chuck-cast

It looks like Chuck fans can rest easy. NBC has announced tonight that it will be renewing the show for a third season, though it will receive a shortened 13-episode season along with other possible budget reductions. Ausiello reports that the show may lose a cast member, and possibly two staff writers as well. Given that the series has many secondary characters, I’m thinking we could easily lose someone without affecting the core of the show at all. The writer cut also makes sense given the shortened season run.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles fans unfortunately have less to celebrate. While I can’t find any other sources corroborating this, Ausiello has updated the show’s status on his fall tv cheat sheet to “officially cancelled.” Given that he already reported that the show was pretty much down for the count last month, the show’s fate is not all that surprising. As a person who appreciated the series, I’m saddened to see the show go.

I think the decision may have come down to saving Dollhouse or Terminator, and despite how much I dig the Sarah Connor Chronicles, I won’t give up Dollhouse’s 13 episode renewal for anything.

While we’ve lost some good television shows this season, I’m heartened to see the likes of Chuck, Dollhouse, and Friday Night Lights survive. It gives me the (possibly naive) hope that good television shows may actually get recognized for their quality—instead of constantly being threatened by ratings numbers.

Discuss: Are you happy about the Chuck renewal? Do you think Sarah Connor Chronicles deserved another chance? Was Dollhouse the better choice for Fox?

  • Glad they got rid of TSCC. Wish they had canned Heroes which is a mess.
  • Yeah. I too dislike it when there are good shows to watch on TV.
  • chuck is one of the top shows on tv right now, i'm really just happy nbc didn't give up on it totally. not super happy with only 13 eps, but better than none.

the terminator series sucked from day 1, it didn't even try to stick to anything that happened in the movies and the john conner was a whiny little bitch - it deserved to be cancelled.
  • Dude by the end he kicked ass and really kicked the kid losers to the curb. That played him in T2.
  • Chuck-Fan
The order is for an initial 13 episodes, with the option for "the back 9" -- as it's called -- which would bring the total to 22.

Whether it gets 22 is solely based on the ratings.
  • terminator fan
Let me get this straight....Chuck is not a whiney little bitch? Get the fuck over it. Chuck sucks dick. At least terminator had a good story line. A nerd gets government secrets planted in his head. Get over it. LAME
  • Jack
How was Connor a whiney bitch? He was a hell of alot better than Terminator 3 and Nick Stahl.
  • The Dollhouse renewal was amazing. I actually dropped my phone when my friend phoned me about it. It's an excellent show that hopefully will find its larger audience in the second season
  • Last I checked excellent isn't a synonym for average.
  • I'm glad that Chuck is coming back.!! Not real happy that they are only giving it 13 episodes, same deal they gave Dollhouse.

Unlike other people I actually did like watching TSCC.. I'm a big geek. So maybe that's the reason Why I liked it.
  • Long live Chuck but dam TSCC got canned. Come on si fi channel pick it up i think it would do better but at least it had a great ending.
  • Dollhouse + Chuck renewed = im happy

Dollhouse at first was slow and boring but caught on fast.. but that is joss.. most of his shows are like that.
  • Chuck = yes!

As for Friday Night Lights: what a fucking show. Great TV, don't know why it's so ratings challenged. Acting, writing, story (for the most part) are superb.

Then again the ratings are stupidly flawed, so oh well.

I loved TSCC! How can they leave it at that ending??? I NEED to see some resoloution there! the series sagged a bit, but come on! It was just getting really, really good!
  • Justin
Reaper? Not getting picked up?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Ahem, this of course referring to the cheat sheet that says "it's a goner".
  • Brad
I am actually happy about a 13 episode season for Chuck. The beginning and end of season 2 were awesome, but in the middle of the season there was a bunch of filler. Maybe this way the show can become more focused and really reach it's potential story-wise. I am kinda concerned about the budget cuts though.
  • I like TSCC was actually interested to see where they would take the next season, but the plot was a bit rough in places, so no real surprise.
  • They didn't cancel it because of the story.

the terminator tv show didnt work because one lead part should have been casted better. especially john connor he seemed prissy and weak you could tell the actor in real life maybe gay. its nothing wrong with that, but his interaction with the women on the show seemed to be unrealistic. The show should have made either John the lead or sarah the lead it flip floped which made it hard to get into.
  • Watch the second season and tell me he's prissy and weak.
  • I like the Terminator thing and I'm sad to that it goes to an end. Otherwise I'm Joss Wheedon fan and I'm glad that dollhouse goes further...
  • Palmer
I'd rather have one more season of Terminator than Dollhouse, I'm a fan of Whedon, but damn it they left us on a big cliffhanger!
  • Jeffrey
Wow, so a show created by a guy who's been working the same formula for over 15 years gets renewed, and a SPECTACULAR revamp of a formerly formulaic film series, which has NEVER failed to create surprising, relevant social commentary in a world overrun by technology; THAT show gets the axe? Dollhouse is trite. It is so trite. Whedon has been working the same exact formula since the Buffy movie, and he's not even giving us any new faces to fall in love with. Dushku's hot, yes. But you know what's hotter? A show that makes you THINK. The superhero-waif character has been Whedon's calling card since day one, and I'm sorry, but the amnesia angle is the most overplayed, unrealistic plot device in Hollywood history. Shame on you, Fox! Once again, you never fail to disappoint. On the eve of the release of the new Terminator film, it makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER TO CANCEL A SHOW THAT WOULD BE GUARANTEED TO BENEFIT FROM THE BACKDRAFT OF A MILLION-DOLLAR GROSSING FILM. I like Whedon, and I like his previous work. But if Fox had to cancel one of these shows or the other, then they've made a very poor choice. And so have the viewers who don't have any patience for thought-provoking dramas that defy expectations. If all you want out of your television is a show where a skinny chick plays dress-up while pouting her lips and doing some high kicks and not wearing a bra, go rent some old episodes of Charlie's Angels. And grow up. And stop blindly bashing a program just because you don't understand it. It's called SUBTLETY, and it's not TSCC's fault that it went over your heads. Boo, Fox. Boo.
  • I like you. *ehug*
  • TSCC went over our heads? The first year it was good not great and the second season was even worse. People started abandoing it not because it was too hard to understand but because it was dull.
  • BAZ
Heh, kind of ironic. Watched the Terminator: Salvation trailers and thought to myself, "T1: Awesome, T2: Amazing, T3: Meh, TSCC: I'll act like it never existed."
  • I didn't like TSCC until seven or so episodes into the first season. Before that it was to episodic. So perhaps others were initially turned off as well and that's why it didn't get as popular as it should have. But anyone who stuck with the show, knows that it had an epic season one finale and continued to be amazing there on out.
  • I was turned off by the godawful acting.
  • hard target, awesome
CHUCK! - Greatest show on television at the moment, season one was great but season two reached a whole new level. I never thought a show could be so entertaining.
  • jason B
    @ devindra

friday night lights get a season 4?!?!? can you confirm this, or is this wishful thinking?! holy shit this is great news if its true!
  • It was announced in March (see my link above) that the show has been renewed for *two* new seasons :)
  • Justin Craig
I appreciated the Terminator show for what it was, but when I look back objectively I can see that it wasn't a very good show and I can see why it got cancelled. The plot lines were way too asinine for avid fans of the series, and too convoluted for newcomers. It screwed with the Terminator mythology in every way possible and introduced characters that really shouldn't exist (John's everlasting Terminator protector and Derek Reese to name a few). Furthermore, with all of the Terminators and resistance fighters being sent back in time, it makes me wonder how the 1st and 2nd Terminator films (the only ones that matter thus far) can even hold up logically. If the resistance has never-ending access to the time machine then why wouldn't John send more than one guy back to protect his mom? And with the knowledge that his father will die at the hands of the Terminator, why wouldn't he send back someone to take care of his dad? As if the Terminator fans needed more logic problems. Ugh. I'm just going to pretend as if the show never existed and I suggest that everyone else do the same.
  • I agree it may not make the most sense given what we know from the movies, but as a sort of alternate universe Terminator story I thought it did pretty well.
  • YES!!!! Death to Glaufags!!!!
  • Wow, another FOX show cancelled for Family Guy to make fun of.
  • agree lol
  • Heil Chuck!
  • Tazer
The crappy Dollhouse show only got renewed not because it was any good but because the production company slashed the budget so they are footing most of the bill not Fox.

TSCC was always the better show but it is expensive to make what with the shows premise so its unlikely you can cut the budget to the bone and still have a show. I would have much preferred more of TSCC or at least 2-3 episodes more to finish of the cliffhanger in season 2.

Its all about Chuck, Casey and Sarah... oh and we can't forget Morgan! What a great show
  • could it be that they cancelled Sarah Connor in order to allow the Terminator movie franchise to flourish? Either way, I don't watch this show, Chuck, Dollhouse or any other shows mentioned here. It's no loss for me.
  • It's most likely that due to the fact they are losing the rights to the franchise, it'd cost more to produce the show. I don't see how the franchise can flourish if they canned the show.
  • Travis McGee
I'm so happy Chuck got renewed. Although it sucked that it is only for 13 episodes. Can't wait to see where they take the show next year.
  • Nika
Dollhouse sucks next to T:TSCC. I wish they would can that instead.
  • Andrew
    Hooray for Chuck!

SCC cancellation makes me weep, though... but at least Fox stuck with Dollhouse.
  • I can't believe they renewed Dollhouse. I officially take back one tenth of the shit I have said about Fox.
  • DSol
How stupid can Fox be? Don't they realize that if Salvation is a money maker (which it's going to be) they can capitalize the show on the movie's success? What kind of geniuses do they have running Fox?!
  • Anti-Septic
Friday Night Lights, I just never understood the idea of this show? As having kids who play High School football and going to games and being involved from day to day, why would I also want to watch it on tv? I know the acting is very good, just lost on me. I would rather watch something that is fresh and allows me to escape, a good laugh can never be looked down upon!

As with most people here I was happy Chuck was given another shortened season, show makes me laugh, but I miss the "hot weiner girl" writing! lol
  • Perhaps you should actually give it a chance? :P Given that many (myself included) consider it among the best television dramas ever made, there's probably *something* worthwhile about it ;)
  • Glad Chuck is back, but the 13 episode thing sucks.

Couldn't care less about SCC, I lost interest in season 1 when they travelled to the future and yet John Connor, a teenager from the mid-90s understood and knew everything about computers in 2007, it made no sense, like a lot of stuff on that show.
  • Mike
Although not the ideal conditions for a Chuck renewal, I'll take what I can get! Now I just wish Reaper would get picked up :(
