9 Movie Trailer #2

9

One of the /Film Twitter followers pointed out that 2009 will see the release of more than a couple movies with the number 9 in the title:  Rob Marshall’s musical Nine, the Peter Jackson-produced sci-fi film District 9, the Australian stop-animated $9.99, a Melissa Joan Hart thriller Nine Dead, and Shane Acker’s 9.

G4’s Attack of the Show has premiered a new trailer for 9, a computer animated film produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch), directed by former WETA Digital artist Shane Acker, and featuring the music of Danny Elfman. Based on Acker’s Academy Award-nominated 2005 film festival short (watch it on YouTube), 9 is a post-apocalyptic nightmare in which all of humanity is threatened. Watch the new trailer after the jump.

The official plot synopsis follows:

“When 9 (Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.”

The group includes 1 (Christopher Plummer), a domineering war veteran; 2 (Martin Landau), an aged inventor; 5 (John C. Reilly), a stalwart mechanic; 6 (Crispin Glover), a visionary and artist; and 7 (Jennifer Connelly), a brave warrior. I like Acker’s unique art style which could be described as a darker/post apocalyptic version of what Tim Burton use to do, with a touch of LittleBigPlanet. 9 hits theaters on 9.9.09.

    SOME.

The only part of this article that I must contest is that "9" was conceptualized well before LittleBigPlanet was even an idea. It drives me insane when people get that confused. In fact, I read that the LBP crew used the short film "9" as an inspiration for the Sackboy.

This film looks amazing. Great cast, fantastic character designs, unique story, what's not to like?
  • Infrafan
Focus Features delivers for me, and I'm really looking forward to this film. The short was so fantastic. But why the LittleBigPlanet comparison? No one has ragdolls trademarked, and the short predates that game.
  • brokenenglish
    looks interesting moehahahahah
  • WHY isn't this film in 3D? Every other animated film is but this one isn't? Heck! Coraline was even 3D!!
  • Josh
im loving the coheed and cambria in the 9 trailers. props to whoever came up with that brilliant idea. Welcome Home is a good song =P
  • Truth. It's really fitting too since the Co&Ca story is the saga of not quite human characters as well.
  • Yes it is. I just hope it doesn't start to get over-used as trailer music after this movie (like Clint Mansell's brilliant stuff).
  • Hell yes. Can never hear enough Coheed. =D The film looks great, too.
  • This trailer was great. Sorry but the LittleBigPlanet comparisons are naturally going to occur. I mean both of them have inanimate rag dolls gaining life. This comparison isn't necessarily a negative aspect as LBP is a damn good game and are only similar aesthetically.

Anyways I'm really looking forward to this.

  • I am so pumped for this!
  • PnkRck911
Looks awesome! And what a great use of Coheed & Cambria's "Welcome Home"; it fits the mood perfectly and gives the whole affair such an 'epic' feel!
  • Can't wait! Finally, something fresh is on its way.
  • Cooooooooooool!!!! I've been waiting for this since the short film was nominated at the Oscars! :D It looks very eerie and dark. Can't wait to see it this september.
  • nice........real nice in fact
  • 9 looks fascinating! Should be a refreshing take on the all-to-familiar post-apocalyptic man vs. machine/tech conflict.
  • I feel like I've seen this trailer a long time ago. Am I only one?

No matter. It looks great. Kind of like, a "guys" Coraline. If ya know what I'm driving at.
  • dagreenman18
    FUCK YEAH LITTLEBIG FALLOUT!!
  • 9 looks fantastical! Is it September already!?!
  • This trailer did nothing for me. I absolutely loved the first trailer but this one felt like a rehash of what we've seen before with a dramatically less effective use of music.
  • CoffeeandTV
Holy crap, I'm too excited for this. I absolutely love the short film and I cannot wait to see how it translates into a full-length movie on the big screen.
  • This looks amazing. A nice change of pace from the usual CG animated stuff that hits this place.
  • awesometacular
  • Goobity
Looking forward to this one, for sure.
  • When I first saw the trailer to this movie, I was blow away. I like the dark tone of the film and can't wait to see it on 9-9-09.
  • malars
It really has a Tool music video feel to it, so one of their songs would have probably fit better, but I'm loving what I've seen so far and am really looking forward to its theatrical release!
  • yes, odd pace but awesome looking characteristics of the movie.
  • This..looks...epic
  • The D Man
    Because 3D sucks?
  • Because I want to watch a movie and not a gimmick?
  • It's a gimmick when purposely used like Monsters Vs Aliens or Journey to the Center of the Earth but what I'm saying is that this looks like a film that just doesn't use 3D as a gimmick but as a tool to actually bring the audience more in with the movie
  • I liked the first trailer better, great pacing, but regardless this is probably the movie I'm looking for to the most this year.
  • bobdisgea
my most looked foward to movie of the year along with the road.
  • Tykittaa
Coraline was the first stop-motion film to be filmed in 3D rather than converted to 3D in post.
  • Weyland_Yutani
I personally feel that, for it's style and approach, it looks wholly original. I'm anticipating this greatly for a variety of reasons and hope that it gets a proper reception.

It would be sweet to have more films like this made. There are a lot of fantastic stories that would be well served by the medium.
  • Trailer not as well-paced as the first, but still really really awesome.

    Love the C&C as well.
  • freemachine
    Beautiful, but painfully dull.
  • freemachine
Did anyone else hear the sex sounds near the beginning of the trailer? At first I thought it was my neighbors going at it again, lol!
  • billy joe bob
Welcome Home better be on the soundtrack. Coheed & Cambria are amazing.
  • If you guys are excited about this, there's prequel story to "9" that has already begun to unfold on facebook. Just go to Facebook and search "9 Scientist"

Go inside the mind of the Scientist to see the Machine that will help rebuild the Nation and be the first to see his designs that will change the world.

Begin your journey into the back-story of 9 now.
