Whiplash Concept Art From Iron Man 2?

rourke_and_whiplash

I’m posting this because I sincerely believe what we have here is bona fide. Latino Review have today received via e-mail an image that they were told is concept art from Iron Man 2. I’ve posted a bit of it up above, alongside the picture of Mickey Rourke who will be playing the character in the movie, and you can also get a look at the full thing below the break.

I’m still quite confused as to whether or not Rourke’s character is to be called Whiplash. Some sources tell me he’s playing Blacklash, while others comment on how he’s a Russian character and that makes it likely he’s The Crymson Dynamo. Indeed, he’s certainly dressed in red armor in this concept illustration. I’m hoping that he’s not called any of these things, in fact, and has an actual name like an actual person.

Note the similarities and differences between the common or garden Iron Man suit (Mark 3, was it?) and the get-up that Rourke’s character is shown wearing here. Seems like a plausible design, and the style of the illustration is definitely consistent with many designer’s approach to concept art. And I’d guess that a faker would have tried to replicate the Rourke fizzog more accurately.

I’m supposing that the proton pack looking thing is there to power his electric whips. Come to think of it, a faker would probably have had the whips front and centre stage too.

Iron Man 2 is less than a year away now, which doesn’t seem too long at all. Should fly by. Don’t you miss the good old days when you had almost no lead up time to films being released and they almost seemed to come out of nowhere? Much better than, say, reading a script online one year, hearing that it gets financing the next, casting the one after, shoots that fall, is in post the following spring, gets a trailer some six months after that and then hits screens anywhere up to a year past that point.

I'm really not sure that is legit it looks like a photo of angelheart era rourke, the head just doesn't seem to be part of the body. it just doesn't look like an artist did it. I'm trying to find the photo of a younger rourke it corresponds to but come a blank so far.

I predict this is going to turn out to be another freelance concept artist trying to get noticed by passing his work off as an "official" leak. Watch for the artist to come forward in a few days, claim the art was "stolen from his website and posted without his knowledge" followed by him asking if anyone wants to hire him.
  • I wish I could find Brendon's cynical jokes funny..

And was that the best image of Rourke? There are tons of good ones. Put one up of Marv, it looks better than that.

MARVEL movies need to start doing crossovers ( i.e. Avengers, VS Hulk, etc.) or else they are going to get bland as hell. That's why crossovers happen so often in the comics because how many times can you watch a guy in a metal suit beat up another guy in a metal suit? Or, more importantly, how many different versions of that fight can you write? What will be the fatal flaw in Rourke's suit that allows Downey to beat him?
  • Uh Brendon, just so you know, Whiplash/Blacklash does have an ACTUAL name it's Mark Scarlotti. Crimson Dynamo ALSO has a name it's Anton Vanko, he's the first of many CDs from Russia so it could be any of the others as well. The Joker didn't have a name in Dark Knight no one had a problem with that right?
  • This looks like bad Fan Art.. Seriously, did someone post this on DeviantArt? I don't buy it.

    @ Brendon

Do you think you could have found a worse photo of Mickey? Sure, his face is deadly enough to destroy the Mark III single-handed, but is that any reason to rub it in? Rourke used to be a great looking guy, but too many jabs in the ring turned his face into cottage cheese. No point in celebrating this though, right? Pick a better picture next time.

Why am I getting negitive grades on this? Do you honestly think it's not true?
  • Looks like Mickey's in agreement with the concept art
  • or brendon, my bad.
  • yeah its just art, lol. people get so hype over nothing.

oh, btw peter - follow up comments via email shows up sometimes and sometimes it doesn't.
  • Brad
"and you can also get a look at the full thing below the break."

    No, you can't.
  • It was there! I swear. I don't know where it has gone. Perhaps Latino Review requested Peter remove it...? Or perhaps something IT-problem happened. Will look into this right now.

Are there no more email replies? What happened?

    he's bona fide.
    he's a suitor.

i cant hear that phrase without thinking of o' brother where art thou?
  • jason B
so part 2 is gonna have two guys fighting in 'ironman suits'...just like part one did...hrrm. stark's rogue gallery reminds me why he's always been a B or C list superhero.

love downey but i think i'm in the minority of people not impressed with this franchise.
  • John Guard
why not just focus on C-Dynamo??

learn from Spider-man 3 , Batman and Robin, X-Men 3....TOO MANY VILLAINS MAY NOT BE A GOOD IDEA !!!
  • Looks interesting. I hope he has some sort of helmet to go along with the rest of that suit.

Is this post about Brandon Connelly or Iron Man 2? I can never tell with this guy. I guess I think that I may jusy be as crazy as I think I am. I don't know. When it comes to ME, I think its really wild when I get things wrong like this I do. I have alot of opinions and I think you all care alot about the opinions of ME. I gotta go now. I have things to do. I. ME!
  • fakeBrendonConnely
I see that you've gotten some down votes, and one of them is mine. Clearly you don't sufficiently respect my level of genius. I have amazing opinions and insight that are unmatched because I went to film school and I now work as an editor of some kind, so I am able to hypothesize in this fashion. Also, I have a tremendous amount of knowledge in MY head and a layered knowledge of understanding of film / film theory... or maybe I really just regurgitate things I head my professors say. Either way I know much better than actual filmmakers how a movie should be done. Did I mention I went to film school?
  • Corey J
Goddamn it, I hate you so f'ing much, Connely!
  • gah
I dont see why you guys have to be dicks.
  • ryan
Connelly talks about himself and his opinions way to much in his articles. It makes him come off like an egomaniac. Tell us what's going on. If you want to say something, leave that shit in the comments section.
  • wha?
i'd much rather hear hear brendon's opinions than you whiny yahoos. seriously who comes to a blog and complains about someone expressing their opinion. it's...a...blog.
  • freemachine
Connelly is pretentious, this is true, but I'll give him credit for being tenacious as well---he posts despite all of the negative criticism and that takes cohones. At least Brendon knows to keep it short, unlike Hunter whose articles are, in length, rival those of Milton, Virgil, and Homer combined.
  • gah
I dunno, it seems like in an opinion peice, one should be able to express one's own opinion. but thats just my opinion.
  • freemachine
Speaking of things. Do you know if they ever got a new staff writer?
  • I like the suit but will he be wearing a mask? Because one shot of Iron Man Ray will kill him. I hope he is Crymson Dynamo, because Whiplash is such a weak choice.
  • Zinc
This isn't related to this rather interesting article, but did you see T4's Rotten Tomatoes score? It's at 17% right now!
  • Holy f--- you're right! 5 rotten and only 1 fresh!?!
  • 14% now.
  • gah
    What?!!!!
  • HarveyDing
    Looks cool.
But, seriously, I'm still in Gooby-shock.
