Sam Raimi

Sam Raimi has been doing press for his new horror film Drag Me To Hell, which means we’ve been getting some small updates on Spider-Man 4. The director says that he’s looking to prove himself after the well criticized Spider-Man 3 mistakes.

“I’ve learned a lot of lessons about what people didn’t like and missteps that I’d made,” the director tells Cinematical. “I made a lot of mistakes, and it’s part of the reason I so want to make this next story of Peter Parker. I really think I know in my heart who the character is… I would like one more chance at it [that character].” … “I really do look at them as things that I’ve learned, and hope that when I apply what I’ve learned to this next one, I really make a film that people enjoy and is really true to the character in a fresh, original way. That’s my goal.”

He tells MTV that he’s talked with Kirsten Dunst about returning for another film, and while she is willing, he can’t say for sure until he has a script in hand. As you probably already know, Pulitzer Prize-winning Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire has been working on the script, and Raimi says that he’ll have a draft in his hands in Mid-June.

Also, he’s about to hire “a production skeleton”, later telling the Los Angeles Times that Spider-Man 4 will hopefully begin shooting in February 2010, aiming for the announced May 6th 2011 release.

I used to love Spiderman 3 but then i realized how cramming Venom in to make a team of 3 villains didn`t quite workout. Sandman trying to get his daughter medical attention while Spiderman wanting to Avenge his uncle was wrong, also most of the fightscenes were very short. But on the BIG screen i wouldn`t understand why people would have hated it other than the fact that Sandman wasn`t really evil although on the DVD screen I think after a little while it would be reasonable for them to realize it wasn`t as good as it could`ve been. It`s not the number of villains that makes the movie suck though, it depends on what the villains are and what kind of comparison and/or relationship they have with eachother. But the length of time it takes to make the film still depends on the number of villains, unless those villains are a team and any of them have been used in past films so their designs were being saved for a later film when they join together. VENOM didn`t quite fit with 2 other villains, that`s why he didn`t workout in the movie.

I love Raimi but I'm personally not a fan of the Spiderman films. I really wish he would just stick to making great Horror films.

I dont really understand why people stand up for Sam Raimi. He is a craphouse director who got a lucky break from a cult flick. All the Spidermans were very average movies containing a very loved comic book character. There was absolutely nothing good about them and some quite bad stuff ... such as the villains.
  • wha?
does apricot brandy taste like peach brandy? just curious cuz i'm mixing drinks y'all!

I think he should hav saved Venom for his last movie because Venom wasn't even in it as much, also the New Goblin should hav more then 2 fights, also that mask was stupid,
  • John Guard
NO NO NO!! no venom or carnage !!!!
    use a classic villain!
learn from what you did great in # 2 and dont do what you did in #3 !!!!!!!!!!!
  • Don't mess it up.
Don't listen to the fans too, it's our faults your third film sucked.
Also... give Bruce Campbell a larger role!
  • OMG RZA!
  • Just saw Drag Me to Hell. It was awesome! Hilarious and even a little scary at parts. Also, you know he's only doing Spider Man 4 because 3 was such a piece of shit. Hopefully he redeems himself and moves on from this franchise, which will probably be rebooted in the future.

Raimi could prove himself by distancing himself from Spidey 4. That's all it would take for me to prove he still has cred. Still, I'll be the first in line for Drag Me to Hell. I grew up on the Evil Dead movies and I've been wondering why he's been caught up in this worthless franchise. Even "For Love of the Game" was more entertaining than Spidey 3.
  • How about if he takes a deeper look at Peter Parker's alter ego Spider-Man instead of another round of more Peter Parker escapades? Thats who he forgot to develop in the third film.

I honestly have had enough of Raimi's interpretation of the character. Its time to focus on the mask (Spider-Man) more. He needs to concentrate more on Spider-Man though this time around.

At least he acknowledges his mistakes on the third film and it honestly seems that he wants to improve on the character.

As long as we don't get the dancing, emo, and flat out annoying Peter Parker from the third film, I'll be happy.
  • Raimi sucks for Spider-Man. I'm looking forward to someone else breathing a new "life" into a good set of Spider-man films. Raimi always seemed like he doesn't get the character or the background. Everything from the casting to the way he's portrayed the world everything resides in.

Guess I'll have to wait a few years when they call for a "re-boot".
  • I'll step out and agree with you. The casting for those movies is wrong, wrong, wrong (except for a few of the minor characters). The second one was the only good one, and in fact, made me care about a villain I always thought was dumb. But the first was was only just passable, and the less said about the third one, the better.

Losing Dunst alone would improve the series. And just one villain this time please. Curt Conners/Lizard.

And I like the Evil Dead series for it's camp value, but DMTH looks awful. Why does Raimi get such a pass from the fan community?
  • I have no idea what you expected from a Spider-Man flick then. Part 2 nailed the character, the tone, the world, everything. I think it's the best translated comic adaptation yet.

Except for the graphic novel flicks like 300 and Sin City, of course.

hahaahhahahaha! couldn't disagree with you any more if i wanted, but yer eloquent words cracked me up cap!
  • I love that he wants another crack at it to end on a high note / produce a product that he feels is less flawed...
  • kajunnico
Not sure why anyone is expecting anything worthwhile from Sam Raimi. He has done 2 well-known trilogies and all six films were jokes. The only difference was the first 3 were SUPPOSED to be a joke. He is completely clueless when it comes to characters that he didn't write.
  • gah
its amazing how much fan cred Raimi and SInger lost for just ONE bad film. it was only a few years ago that these two guys were hailed as Gods. watch, he's gonna bring Spidey back in a big bad way.
  • Ben
Wow. I didn't even hate Spider-Man 3 as much as most people and I'm happy to see him saying he made some mistakes. There's something that makes me happy about people in hollywood being honest about their work.
  • Yeah it must be really hard with all those millions in his bank account. It's a tough life being honest after the fact.
  • Thanks :) John Doe Smith is obviously the new writer we hired after the public news writer search :)
  • you know im sure he knows what to do. I trust him. and at least he admitts to his mistakes.
  • Infrafan
Wow. He listened. *cries* I still love you Sam.
  • Do we need another spiderman? really?

When given opportunities for the greatest spiderman villain of all time, it gets RUINED. It wouldn't matter if they make a spiderman 4, the fact is they had a chance to have the greatest mash up of all time for a 4th film: Venom and Spidey v. Carnage.

Now what are they gonna do? the lizard? comeon. Garbage.
  • The redesign looked amazing, though I was wondering what John Doe Smith was contributing to the site...
  • Dvq
wtf happened to the site? that last theme was amazing, still needs work from what i saw. keep it up Peter! =D
  • Still working on it, hoping to launch this weekend
  • Put back the pretty colors! I loved it!
  • whsmith
woah, I just witnessed the site mid-redesign me thinks. looked interesting.
  • Tmart
Sheldon I thought the same thing. i thought i was on a different site!
  • What the F is going on here!!! I leave for five sec hit refresh and all I see are new pretty colors!! My heart can't take what you are doing to the site...but nice work!
  • well i feel a little better about his directorial involvement with Spider-Man 4.
its really good that he's admitting his failure with Spider-Man 3.
lets get back to Spider-Man 2 greatness or possibly...better than that??
  • Goobity
Joel Schumacher used to make the claim that he truly understood the Batman character...

Words are nice, creating good films is better.
  • Brad
Yeah, I pretty much feel like, if you don't like Spiderman 2, you are just not a Spiderman fan. That's fine, not every character is for everyone. But Rami absolutely nailed pretty much everything about Spidey in part 2. 3 on the other hand... well, we agree on 3.
  • The_Kid
at least he knows SM3 sucked ass, but DMTH looks great and I recently SP2 again and I totally forgot how great it was. I really hope he has some good ideas for SM4, and that he doesn't let the studio take control
  • brian
im happy that he is admitting to the problems with it and is willing to fix his mistakes. so im green for sm4.

we will have to see what happens
  • What is with these studios that they feel they know how to make movies and TV shows better than Directors and Writers??? They start insisting on things and it ruins the movie or show.
  • At least he admits Spiderman 3 was utter garbage. It sounds like hes getting back in stride with Drag Me to Hell and hopefully he'll clean up his mess in Spidey 4. Looking forward to Raimi back in action.
  • We will see.
  • With Spidey 3, was it a total Raimi screw up or did the studio meddle too much? I'm not a big Spidey fan, but casual is more like it. So I haven't paid much attention during the production of the movies.
  • A little bit from column A, and a little bit from column B.

They did insist on adding Venom to the film, but I don't think anyone pushed Raimi to have Peter Parker dancing all over town with an emo hairstyle. Or having Harry and MJ doing the Twist in the kitchen.
  • Troy
Well, I hope he hits it out of the park and leaves the series on a high note.

But, based on the great reviews for Drag Me to Hell, count me in on wanting Raimi to move on and do something else.
  • stop using excuses Raimi and make a good spidey flick.
  • those are not excuses; he's was being honest.
  • What excuses? He's admitting to it and says he wants to rectify that.
  • mike
He'll do great. There doesnt seem to be so much pressure from the studio this time around.
  • You know what, if Raimi can admit his mistakes on Spider-Man 3, that really just gives me so much more hope for Spider-Man 4.
  • nicely said, i agree
  • Thwip!
This is great news to hear for Spidey fans., I'm glad Raimi is acknowledging criticism and putting in a new direction here (or a return to the original direction of one and 2).
  • In Sam Raimi we trust, we all know what you have to do for the next movie, don't listen to fans and do the movie you really want to do!
