The Road Movie Trailer

The Road

Dimension Films has finally released a movie trailer for John Hillcoat’s feature film adaption of Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road. Earlier this week Esquire Magazine published a review of the film, calling it “The Most Important Film of The Year.”

The film tells the story of a man (Viggo Mortensen) and his young son (Kodi Smit McPhee.) traveling through a desperate, post-apocalyptic world. The flap jacket on the book describes the setting as “burned America.”The film co-stars Robert Duvall and Charlize Theron, and Guy Pearce.

As expected, the trailer is really playing up the post-apocalyptic imagery and more genre/thriller elements. Watch the trailer after the jump and tell me what you think in the comments below.

“Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.”

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Yahoo. The Road will hit theaters on October 16th, 2009.

boo. bad trailer. where's the heart, the soul, the fear, the sadness? why did they sell this as a thriller and not as a big important oscar worthy movie? bad call dimension.
  • Oh man, I feel like we watched an entirely different trailer.
  • Wow...opinions are just everywhere on this. Let's start a poll to get a count:[polldaddy 1621345 http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/1621345/ polldaddy]
  • Agreed. Being a fan of the book, the tone of this trailer was all wrong. "An Epic Journey is about to begin" What a joke. It wasn't an epic journey, it was a simple story of survival. This makes it look like some thriller, along the lines of Knowing. That is a good question: Where is the heart, soul, fear and sadness that the book conveyed? I hope it's just the trailer and not the movie, but who knows with Hollywood these days.
  • I felt that it got the whole sadness thing till exactly 1:40 into it. Then it sucked hard.
  • SOS
Jesus, what a bad trailer. I was expecting suspense and to be gripped but instead it felt like a direct-to-DVD trailer. I hope to god they don't fuck this film up.
  • whsmith
I've got to agree with you, really poorly constructed trailer.
  • Stryker
    (tears)....at long last...
  • When i first heard this was going to be made into a movie i thought to myself oh god.. they are going to ruin it like i am legend, then more information began to drop on actors, director etc. and i gained a little more faith.. now i watch this beautiful trailer and this movie cannot come out fast enough!
  • musicsoup
don't get me wrong, i'm dying to see this movie. don't think i want the movie to suck. i'm very much capable of keeping the film and the trailer separate. but this is not the right trailer to release for "the most important film of the year"
  • MonkeyMafia
Completely agree with RamJelly, there was an enourmous conveyence of dread and exhaustion in that trailer
  • poundbeyuncabbw
Looked good half way through , true to the book, then turned into a micheal bay film. So I think there might be a probelm. big fucking problem
  • scotty
what are you talking about? Its called a trailer thats what trailers do. You cant judge the movie on a trailer.
  • elessar
There's no need to fret. The film, from nearly every screening review I've read, is extremely faithful to the book.

Like it or not, they have to promote the film for a general audience, and that includes people who have not read the book.
  • omar swarez
Michael Bay? doesn't look like that at all. That's the best you could come up with?
  • Bull
I agree with you about the trailer. This movie should not be marketed as a thriller, because it isn't (if it stays faithful to the book, which I heard it does). Dumb people should stay away from this movie.
  • Chris
That review posted on /Film a few pages back said that the film wasn't actually anything like what the trailers made it out to be, so let's hope that holds true.

The main thing for me that I'm really excited about was the acting. Viggo sold me at the last moment with that weak, hopeless declaration "We will survive this". He sounded so beat down and so lost that my heart skipped a beat. That one line at the end of this trailer gives me hope for this movie. I, personally, can't wait.
  • Fred
    Wilhelm scream, haha.
  • mcgruff
haha I was about to post the same exact thing. loved the trailer...but that scream made me laugh.
  • musicsoup
good. someone else noticed that also.
  • grin-worthy
  • oats
    YERAAAAAAAAAAA!
  • Morestuff
That wasn't the Wilhelm scream. That was the YOUARGH scream.

  • If you're referring to the scream at 2:02, that isn't the Wilhelm scream. That is the scream from the pc classic Dark Forces. Used just as much if not more than these days than the Wilhelm scream.

  • Luckily it's only for trailer purposes.
  • ...where?
  • Brad
Nice try, but that isn't actually the Wilhelm scream.
  • Lynchpin
Not the Wilhelm. Just an ugly overused stock scream sound effect.
  • edc2
    ahh! real monsters scream.
  • thats the one.
  • Mr. X
Oh god, stuck out like a sore thumb. When will people learn to STOP using this sound in professional stuff.
  • The Wilhelm scream used in the trailer was a tad bit comical.

The movie itself according to Esquire is great so I'll just consider the trailer not to be a fair representative of the entire film.
  • Yeah I heard that too. Ha ha.
  • Dvq
looks good but, why does it always have to be some nutjob group? post apocalyptic/apocalyptic stories shouldnt be so personal or the audience ends up wondering how Tom Cruise survives a lot of crap and stops worrying about the world. (war of the worlds)
  • kc kelley
who said it was a nutjob group...read the book...it never says who/why/what happened, just that something bad happened...tom cruise doesn't deserve to lick the souls of viggos worn out boots...
  • Jawek
Looks like this will be well worth the wait
  • Looks good to me
  • Oh man this is almost as misleading as Sweeney Todd from a couple of years ago! And the trailer is just plain bad with the Wilhelm Scream going off near the end--COME ON! I was really excited for this, but now it just looks disappointing as if they have changed the movie from the original source material too much. It would have been better, even, if they had just skipped incorporating the mother (Charlize Theron) character. That's just me though...
  • I don't understand why people are getting upset with the trailer i think its a great first trailer.
  • it's very misleading because the book is a sad sad and lonely post apoc drama, not an action flick.
  • That's a good thing. Most trailers today give away too much of the actual story.
  • The trailer to me doesn't say hey look this is a balls to the wall michael bay lets blow up everything action film.. trailers need to appeal to masses they can't just slap together a super depressing trailer revealing key moments in the film that isn't how it works besides this is the first trailer im sure more will come but as a huge fan of the book i don't see how anyone can be disappointed with this trailer.. i think the trailer was wonderfully made that catches the eyes of drama fans, "action" fans and fans of post apocalyptic films it does what it needs to do, do you want it to reveal everything like lets say quarantine did? they showed the ending in the trailer.. now there is a BAD trailer.
  • badeboom
Isn't a clip of this intro in the new Dawn Of The Dead opening? That one with the police men on the street?
  • That sure does look like it.
  • I hear what you're saying but business wise I think it's a smart move. The "classy" trailer will come later.
  • musicsoup
i hope you're right, man. i want this movie to blow people's minds and not look like I Am Legend 2. this trailer very much caters to the people who know nothing about the book.
  • True, but I like the little nuggets they slipped in like the Coke scene. It'll be OK. I have a pretty good feeling that the people drawn in by that trailer and not the book will be the ones walking out thinking, \"What the fuck just happened?\" while those of us who read the book will be doing cartwheels.
  • loretta johnson
    i'm getting in line now
  • I haven't read The Road (but it's on my list!), but I have an idea of what it is like. And I must say, I had really been looking forward to the film, but this trailer REALLY turned me off.
  • Simon
I'm a little disappointed they don't have Michael Ironside playing the leader.
