obama's nothing like Spock.

    Spock isn't an asshole.
  • OMGWTF!
Imagine if W. Bush would have come out and made a statement like that instead of deaing with the aftermath of 9/11...
  • Ricky
Yea because he dealt with that so well.
  • It is Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) that convinces Kirk to join the Starfleet, using Kirk’s father as emotional leverage.
  • you call Che a "murderer," while I call him a revolutionary hero. Some people love Obama, others hate him.

    Get over it.
